couture /ˈ kʊˈtj collections for the fall-winter 2013 season. Buyers
of the pricey frocks represent a who’s who of global wealth /welθ/:
European socialites, Hollywood celebrities, Arab princesses. Spotted in
the front row: Kim and Kanye at Valentino; Sofia Coppola and Diane
Kruger at Chanel; Sophia Loren at Armani Prive’; Monaco’s Princess
Charlene and Sharon Stone at Dior.
The glitz was on fully display during Donatella Versace’s show on
Sunday (left), where models strutted in sparkling mini dresses and
diaphanous /daɪˈæf .ən.əs/ cocktail gowns. The occasion marked
Versace’s return to the Hotel Ritz in Paris, where her brother, Gianni, had
staged his last runaway show shortly before his murder in 1997.
Elsewhere, the fashion elite swooned over Raf Simons’s debut
/ˈdeɪ.bju/ couture collection for Dior. The house hired the former Jil
Sander designer this spring after a yearlong search for John Gailliano’s
replacement.
