This document defines and describes basic geometric shapes and terms such as points, lines, line segments, angles, triangles, quadrilaterals, circles, cylinders, spheres, cones, and polygons. It was written by Megan Henry Sykes for a school assignment and includes pictures taken at local parks to illustrate the different shapes.

2. POINT Definition: Names a location and has no size. Represented by a dot

3. PLANE Definition: Flat surface that has no thickness and extends forever. . . . A B R C

4. LINE SEGMENT Definition: Part of a line consisting of two points and all the points between them. A B

5. ANGLE Definition: A figure formed by two rays or sides with a common endpoint called a vertex

6. PERPENDICULAR LINES Definition: Two lines meet (cross) and create a 90 degree angle.

7. PARALLEL LINES Definition: Lines that lie in the same plane and are the same distance apart over their entire length.

8. TRIANGLE Definition: A closed figure with three sides.

9. RIGHT TRIANGLE Definition: A closed figure with three sides. One angle equals the measure of 90 degrees .

10. PENTAGON Definition: A figure with five sides.

11. HEXAGON Definition: A figure with six sides.

12. SQUARE Definition: A four sided regular polygon with four equal sides and angles. Angles add up to 90 degrees.

13. RECTANGLE Definition: A four sided figure where all interior angles are 90 degrees.

14. TRAPEZOID Definition: A quadrilateral figure which has at least one pair of parallel sides.

15. PARALLELOGRAM Definition: A quadrilateral with both pairs of opposite sides are parallel or equal to each other.

16. CIRCLE Definition: A line forming a closed loop every point on which is a fixed distance from the center point.

17. CYLINDER Definition: The surface generated by a straight line intersecting and moving along a closed plane curve while remaining parallel to a fixed straight line that is not on or parallel to the plane of the directrix.

18. SPHERE Definition: A three-dimensional surface, all points of which are equidistant from a fixed point.

19. CONE Definition: The surface generated by a straight line, the generator, passing through a fixed point, the vertex, and moving along a fixed curve, the directrix.

20. OCTOGON Definition: sides are all the same length and whose internal angles are all the same size.

21. EQUALATERAL TRIANGLE Definition: An equilateral triangle is one in which all three sides are congruent.
