Editor's Notes
notes to graphic artist: this is a storyboard draft with speakers notes to give the flow. There are currently no graphics, and the formatting of slides is often not consistent (e.g. client references) There is bulleted content provided on many slides, however we prefer to minimize the number of slides that are pure “headline + 5 bullets”. This should be a graphically intense preso that will appeal to a C level audience and look professional to a business audience level that is accustomed to seeing presentations from groups like Marketing Agencies, Investment Bankers, etc. (versus just IT vendors). Our goal is that after hearing this presentation customers will: “be inspired and energized to believe that our solutions will give them disruptive ways of reforming their business and growing top/bottom line. Customers must be convinced that buying our solutions will enable their business to outpace their competitors more than alternative vendor solutions” Primary Audiences: Customer CXOs, Line of Business Leaders, Line of Business IT Leaders
There’s also a strong server-side integration story, as Lotus Connections components play well in Web portals (as well as other Web applications). In many applications, IBM clients can actually take the portal offline, using the same portlets and code as the central Portal deployment. There’s really nowhere in the SOA stack where Lotus Connections cannot play well or integrate easily.
This is a diagram of the value of a Portal over existing web pages. The boxes on the right represent the different applications and content that exist in a company. They are color coded to show that they are coming from one department or business unit. In the middle, the portal will asseble the different pieces (pages, portlets, rights, etc.) based on Role, security, personalization. Thus creating a integrated user experience for the end user. A portlet: Is an application that is hosted by the portal. Provides output to the user by generating markup output that is assembled into a portal page by the portal. Manages the user's preferences for the associated application Provides and maintains security for the portal and the user using the associated application Similar portlets may be grouped into a portlet application
WWCM 6.1 starts by adding a new user friendly “Welcome Page” entry point for content authors, editors and managers. This new design provides a simplified authoring environment with access to templates, search, libraries, personalization, task bar and help information.

Real-time business connects users. What does a business have more than users? Forms. And more Forms. Don’t you just love forms? Behind every paper form is a business process. The reality is, paper based forms are one of the most prevalent business process instruments used today. In keeping with our approach of helping you work the way you want to work, last year, IBM made a strategic move and acquired the leader in XML-based electronic forms, Pure Edge Solutions. Coincidentally, they co-authored the W3C Xforms specification. Because PureEdge was built on Eclipse and J2EE standards, we have already completed the integration of the technology into our portfolio. This let’s us help you, automate forms based processes. There are many exciting elements to IBM Workplace Forms, many of which you see here! IBM is investing heavily in the eForms market space Acquisition of PureEdge Creation of IBM Lab dedicated to eForms product development New product releases - Workplace Forms 2.6 Creation of a Forms Developer Community Workplace Forms is open and interoperable Fits with customers’ heterogeneous environment leveraging XForms, XML and SOA standards Workplace Forms 2.6 will include an Eclipse-based Workplace Forms design environment Will release free XForms Design Tool via alphaWorks Part of IBM’s overall composite application programming model Expanding availability and integration options Will be available worldwide in 22 languages and expanding into mid-market integration with Workplace Services Express Integration kits for WebSphere Portal and IBM Content Manager
Enable customers to easily integrate Google Gadgets into portal pages From an end user perspective, Google Gadgets integrated in WebSphere Portal will behave just like local portlets, being viewable and customizable like any local portlet Administrators can pre-define Gadget Portlets for the portlet palette Generic Gadget Portlet is per-configured by the admin to connect it to a certain gadget, e.g. an admin could create a “Map Portlet” by creating a Gadget Portlet and connecting it to the Google Maps Gadget Users can select such pre-configured Gadget Portlets and drag them onto their pages like any local portlet If allowed by admin, users can drag Generic Gadget Portlets on their pages and select Gadgets to display themselves from the Google Gadget Catalog Generic Gadget Portlet initially lets user select Gadget to display from the Gadget Catalog The Generic Gadget Portlet then displays the selected Gadget User can view and customize the selected gadget like any local portlet
Advanced Personalization extends on the traditional strength of personalization by allowing personalization rules to apply to both portlets and applications. This allows for a more dynamic user experience, wherein the business logic within a personalization rule could, for example, display a particular enrollment application on an HR benefits page during open enrollment. Personalization rules can now also be edited in context with the related applications and pages. All of which provides for added business value, allowing business users to map the current needs of the business to the portal.
