Listening and acting: how can Corporate Parents raise aspirations?

  1. Introductions Format of workshop – presentation on SDS as CP and how we developed plan Research carried out and how it influenced delivery What we did/will do differently as a result of research Then hand over to Jenny & Sari who will take you through an activity we use in school, and they will also talk about their role as school advisers Opportunity to ask any questions/raise any points at end
  2. Became CP in 2014 – legislation extended to range of public bodies Guidance from SG was to consult with young people – would have done it anyway Also consulted with colleagues & partners, lot of knowledge already in organisation Range of commitments – will highlight some of these during workshop Published October 2016 – landing page on SDS website
  3. Consultation with young people – 2015 2 x focus groups and 12 individual interviews Asked about What they knew about SDS? How had they used our services? What they thought of our services? What they understood by corporate parenting? What they wanted from SDS as a corporate parent? Used this to develop 7 key actions HAND OUT DIAGRAM Give a few minutes to read through – any thoughts? What would you have expected? Is there anything else you think SDS could do to be a good corporate parent?
  4. Purpose of research – influence content of the plan – commitments First 3 bullet points – Jenny & Sari will pick these up in next part of workshop Extension of post school offer – guidance for CPs is to extend all services up to 26 but feedback from YP reinforced importance of this – wanted services for longer, to be able to come back to SDS if plans didn’t work out Be there for me to come back to Leaflet – refer to & give out: Short & informative Show me the service is endorsed by other care experienced young people
  5. Why raise aspirations? Young people with care experience under represented in all positive destinations- biggest gap is in HE Over represented in certain degrees/courses – social care etc Understandable to an extent but important to ensure you have covered all your options, think of all you can do/be, have to make an informed decision Developed resources for advisers – Connect site – positive role models; training for staff – WCS videos, school adviser sessions Most importantly – young people asked us to do it; can sometimes feel pre destined; may not get support that other YP get at home; “I wanted encouragement, a bit of support”
  6. Publish new plan summer 2018 – in process of developing it now Carrying out further research – focus groups with young people; feedback from senior phase survey Building on previous research – diagram given to groups – are they aware of the changes? Are these still important? Consultation with partners & colleagues – what will new commitments be? Have gained experience as a CP but we will continue to listen and act – voice of young people central to our CP work
