Non-Volatile DIMMs, or NVDIMMs, have emerged as a go-to technology for boosting performance for next generation storage platforms. The standardization efforts around NVDIMMs have paved the way to simple, plug-n-play adoption. This session will highlight the state of NVDIMMs today and give a glimpse into the future – what customers, storage developers, and the industry would like to see to fully unlock the potential of NVDIMMs.
Hitachi Virtual Storage Platform is the only 3D scaling storage platform designed for all data types. How Persistent Memory Will Bring an Entirely New Structure to Large Data Comp...inside-BigData.com
In this deck from the Persistent Memory Summit 2017, Steve Pawlowski from Micron presents:
The Revolution of Memory and Storage Side Processing - How Persistent Memory Will Bring an Entirely New Structure to Large Data Computing.
"As data proliferation continues to explode, computing architectures are struggling to get the right data to the processor efficiently, both in terms of time and power. But what if the best solution to the problem is not faster data movement, but new architectures that can essentially move the processing instructions into the data? Persistent memory arrays present just such an opportunity. Like any significant change, however, there are challenges and obstacles that must be overcome. Industry veteran Steve Pawlowski will outline a vision for the future of computing and why persistent memory systems have the potential to be more revolutionary than perhaps anyone imagines."

Need For Speed- Using Flash Storage to optimise performance and reduce costs-...NetAppUK
Flash Storage technologies are opening up a wealth of new opportunities for improving the optimisation of applications, data and storage, as well as reducing costs. In this session, Peter Mason, NetApp Consulting Systems Engineer, shares his experiences and discusses the use and impact of different Flash technologies.
In this presentation, Kevin Wagner from Diablo Technologies describes the company's new Memory Channel Flash Solution.
Diablo leveraged its extensive experience in advanced memory channel interfaces and protocols to deliver a superior system architecture that directly attaches persistent memory to the host processors of a server or storage array. This innovative approach utilizes the industry standard DIMM form factor and native CPU memory interface, allowing MCS to be a drop-in replacement for standard RDIMMs. The architecture delivers the highest, most economical scaling of any enterprise storage solution on the market today, with persistent latencies approaching that of DRAM and linear scaling of throughput with additional modules.
“Flash SSDs boost system performance, and flash over PCIe is even faster, but the best performance will come from flash on the memory channel," said Jim Handy, Director at Objective Analysis. "Diablo is on the right path by providing a way to plug flash right into the DDR memory buses on today's servers.”

NVMe PCIe and TLC V-NAND It’s about TimeDell World
With an explosion in data and the relentless growth in demand for information, identifying a much more efficient means of storage has become extremely important. In this session, we will cover the key drivers behind the need for faster and more efficient storage. NVMe, a standardized protocol for PCIe-based storage, is giving users the huge leap in bandwidth required for demanding applications. Samsung, who makes the fastest NVMe SSDs on the market, will cover the benefits enabled by such technology, in areas such as fraud prevention and surgical procedures.
The technology behind flash drives – NAND memory – will be spotlighted in this presentation. Memory manufacturers have improved NAND’s value by migrating from single-level-cell to multi-level-cell designs, but the most significant evolution will be a marriage of triple-level-cell and V-NAND flash manufacturing technologies. Samsung will also provide an overview of the prospects for TLC V-NAND with mobile device manufacturers, while examining the strong potential for a much wider TLC V-NAND market in data centers.

With all the noise in the market it can be difficult to separate fact from fiction in order to evaluate the performance, efficiency and economic trade-offs for flash storage.
Specifically, you’ll learn how to determine if flash storage will help you:
Actually achieve the performance you need as you compare technology options.
Realize efficiency gains that extend beyond the promise of flash performance.
Make the economic case for real-world business decisions before taking the leap.

Scaling your Kafka streaming pipeline can be a pain - but it doesn’t have to ...HostedbyConfluent
"Kafka data pipeline maintenance can be painful.
It usually comes with complicated and lengthy recovery processes, scaling difficulties, traffic ‘moodiness’, and latency issues after downtimes and outages.
It doesn’t have to be that way!
We’ll examine one of our multi-petabyte scale Kafka pipelines, and go over some of the pitfalls we’ve encountered. We’ll offer solutions that alleviate those problems, and go over comparisons between the before and after . We’ll then explain why some common sense solutions do not work well and offer an improved, scalable and resilient way of processing your stream.
We’ll cover:
• Costs of processing in stream compared to in batch
• Scaling out for bursts and reprocessing
• Making the tradeoff between wait times and costs
• Recovering from outages
• And much more…"

Observability Concepts EVERY Developer Should Know -- DeveloperWeek Europe.pdfPaige Cruz
Monitoring and observability aren’t traditionally found in software curriculums and many of us cobble this knowledge together from whatever vendor or ecosystem we were first introduced to and whatever is a part of your current company’s observability stack.
While the dev and ops silo continues to crumble….many organizations still relegate monitoring & observability as the purview of ops, infra and SRE teams. This is a mistake - achieving a highly observable system requires collaboration up and down the stack.
I, a former op, would like to extend an invitation to all application developers to join the observability party will share these foundational concepts to build on:

Epistemic Interaction - tuning interfaces to provide information for AI supportAlan Dix
Paper presented at SYNERGY workshop at AVI 2024, Genoa, Italy. 3rd June 2024
https://alandix.com/academic/papers/synergy2024-epistemic/
As machine learning integrates deeper into human-computer interactions, the concept of epistemic interaction emerges, aiming to refine these interactions to enhance system adaptability. This approach encourages minor, intentional adjustments in user behaviour to enrich the data available for system learning. This paper introduces epistemic interaction within the context of human-system communication, illustrating how deliberate interaction design can improve system understanding and adaptation. Through concrete examples, we demonstrate the potential of epistemic interaction to significantly advance human-computer interaction by leveraging intuitive human communication strategies to inform system design and functionality, offering a novel pathway for enriching user-system engagements.
