2. In this poster the director has thought about how they
will use the codes and conventions to really grab their
audiences attention. Outer banks is a action- adventure
teen drama on Netflix that was realised 20th April 2020,
in 2020 the show accumulated 1.1 million views and
overall has been watched over 2.1 billion minutes as of
September 2021. The show follows the lives of 5
teenagers, 4 of which are called the ‘pouges’ who live in
the deprived area of the island, and the other teenager
is referred to as a ‘kook’ who is from the more
privileged side of the island also known as ‘ figure 8’.
The director, Jonas Pate, thought through the group
names to have meaning behind them and allows the
audience to spot a clear difference between the two
groups. The pouges was named after the throw away
fish, which on their island they are dismissed by the
other residents and they are ignored , however the
kooks are the rich residents of the island who everyone
looks up to and worships. The word kook can mean ‘
mad or crazy person which foreshadows what their
characters will be like in the future of the show.
In this poster the producer has used a Dutch tilt to
foreshadow the events that are to come within the
show, by doing this, this allows the audience to become
curious of the events that are going to occur in the
future. Another element of the poster that will catch the
audiences eye is the colour scheme of the poster. As
your eyes follow the poster to the bottom we can see
that the colours go from very warm tone to show
greens, oranges, yellows, which may allow the
audience to think that this show will be peaceful,
friendly or show optimism for the episodes ahead, the
colours then change to very cold colours so a lot of blue
is shown towards the bottom which may imply trust but
also sadness. Jonas Pate has also added scenes from
the actual show into the poster to allow the audience to
gain a greater feel of a few of the key scenes in the
In my project I am creating both print media and a documentary
however I will be using my print media as advertisement for my
documentary. So when researching existing products I have decided
to research both movie posters and the documentary themselves.
A key component of print media is text, the font and placement of the
text is very important as it will capture the audiences eye differently
and can change the perspective of the poster. The producers have
placed the main text straight down the middle of the poster to allow
the audience to see that first and then focus on the main scenes
around them. The white that has been used for the text can allow the
audience to think of purity of innocence for the show, the text is also
clear which still allows for the main images in the background to
show. With the images in the poster the first image is specifically
important, in the first image we see the 5 main characters which
allows the audience to start to gain a greater understanding of the
show and familiarise themselves with the characters that they will be
following for the rest of the show. The characters are also using a
direct mode of address to the audience by looking directly at the
camera with both happy and a serious expression on their faces
which will allow the audience to gain abetter feeling of the
atmosphere that is going to be portrayed in the show.
Again in the first image the audience are made to look up at the
characters and a low camera angle was used to portray the
characters as powerful and may also create a sense of intimidation
towards the characters.

4. Sunderland Til I Die was released on 14th December 2018
which followed the 2017-18 season of Sunderland AFC
which saw the club playing the EFL championship after
they had been relegated from the premier league the
season prior. The second series then followed the 2018-19
season of the club, it also followed the clubs first season
under the ownership of Steward Donald.
Sunderland Til I Die was produced by ‘Fulwell 73’ which is a
film, music and television company based in London. The
name of the company is homeage to Sunderland AFC,
Fulwell end is the name of the stand at Roker Park and the
‘73’ comes from the last time that Sunderland won a major
trophy. This series can relate to this brief as it is based
around Sunderland and their football team. As the brief is
around ‘ Sunderland Culture’ I thought that it would be
appropriate to research into this product as it can relate to
the brief the most.
When creating this poster we can see that the back of the
crowd has been faded into black which has allowed the
sans serif font of the series title to really stand out against
the black background. The use of the black background
also allows the main players in the foreground to stand out
more, this will also allow the audience to focus on the
players reaction. The use of the colour red I usually
associated with excitement and allows the audience to feel
excited for whats to come in the series. The white that is
shown in the text suggests cleanliness and honesty which
may imply that this documentary is going to show the reality
of what it is like to be apart of a football club throughout all
the highs and lows. By the use of multiple colours shows
diversity within the program and will attract the audience
more.
I believe that the series shows the life of Sunderland and
the people that live within the community. It also shows how
football and the club brings the people across Sunderland
together to support the players throughout every game.
With the release of Sunderland til I die as well
as positive reviews there was also a lot of
negative reviews. A review from Phil Smith
who expressed his disappointment at the lack
of anything revelatory or explosive in the
series. He also said that he considered the
setup of Sunderland as an area of post-
industrial poverty a little forced in the first few
opening episodes.
In this poster a medium shot has been used
which allow the audience to feel like they are
neither looking down or up to the players on
the poster, which may make the audience feel
more comfortable when looking at the poster
as they do not feel intimidated by a low angle
shot where the players may seem over
powering. However, the audience are also not
forced to look down on the players where they
may see the players as weak.
As well as the use of red for the text to remind
the audience of the recognisable Sunderland
colours, a texture has been added to the text
that may have referenced the post industrial
time in Sunderland, which allows the show to
reach a wider audience or remind the older
generation of the past in Sunderland.

