• WE HEAR THE AMPLITUDE INCREASING AND DECREASING AS A FUNCTION OFTIME WHEN TWO WAVES
HAVE SLIGHTLY DIFFERENT FREQUENCIES.
• WHEN TWO WAVES ARE NOT CLOSE IN FREQUENCY, WE PERCEIVE THEM AS TWO SEPARATE TONES
• WE CALCULATE THE RESULTING WAVE OF THE BEATING EFFECT WITH THISEXPRESSION:
Y ( X , T ) = Y M SIN ( K 1 X - Ω 1 T ) + Y M SIN ( K 2 X + Ω 2 T ) = 2 Y M COS [ ( K 1 - K 2 ) 2 X - ( Ω 1 -
Ω 2 ) 2 T ] SIN [ ( K 1 + K 2 ) 2 X - ( Ω 1 + Ω 2 ) 2 T ]
AND WE CAN GET: F BEAT=(F1- F2) △Ω=(Ω1+Ω2)/2

• A 103 HZ TONE AND A 120 HZ TONE ARE PLAYED SIMULTANEOUSLY, WHATIS THE BEAT FREQUENCY?
• EVEN THOUGH WE KNOW THAT △Ω=(Ω1+Ω2)/2 IS THE DIFFERENCE FREQUENCY, THE EFFECT OF THE
EXAMPLE IS TO MODULATE THE AMPLITUDE. THE AMPLITUDE WILL BE LARGE FOR BOTH POSITIVE AND
NEGATIVE CRESTS AND THE AMPLITUDE MODULATIONS HAVE THE SAME FREQUENCY AS THE DIFFERENCE
BETWEEN THE FREQUENCIES. THEREFORE, F= 103 HZ+ 120 HZ= 223 HZ