Accelerators are integrated packages that easily snap onto WebSphere portal and improve the time to value for those specific business challenges that customers have been communicating. Our base portal server includes composite application and mash up framework capabilities, as well as enhanced Web 2.0 support, that allow you to build your SOA based solutions within our overall strategy.
Support for Multiple LDAP Bindings extends on the flexibility promise of virtual portals, allowing for more robust support of different customer environments.
Config data: things like class files and property files. Things that are rightfully managed by WAS ND Release data: portal pages and the portlet instances on those pages, including default edit mode data Customization data: portlet data (user data), nothing that is shared Community data: WCM, PDM, application instances, etc. Shared data that isn’t part of the release data. Remove tight linkages between things in different buckets So don’t keep track of installed portlets in the portal DB to the extent that it gets in the way of WAS ND Configuration Data that defines system properties of the portal server such as DB connection, object factories, deployment descriptors, etc. This type of data typically is constant over the uptime of a server node. In WP 5.1 configuration data is typically kept in property files on the hard disk. Customization (User Data) Data that is associated with a particular user only and that cannot be shared across users or user groups. Typical examples are PortetData or Implicitly Derived Pages. Community Resources All resources that are neither configuration nor customization and that are typically modified during production (such as shared documents or application resource). Typically administrators are allowed to modify or delete shared resources. Community Resources are protected by PAC. Release Data All resources that are neither configuration nor customization and that are typically not modified during production (such as administrator defined pages, portlets, portlet instances, templates, etc). Typically administrators create release data on an integration server and stage it to the production system. Release data are protected by PAC. The “release data” only contains data, not code .
[don’t want these to just be a bulleted list. Want a cool graphic way to present them and link the benefits with the capabilities.] In the recent years’ rush to provide .com sites for every constituency, many companies are now struggling managing and updating all those different web properties in a cost effective way. Additionally, as companies go thru mergers and acquisitions, each iteration is bringing about web consolidation or rebranding that requires significant IT and business costs. As a result, our customers today are focused on deploying a single platform that can still provide a differentiated web presence. Also, more and more customers are moving toward providing low cost online self service as a way to reduce out of control call center costs. Our IBM Portal and collabration solution allows you to deploy a leading edge web presence that can also integrate with your backend transactional applications to provide real customer self service with huge IT site development costs. Additionally, more of our customers are focused on providing real time online collaboration with their customers via instant messaging and voice over IP chat. IBM can provide these rich collaboration tools in an integrated, secure solution for customer online self service.
[don’t want these to just be a bulleted list. Want a cool graphic way to present them and link the benefits with the capabilities.] Improving IT responsiveness to changing business needs requires a flexible, reusable IT infrastructure that is designed to be enterprise scalable, secure, and open. Many competitors claim to have these characteristics, but on further inspection they are often revealed to actually be departmental, vulnerable, and proprietary. Reusable technology services are key to achieving IT responsiveness and agility. IBM portal offers reusable user interface, look & feel, personalization, security integration and administration services. These common services free up IT to focus on building the truly innovative services the business needs rather than continually re-inventing the basics. Additionally, Portal offers a catalog of 1000s of pre-built services such as integration with ERP, Business Intelligence, or Financial applications. Many of our most successful customers also build their own internal portlet catalogs of their own custom portlets that can be easily reused across the enterprise to speed development. Finally, Portal has been called the ‘face of your Services Oriented Architecture’. In reality, IBM portal solutions can provide that ‘face’ to existing services, but also much more given the built in business-user facing functionality for things like process workflow, dashboards, alerting, and electronic forms. These business capabilities combined with your existing backend SOA services lead to a true end to end SOA solution which can provide business-user facing benefits and ROI in addition to streamlining backend IT.
