Phytoremediation of heavy metals with creosote plants
US 5927005 A, J. Gardea-Torresdey, K. Tiemann, L. Polette (Niewold), R. Chianelli,
N. Pingitore, W. Mackay, Issued July 1999
ABSTRACT
Methods are described for the decontamination of soil containing heavy metals. In particular, these
methods rely on phytoremediation using the plants of the species Larrea tridentata, the creosote bush.
The methods are particularly directed at the decontamination of soil containing lead, copper, nickel and
cadmium. The methods described herein are the first examples of phytoremediation using perennial
plants which concentrate a high proportion of the scavenged metals in nonessential tissues, allowing the
plants to be used continuously, rather than requiring repeated cycles of planting and harvesting entire
plants in order to fully decontaminate the same area of land.
Comprises organic pigment/dye complexed to the surface of a layered or fibrous
inorganic clay; paints
US 7052541 B2, L. Niewold, R.R. Chianelli, Issued May 2006
ABSTRACT
The present invention includes a paint or coating composition comprising an organic pigment or dye
complexed to the surface of a layered or fibrous inorganic clay. A wide variety of paint colors can be
obtained by varying the pH during the preparation as well as by varying the synthesis conditions and
changing particle size of the clay. The paint has unprecedented stability.
Paints or coatings comprising organic pigments or dyes complexed to the
surfaces of a layered or fibrous inorganic clays

2. Environmentally-friendly near infrared reflecting hybrid pigments
US 8123850 B2, L. Niewold, Issued February 2013
ABSTRACT
A hybrid pigment composition is provided including a pigment or a dye and a fibrous clay. The pigment
composition has higher reflectance in a near infrared region than a visible light region of the
electromagnetic spectrum. The fibrous clay can be selected from palygorskite, sepiolite, and mixtures
thereof. The hybrid pigment composition is tunable to provide high reflectance at a desired wavelength in
the near infrared region.
Hybrid pigment compositions comprising clay and natural dyes
WO 2009092104 A1, L. Niewold, R. Torres, G. Williams, Issued September 2012
ABSTRACT
A hybrid pigment composition is provided comprising a fibrous clay or charged bentonite and a natural
dye selected from carmine, beta carotene, carmine hydrosoluble, turmeric, beet, and annato. The fibrous
clay is a palygorskite, sepiolite, or a combination thereof. The natural dye is present in the composition in
a range of 0.01 wt.% to about 75 wt.% based on the total weight of the hybrid pigment composition. The
composition optionally includes water and a biodegradable polymer.
Organic-inorganic hybrid pigment compositions
US 8409343 B2, L. Niewold, R. Torres, G. Williams, Issued April 2013
ABSTRACT
An organic-inorganic hybrid pigment composition is provided comprising an organic pigment, an inorganic
pigment, and a fibrous clay. The fibrous clay can be selected from palygorskite, sepiolite, or a
combination thereof. The inorganic pigment is selected from rutile pigments, spinel pigments, bismuth
vanadate pigments, cerium sulfide pigments, and combinations thereof. The organic pigment is selected
from anthraquinone pigments, anthrathrone pigments, anthrapyrimidine pigments, azo pigments,
azomethine pigments, quinacridone pigments, quinophthalone pigments, diketopyrrolopyrrol pigments,
inanthrone pigments, isoindoline pigments, metal complex pigments, perinone pigments, perylene
pigments, phthalocyanine pigments, pyranthrone pigments, pyrazolo-quinazolone pigments, thioindigo
pigments, and combinations thereof.
High strength polymer compositions containing hybrid organic/inorganic
pigments
US 20110200772 A1, L. Niewold, A. Ramirez, G. Williams, Filed August 2011
ABSTRACT
A plastic extrusion or molding composition includes a polymer and a fibrous clay and/or a hybrid
organic/inorganic pigment. The hybrid organic/inorganic pigment comprises a fibrous clay and an organic
dye or organic pigment, and combinations thereof. Plastic extrusions and moldings are formed from the
composition. In addition, a method of making a plastic component from the polymer and fibrous clay or
hybrid organic/inorganic pigment is provided.
