Letter naming ability is a strong predictor of future reading and writing success in young children. Being able to accurately and fluently name letters explains significant amounts of variance in later reading ability, and is correlated with gains in phonics acquisition, reading fluency, and overall literacy according to several studies from 2000-2008. Letter naming follows similar developmental patterns across languages.
