The livestock sector is an important part of Sudan's economy, contributing hard currency from exports and supporting local and state budgets. It also provides organic fertilizer and transportation services. Most animals are raised nomadically in the savannah, with herders moving between wet and dry season campsites. Livestock represent an activity, means of subsistence, savings, prestige, and social status for nomads. However, overstocking of rangelands due to environmental and population pressures is causing degradation, requiring nomads to change their traditional habits.
