Sequoyah Middle School was built in Federal Way, Washington to serve the growing middle school population. The 70,000 square foot school has flexible learning spaces that can accommodate changing programming needs. It features a hydronic heating system with boilers and air handlers in each classroom wing. Mechanical and electrical systems were installed to support the full facilities, including a kitchen, science classrooms, gym, and commons area. The building cost $2.1 million for mechanical systems and $1.3 million for electrical systems.
Grand Mound Elementary School in Rochester, Washington underwent a complete modernization to upgrade its mechanical and electrical systems while keeping the school operational. The project replaced the split system heat pumps with a new four pipe fan coil unit system heated and chilled by four central boilers and an air cooled chiller. It also included new overhead domestic water lines, mechanical loft spaces, energy efficient lighting and security systems, and a renovated boiler room and water service area. The modernization was completed in February 2004 on budget and on schedule.
The project involved constructing a new two-story office building and hearing labs to replace an aging facility. It also included two levels of underground parking and six stories of condominium units above. The central mechanical system used gas boilers and a rooftop chiller to provide heating and cooling to air handlers and VAV boxes throughout the building. Special attention was paid to acoustics to ensure proper operation as a hearing center, including sound attenuators, reduced velocity ductwork, and low noise air terminals.
