Brandon Howard wrote a letter to the judges of his senior project describing the desk he built for his project. He chose to build a desk to challenge himself with something new. He researched wood types and built an oak desk with a walnut finish. While his research paper was not very helpful, he learned skills like using hand tools. Brandon overcame obstacles like money, time, and measurements through patience and diligence. He was pleased to learn he can produce quality work and enjoys working with wood. Though he learned carpentry skills, Brandon plans to study engineering in college.

Dear Judges:
Hello, my name is Brandon Howard and I am a senior here at Creekview High School. I am
aspiring to be an engineer in my life although I am unsure of the field of engineering I am most
interested in. For my senior project I chose to build a desk. I chose this simply because I wanted
to try something totally new and something challenging just like I will be doing soon in life in
regards to college. I wanted to see how I could do with something I have never done before and
how I would handle it.
My product is an all oak desk with a walnut finish. My research paper helped me to decide on the
type of wood that I wanted to use and the skills necessary to complete my desk. The research
paper was not as helpful as I would have liked it to be, but I still learned valuable information
from my paper like how to use hand tools and what it would be like to be a carpenter. The
obstacles I face in the building of my desk were money, time, and measurements. I overcame
each of these by being patient and working diligently to complete my product. I would say my
overall project was a success and turned out well.
The building of a desk relates to the career of carpentry or woodworking. I learned through this
process that I use to lack patience in what I would do and that by taking my time I can produce
quality work. I was fairly pleased in learning that I can be a patient person. I also learned that I
enjoy working with wood and with my hands. I do not intend to pursue this as a career in
college. I am going to Southern Polytechnic State University to pursue a career in engineering
and I am currently undecided on the type of engineering I will pursue.
I think the senior project is a nice idea and I understand the concept behind it. I thoroughly
enjoyed the senior project, but was displeased with how much it actually interfered with my
school work. I think it was a good experience and I liked learning more about myself before
college. Thank you for taking the time to read my letter.
Sincerely,
