Life is just the way you see it. A 101 seconds visual poem of my invaluable personal 6 months exchange program experience in Birmingham, England, United Kingdom. The aim of the short film is to inspire other people to see and feel the subtle details in everyday life and its culture. Being all there wherever you are is the key, because I believe it’s not where you are but how you feel at that moment that matters the most. One can’t control the initial reactions for what one thinks and feels, but if one can stop oneself sooner and prevent outward reactions and actions by practicing putting oneself on pause at that split second, one can always choose how to feel in that very moment.

A 95 seconds visual poem of my personal 6

ence in Birmingham, England, United Kingdom.
The aim of the short film is to inspire other
people to see and feel the subtle details in
everyday life and its culture. Being all there

3. The visual is intended to invite people to
always see the good in one’s life, be
grateful, and also to cultivate the art of
serendipity. Each typography is designed
as a literal explanation of the footage while
also adding the amusing vibes to the
scene.
They are simply the list of general things
that captivated me while I am studying in
the UK.
I also intentionally choose balance middle
shot to keep the simplicity and tidiness of
the shot.

Picture Style of my Sony Alpha 7ii Setting
is clear and in auto white balance.
Most of the footages are taken during the golden
hour so it creates a more dramatic sky colour
shades.

16. S T Y L E & M E A N I N G S
The overall style of the film is influenced by the
honest everyday life of my exchange student
experience. A look of 28mm film combined with
aspects of documentary photography (architec-
ture, human interest, foods, and interior design).
It starts with faces focusing with their gorgeous
eyes with colours, the meaning of this footage is
diversity and no matter where you are from,
how you think, it’s all about our own perspec-
tives.
Continued with short clips I took around
Birmingham City I visit the most and daily buses
from Perry Barr - City Centre
By the time the music dropped, a short clip of the
art gallery building (art is what inspires me the
most). A picture of our classmates inside my
favourite room in Birmingham City University,
the printing room, and pictures of letterpress
tools, museum, hall, and a fast forward footage
with the caption ‘explore & travel’ followed with
Tower Bridge, Cathedrals, and other things we
tend to find in United Kingdom, this footage is
intended to inspire people to have courage, go
out, stay curious, and find yourself.
Followed with the smiling faces of my exchange
student mates from many other departments and
universities, showing how beautiful while
expressing my gratefulness having the chance to
meet and know them, to enjoy many together.
The “Are you alright?” typography appears whil-
stthe adorable background instrumental playing,
explaining the phrases people tend to use to greet
one another in England.
The entering the postcard into the post box scene
means I still remember my family and friends in
Indonesia and Taiwan, and then I share how I
feel inside, it will bring happiness to them and
satisfaction for me. Pillar boxes are an iconic
symbol of Britain, recognised and loved around
the world. Then a glimpse of strawberries on a
plate appears, this is because of the juicy sweet
taste me and my parents love, it’s rare to find that
kind of strawberries in our country.
The film ends with a hands clapping footage, and
what afterwards are like a brief behind the scenes
and credits thanking everyone who has helped
me throughout my exchange program journey.
And I close the film with shots of exchange
students from many places all over the world
waving their hands.
