VIT - A place to learn ; A chance to grow
VIT UNIVERSITY

VIT University, profoundly known as VIT, was founded by Shri. Dr. G. Viswanathan a former parliamentarian and
currently the chancellor, with the sole aim of providing quality education on par withuniversities abroad at an
affordable cost to the local population.

Mr. Sekar Viswanathan and Mr. G. V. Selvam are serving the institute as Pro-Chancellors. Dr. D. P. Kothari, the
Vice Chancellor is spearheading the activities in VIT University. VIT comprises of 6 schools offering 18 undergraduate
programmes and 28 post graduate programmes. It also offers research programmes leading to M.S., M.Phil., and
Ph.D. Degrees. Of the 12,000 students studying in the institute, nearly one third of them are women. 1,000
fulltime faculty members work at VIT. The international linkages established by the institute help the students
get global education and training.

SCHOOL OF COMPUTING SCIENCE AND ENGINEERING

The mission of the School is to persistently strive for achieving excellence in computing disciplines. It is being
pursued through its spectrum of academic programmes in computing of contemporary standards. The sustained
effort is to produce computing graduates with potential to design and develop systems involving the integration
of software and hardware devices; innovative approaches to programming and problem solving as well as creative
ways to use Computers; Large scale software systems; and computing infrastructure of an organization.
History of computing discipline at VIT University dates back to 1993, when the Department of Computer
Science & Engineering was established to meet the demand for well-qualified computer professionals. The School
of Computing Science and Engineering (SCSE) was conceived in the year 2009.
At present, the School headed by Prof. M. Khalid has more than 2000 students and 100 core faculty members
apart from many visiting professors, distinguished professionals from industry, eminent researchers and teaching/
research assistants. With an aim to carve a niche for itself in Computer Science and allied domains, the School
strives to:

      • Become a, pioneering world-class centre of excellence in education and research through collaborative,
            consultative and participatory approaches

      • Nurture effective capabilities for the development of high quality technical and scientific manpower
to meet the challenges of the knowledge era

      • Provide cost-effective Information and Communication Technology (ICT)-based solutions and value-
added services to a variety of organisations and to meet the expectations of stakeholders

      • Foster a learning and creative community that strives to continuously advance the frontiers of
knowledge and promote the deployment and usage of ICT-based applications for betterment of society.
The Workshop

This workshop is intended to bridge the gap between the industry and academia. The courses provide the concepts
of the process-internals-based knowledge required to support the Linux system. It throws a light on how the
internals of the operating system hangs together and particularly on process management aspects of fundamental
abstraction offered by Linux. The course provides valuable insight into Linux to people about the critical design
issues of Process management in Linux 2.6. This course discusses, in detail, the process management, its address
space, scheduling, synchronization and mode-switch.

COVERAGE

The programme will cover the following topics:
Introduction to process management in Linux
            Process Address Space
            Process Scheduling
            Kernel synchronization
PEDAGOGY

The pedagogy for the programme will be a mix of lectures and demonstrations of the tools.
