Koen Voskuil worked as an intern at the Safechem laboratory in Horgen, Switzerland for Dow Chemical Company in 2013 and 2014. In his first internship from July to August 2013, Koen learned and applied the laboratory's standard operating procedures and created a new customer order form. In his second internship from July to August 2014, Koen developed an automated reporting system using Excel VBA to expedite the delivery of analysis reports to customers. Koen's supervisors were very satisfied with his work and innovative ideas, and he helped increase the laboratory's productivity and efficiency.

Koen Voskuil worked in the Safechem department in Horgen ( Switzerland), a subsidiary
of The Dow Chemical Company, for two consecutive years in 2013 and 2014 on two
separate student placement assignments.
In his first assignment, 1st
of July until the 30th
of August 2013, Koen’s main assignment
was to learn and apply all Standard Operating Procedures of the Safechem laboratory in
Horgen, Switzerland in order to prepare for the move of the laboratory to another location
in September of 2013. Koen then spent one week transferring his knowledge and
teaching to the local lab technicians. Furthermore, Koen took the initiative to create a
new customer order form to enable an easy way for them to fill it in. The form is still used
today.
In the Safechem lab, he performed the following tasks:
 GC and GC-MS
 Ion chromatography
 Karl-Fischer Test
 Oil compatibility tests
 Solvent analysis
 Preparations of stock solutions
 Rotary evaporator
 Light microscope use
 Complete removal of backlogged and overdue orders
 Increased the lab’s results output by 50%
 Recording experimental results in a lab journal
 Keeping an organized and clean lab
During the second assignment, 1st
until 31st
of July 2014, Koen’s main assignment was to
create an automated reporting system using Excel’s VBA to speed up the backlogging of
reports to customers about their solvent or oil analysis. Koen’s reporting system helped
his co-workers to be more efficient and quicker to complete their reports and saving them
half of their time. Within one month Koen had made a fully functional reporting system
that was easy to use and adapted accordingly to the various inputs given. The report
system is still used today.
We have been very satisfied with Koen’s contribution. He delivered high quality work and
met the very tight deadlines he was given. Koen is a great team player, a fast learner and
comes up with many innovative ideas.
