The document discusses logo design and provides examples of well-known logos such as McDonald's and Starbucks. It analyzes design elements that make these logos recognizable such as simple shapes, use of specific colors, and placement of text. The document then shows draft designs created by the author for their own media production company logo, incorporating elements like a clapper icon and their dog's paw print. Feedback on the final logo design praised the color scheme, border, inclusion of the clapper, and dog paw, while suggesting minor text or shading improvements.

2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.
2. Existing Logs- McDonalds
A logo is a symbol or a smaller design adapted by a business to
identify its products that they create. Most of the most popular
logos have little to no text and are very simple designs.
Companies to do that to not overwhelm their audience with too
much information. Specific colours are also used to draw the
audience in, for example McDonald's are famous for their
yellow and red logo. When looking into colour theory red
represents excitement, bold and passion. With red being a bold
colour the audiences attention is immediately. The popular
yellow colour represents happiness, cheerful, fun and
hopefulness. By McDonalds using these colours it automatically
allows their audience to associate the colours with their brand.
The shape of their logo also matches their brand as many
people have associated the ‘M’ with their fries. The serif font of
the brand show that they are also a relaxed brand and allows
them to associate with other fast food brands as they don’t
serve fancy food that would be served in a restaurant. By using
white text it allows the audiences attention to go to the writing
immediately which allows the name of the brand to be the first
thing that they see. However, more professional restaurants
would use more neutral shades such as black or grey for their
business.

3. Existing Logos-Starbucks
When thinking of popular logos one that came to mind was ‘Starbucks’ as
it is one of the most recognisable logos world wide. For a coffee company
their logo differs from the rest, for example Costa has an image of a
coffee bean which shows that they are a coffee business. However, their
logo includes a mermaid in the middle which has nothing to do with their
coffee business, the only indication that the brand is a coffee business is
the words ‘Starbucks Coffee’ on the outside of their logo. In the logo the
brand had included 3 stars which then links to the ‘star’ in Starbucks. One
thing that they are also known for is their circle design, and they carefully
planned where to place their company which allows the audiences eyes
to travel around the logo. By putting the name in white it stands out and
draws the audiences attention and by having the mermaid in white it
allows the audiences eyes to go from the top of the logo to the bottom so
they gain a sense of what the brand is about.
The sans serf font, allows the logo to seem more professional than other
fast food/ coffee businesses. By using a dark green, white and black
colour scheme it represents that the company is on the higher side when
it comes to price. Dark green represents money, materialism and peace.
Which shows that their products may be more appealing to weather
people. This shows how their brand may stick out from most fast food
places as it is more of a luxury brand which differs from brands such as
Costa, Muffin Break or Pret.

4. Draft 1
20XX presentation title 4
Before creating my logo, I looked into famous logos and how they
draw their audiences in. As I looked into different ideas my final
idea changed overall, when thinking about my logo i always wanted
to base it around my dog Poppy. However with this logo it doesn’t
give my audience the idea of what my company is about.
What I like about this logo is the colour scheme which can be seen
in my final logo. What I like about this logo is the colour scheme as
I like the gold and black contrast with the dog logo in the middle. I
also like how the company name is in the middle of the logo. I took
inspiration from the Starbucks logo in terms of it being in a circle as
all the main points are in the centre of the logo.
When creating this logo I also wanted to keep it simplistic to not
overwhelm my audience with to much all at once. Also by adding
brightly coloured key elements of the logo it grabs my audiences
attention. The key thing that I wanted to change was to add an icon
that related to media in a way to allows my audience to see what
my company is about.
5. Draft 2

Poppy
Productions
This is my final design for my logo, after taking a look at my sketch and
first draft of logo I decided to incorporate both the media icon and
dedicate it to my dog. From my other design I also took the circle from
the previous design to allow the main icon to be seen. I also
incorporated the dog element around the circle, by adding the clapper in
the middle my audience can now see what my company is about.
Once I had created this design I sent a form to my peers to see what
they like and dislike about my logo.
6. Feedback
20XX presentation title 6
I gained feedback for my logos off peers in my class
answering two questions on a google forms document. The
questions asked were:
What do you like about my logo?
The responses I received from this were
• Colour scheme
• Border
• Clapper
• Dog Paw
I am happy with these responses as these are the key
elements that I focused on when creating my logo.
What would you improve about my logo?
• Text on logo
• Box around clapper
• Nothing
• Have colours the same shade
When looking back on my logo I can see a light grey box
around the clapper, I can also see the shade difference
between the circle and the clapper however I think that it
draws more attention to the clapper in the middle.
