ERS and Maths Buddhist Attitudes to the Environment and the use of angles.
Aims of the Lessons: To understand how to use angles to split a circle into eight equal sections. To evaluate the Buddhist attitudes from the 8 fold path and how they could be linked to environmental attitudes
Citizenship Criteria Covered 1b Respect for different religions 2a, b and C Developing skills of enquiry and communication 3a Using imagination to consider other peoples experiences
Starter Can you remember what these terms mean? Extra points if you can remember how to work them out! Radius Circumference Angles
Task 1 Using a protractor, compass and a ruler, you should create a large circle split into 8 equal sections on an A3 piece of paper. The steps on the next slide will help you.
With your compass, draw a large circle. Try to use as much as the paper as possible. There are 360 ° in a circle To create 8 sections, you need to divide 360 ° by 8. Write your answer down. This number shows how many degrees each section should be. Draw a straight line from the centre spot of your circle to the edge. Place the 0 ° line of your protractor on this line. Now measure the correct number of degrees and mark on the paper. Next join this mark with the centre spot. You should repeat this process until you have 8 equal segments.
Plenary Check someone else’s work by measuring how accurate their angles are. Write a short step by step guide explaining how to complete the circle you have drawn today. Be prepared to share your guide with the rest of the class.
Task 2 Comparing the Buddhist 8 Fold Path to the environment Look carefully at the next screen which is a model of the 8 fold path

Task 2 cont. Watch the video that relates the Buddhist’s 8-fold view to the environment. Open the Word document entitled “The 8 Fold Path” Attempt to give examples of what Buddhists should do if they had to adapt the 8 Fold Path to the the protection of the environment. Transfer your ideas to your A3 Wheel / Circle
Teamwork Think carefully about what has to be done Headings in each section e.g. right action Completion of word document Transfer of ideas from word document Images / pictures added to wheel Split the tasks up between you. Don’t all do the same work four times!!!!
Plenary Move around the room and look and other peoples work Compare their answers with yours As a whole class discuss what the different ideas were