In this documentary Dr Bob Johnson looks into
the minds of Queens front man. He analyses past
experiences that may have changed Freddie
Mercury lifestyle. He also goes into depth about
how childhood trauma could have effected them
and how they presented themselves on stage, the
psychiatrist also explains how being in the public
eye with many scandals could have had a major
effect on the singer and how it may have led to his
death, Freddie died of an AIDS related illness.
Farrokh Bulsara or Freddie Mercury was born in
1946 in Zanzibar, he then attended an English
style boarding schools from the age of eight and
returned back to Zanzibar after secondar school.
After studying and writing music for years, Queen
was then formed in 1970. The band consisted of
drummer Rodger Taylor, guitarists Brian May,
bass player John Deacon and front man Freddie
Mercury. In this documentary Dr Bob Johnson
shows the audience Freddie's past and how that
effected the on stage persona that his fans loved.
In the documentary it includes old footage of
Freddie which allows the audience to feel like
they are seeing authentic footage of him rather
than footage dramatized for the purpose of the
documentary. By including images and videos
from Freddie's childhood, this allows viewers to
see an insight on where Freddie grew up and
show the journey of how he became the famous
singer he still is today.

In this poster, one of the key things that has been
used to grab the audiences attention is the text.
The text has been placed in the top centre of the
poster to immediately draw the audiences
attention to the artists name and the title of the
documentary. Within the title the main title of the
documentary has been highlighted in neon yellow
text, this may have been done as the
documentary series has different episodes
relating to specific artists like Michael Jackson
and Elton John. Behind the text the background
has also been darkened to allow the white text to
stand out from the background.
To allow the image of the artist to stand out a
neon yellow strip has been added that surrounds
the artist. This allows the audiences attention to
be drawn to the image that has been placed in
the middle of the poster.
When looking at the image the audience is forced
to look slightly up towards the artist which allows
the artist to seem powerful by angling the camera
from a lower angle. By making Freddie Mercury
seem powerful it shows the power that he had
and still has over the music industry and
everyone that listened to the bands music.
As said previously, the dark background has
been used to make the white text pop out
however, that black background has faded from a
lighter background that looks light it has stage
lights within the background, which implies to the
audience about his showman personality and
how much he loved to perform on stage.

How does this relate to my documentary?
When looking into existing products I had to take into consideration my idea that I
had for my documentary which is ‘Music In the North East’. So when taking this
into consideration I was looking for music and north east related content, luckly I
was able to find two related documentaries which were ‘Sunderland Til I Die’ and
‘Freddie Mercury Inside His Mind’. Sunderland Til I Die was released on 14th

effected the on stage persona that his fans loved. In the documentary it includes
old footage of Freddie which allows the audience to feel like they are seeing
authentic footage of him rather than footage dramatized for the purpose of the
documentary. When looking into the print media of each documentary poster I will
take into consideration different elements that I think would make my documentary
more successful by including key codes and conventions that will attract my target
audience to my product. I mainly focused of Sunderland Til I Die when looking into
existing products as it is close to home and is the key element of the brief as it has
to be themed around the North East. This will relate to my documentary as I will
include elements of music and how it has impacted the North East.
