2. NOVEMBER ART APPRECIATION CLASS
• Hi there class, we are done talking about the foundations and basic
information about arts..until the 2-D art issued and subjects.
• While we talk about the foundations and meanings of art in the first
part and during the first week, the second part was all about art
awareness, creativity and communication - meaning how are these
things related to the arts of the people. Also, in this section, we
manifested how art works and how art pieces are created and used.
We are also done with 3-D arts. Now, we are getting into the deeper
meanings and associations of Arts - ARTS AS CULTURAL HERITAGE.
20. Jiahu Symbols
• The Jiahu symbols
• (simplified Chinese: 贾湖契刻符
号; traditional Chinese: 賈湖契
刻符號; pinyin: Jiǎhú qìkè fúhào)
consist of 16 distinct markings
on prehistoric artifacts found in
Jiahu, a neolithic Peiligang
culture site found in Henan,
China, and excavated in 1989.
The Jiahu symbols are dated to
around 6000 BC.

21. Cuneiforms
• Cuneiform is a system of writing first
developed by the ancient Sumerians of
Mesopotamia c. 3500-3000 BCE. It is
considered the most significant among the
many cultural contributions of the Sumerians
and the greatest among those of the
Sumerian city of Uruk which advanced the
writing of cuneiform c. 3200 BCE; What does
word cuneiform mean?
• wedge-shaped
• cuneiform, system of writing used in the
ancient Middle East. The name, a coinage
from Latin and Middle French roots meaning
“wedge-shaped,” has been the modern
designation from the early 18th century
onward.
24. Hieroglyphics
• A hieroglyph (Greek for "sacred
carvings") was a character of the
ancient Egyptian writing system.
Logographic scripts that are
pictographic in form in a way
reminiscent of ancient Egyptian are
also sometimes called
"hieroglyphs". ... The Egyptians
invented the pictorial script.
• Hieroglyphs were written from top
to bottom, in long lines from right
to left, without spaces or

26. Relief Sculptures
• What were Mesopotamian sculptures like?
• Mesopotamian sculptures were predominantly
created for religious and political purposes. Common
materials included clay, metal, and stone fashioned
into reliefs and sculptures in the round . ... Hieratic
scale was often used in Mesopotamian sculpture to
convey the significance of gods and royalty.

27. Epic of Gilgamesh
• Epic of Gilgamesh and The Flood

literature from ancient
Mesopotamia is the story of
Gilgamesh, a legendary ruler of
Uruk, and his search for
immortality. The Epic of
Gilgamesh is a huge work, the
longest piece of literature in
Akkadian (the language of
Babylonia and Assyria)
28. Hammurabi Code- Hammurabi was a Mesopotamian king who recorded a
system of laws called the Code of Hammurabi. He ordered 282 laws engraved in stone
and placed in a public location for everyone to see.
• The Code of Hammurabi is a
Babylonian legal text composed
c. 1755–1750 BC. It is the
longest, best-organised, and
best-preserved legal text from
the ancient Near East. It is
written in the Old Babylonian
dialect of Akkadian, purportedly
by Hammurabi, sixth king of the
First Dynasty of Babylon.
