8. Just a Thought As you search through your target companies and locate opportunities that you feel are a good fit for you, use your LinkedIn connections to help youget a foot in the door. If the person is a direct contact, make a call and find out the best way to have them help you. If the contact is a secondary connection, ask for an introduction from your direct contact and once done, reach out. A good way is to send an email.
9. How to… Using the right approach in your email can make a difference, especially when you do not know the person you are asking something of very well. Using a vague email that requires them to do a search or look up additional information will probably not get positive results you are looking for. For example: “Hi Joe, I'm interested in the Director of Channel Sales position at XYZ and I think I'm a great candidate. I’ve attached my resume and I'd be grateful for your help in reaching whomever in your company is doing the hiring."
10. Best way… “Hi Joe and thank you so much for your help. I’m so glad that we had the opportunity to connect. I know I can contribute to XYZ company in the role of Director of Channel Sales . If you could help me get in contact with John Smith, who is the hiring manager for this position, I'd really appreciate it. The Job ID# is HMN123, and it's the Director position in Tampa, FL. I applied for it online through your corporate website on June 1st, 2010, but just in case, I am re-attaching my resume."
11. Make it work Being detailed and providing information shows the person that is helping you that you are serious and committed. This will in turn filter to the hiring manager. The more specific you are the better. You will show your organization skills, consideration of your helper and present yourself as a competent candidate. Now all your contact will need to do is type in the name of the hiring manger, Outlook should pick up their name from the Corporate Directory. By providing great detail, you're actually making it easier for them to help.
