1. Light bulb Idea for Short Film _1
Overview:
The general idea for this piece is that a man finds a light bulb that enables him to think of brilliant
ideas instantly when it is on his person. However I planned to show the progression of his
encounters with this magical possession from the first encounter too his abuse of the magic of this
object to finally his punishment for abusing its abilities (a moral ending). I planned to however use a
non linear narrative structure so that the piece doesn’t become predictable. I wished to start the
piece with the light bulb smashing (the man’s punishment for his abuse) and then from her show the
piece in the linear order and have the start and the middle follow this end section.
Cinematography:
The use of cinematography in this piece will be vital to create the sense of magical ability of the light
bulb. To create this magical effect I will use many close ups on the face of the man whom possess
the light bulb throughout the piece to show his change of emotions from having no ideas at all to
possessing this light bulb which gives him infinite knowledge. I will also use many close ups of the
light bulb at the appropriate time so that the audience know when the light bulbs powers are in
effect. At these moments I may have the filament of the bulb flicker brightly to let the audience feel
its power.
Sound:
Sound will be key in this piece to create drama. At the beginning of the short film when the light bulb
smashes I will have this sound loud and overbearing tie signify the importance of the light bulb
smashing to the audience. Later on in the piece sound will also play a key part through the dialogue
(DIAGETIC) when the man’s adventures with the bulb are shown when he is struggling to conjure
ideas up in his head and his stuttered speech reflects this and then all of a sudden he has a wealth of
ideas thanks to the bulb (Most likely in a work review setting).
Editing:
For this piece I will have face paced cuts between the man and the bulb at moments of true high
intensity. I will use a long take during the section of the piece where the man is struggling to conjure
up ideas because this will allow the audience to see his true panic and fear which will then make the
later revelation of the light bulb abilities even more exciting for the audience.
Mis en Scene:
Throughout this piece a basic office location will be used and this will be consistent throughout the
piece, the reasoning behind this is that I do not wish to take any of the emphasis away from the
importance of the light bulb and its powers. I will also keep all actors costume consistent and will
have little change in lighting throughout the piece in order to keep the focus on the bulb.
