Going Mobile LCC Library Mobile Web Launched May 3, 2010 October 2010
Why? Why? Why? More library resources are going mobile More patrons are using mobile devices
Stats – College Homepage Double mobile usage in ONE YEAR Increased mobile usage www.lanecc.edu
Developed a mobile strategy Found inspiration Visited library mobile sites Attended presentation Online NW Winter 2010 Code{4} Lib article: “ Library/Mobile: Tips and Designing and Developing Mobile Web Sites” at http://journal.code4lib.org/articles/2055
User Goals and Needs People do not “surf” on their phones. They do not browse. They are looking for what they need. Start out with what library patrons want to find , not search for.
Avoid Excess graphics (size or quantity) Long articles Lots of clicks Large files/downloads that could cause a mobile device to crash or freeze
Keep it Simple Keep it simple – Navigation Keep it simple – Layout Keep it simple – Styles
Tech Stuff Based on OSU’s findings we decided NOT to use cascade stylesheets to display our current webpages as mobile. Not all mobile browsers adhere to the W3C specifications to use the handheld media type to link to mobile stylesheets. To detect hand held devices we used PHP to detect the device type reading the UserAgent string. Like OSU Libraries, we use reverse detection, to detect if a user is not on a mobile device because there are a smaller number of desktop operating systems.
