The Pentecostal Revival in Brazil
Slides prepared by Celso Napoleon
The Pentecostal movement began in 1901 in Topeka, Kansas under the leadership of Charles Parham. It spread from there to the famous Azusa Street Revival in Los Angeles in 1906 led by William Seymour. The movement emphasizes baptism by the Holy Spirit with the evidence of speaking in tongues. It rapidly grew worldwide in the early 20th century through missionary efforts and evangelists. Major Pentecostal denominations and independent churches now exist globally, emphasizing spiritual gifts and spreading the Pentecostal message.
This document examines the difference between true Christianity and counterfeit Christianity. It discusses how few Christians experience daily joy, and defines joy as a supernatural delight in God and his goodness, distinguishing it from happiness which depends on circumstances. It notes that depression stems from a lack of trust in God's promises. The document outlines how there are those who think they can have Christianity's fruits without commitment to Christ, and those who think they are Christian but have not committed their lives to Christ. It examines Philippians 3:1-3 to outline the qualities of the false Christian versus the true Christian, and how the Bible's main theme is setting forth the gospel, with a secondary theme of identifying true Christians.
Acts 19, Receiving the Holy Spirit, baptism of the Holy Spirit, becoming hard...Valley Bible Fellowship
Paul arrives in Ephesus and finds some disciples who had not received the Holy Spirit. He baptizes them in Jesus' name and lays hands on them so they receive the Holy Spirit. Some Jews try to invoke Jesus' name in exorcisms but are rebuked by demons. Paul teaches in the school of Tyrannus for two years and many miracles are performed through him. When some become hardened against the gospel, Paul withdraws and reasons daily. Demetrius stirs up a riot against Paul in the theater, accusing him of threatening the cult of Artemis.
BLC Sermon - That awkward moment when you realize Jesus called you and I - 20...Leigh Wong
Sermon based on Lectionary readings for the 3rd Sunday in Epiphany: Isaiah 9:1-4; 1 Corinthians 1:10-18; and Matthew 4:12-23.
The main idea was to explore the epiphany of how God has selected us to be His emissaries/ambassadors and what that means for us as a community of faith.

There are lots of theories out there about 'pre-tribulation or post-tribulation', but this should not be a basis for dividing true believers; as ultimately, the most important thing is that we are in a relationship with God, that we are walking closely with God and that we are ready for whatever comes in the end times.
Theology of mission biblical bases (english)QLang Project
This document provides an overview of the biblical bases for Christian missions. It discusses how God intended from the beginning for humanity to partner with Him in establishing His kingdom, and how this mission is central to the Old and New Testaments. The Old Testament shows how God called Israel to be a nation of priests to the other nations. While Israel failed in this role, the New Testament establishes how Jesus and the Holy Spirit empower Christians to continue this mission of representing God and humanity to each other. The biblical bases for missions include God's mission, the mission of His people, the mission of Christ, and the empowerment of believers through the Holy Spirit to make disciples of all nations.
This document discusses biblical evangelization and the new evangelization. It emphasizes reading scripture and its importance in evangelization efforts. Various sources and authors are cited that promote scripture reading and meditation. Elements of an effective biblical evangelization program are outlined, including knowing the local culture, inviting sharing and witness, integrating the word of God and the Eucharist, and empowering all Christians in their call to evangelize. Forming groups to support ongoing evangelization efforts is also mentioned.
Dogmatic Constitution on Divine Revelationphvillacrucis
This document outlines the key chapters and contents of the Dogmatic Constitution on Divine Revelation issued by Pope Paul VI on November 18, 1965. It establishes six chapters that will explore Revelation itself, the transmission of Divine Revelation, Sacred Scripture and its inspiration/interpretation, the Old Testament, the New Testament, and the role of Sacred Scripture in the life of the Church. The document aims to explain how God has progressively revealed himself to humanity through Scripture and Tradition.

The holy spirit and speaking in tonguesGLENN PEASE
This is a collection of writings dealing with the issue of speaking in tongues. There is debate on this issue, and Christians have different views. It is a challenge to read them and come to a conclusion as to what is the most biblical view,.
This document provides a historical overview of baptism from ancient times to the present. It discusses various types of baptism mentioned in the Bible and describes how the practice of baptism evolved over the centuries. Key points include that early Christians generally immersed converts in water as a sign of repentance, infant baptism emerged in the 2nd century, the Protestant Reformation led to debates over baptism doctrine between Lutherans, Calvinists and Anabaptists, and differences over baptism still exist between Christian denominations today.
The document discusses the sacrament of confirmation in Christianity. It begins by providing biblical foundations for confirmation from the Old and New Testaments. It then describes confirmation as one of the three sacraments of initiation that imparts a permanent character and strengthens the grace received in baptism. The document outlines the recipients and minister of confirmation, with bishops being the original ministers. It also describes the rites, matter (chrism oil), form (words of blessing), and effects (rooting in God and strengthening faith) of the sacrament. It concludes that confirmation calls Christians to a mission of spreading the faith.
The document discusses a lesson about building God's kingdom through making disciples. It describes how the early church in Antioch sent Barnabas and Paul on the first missionary journey to Asia Minor to establish churches and make disciples. It then provides details from the biblical passages of Acts 13 and 14, highlighting how the church was led by the Holy Spirit to send missionaries out to spread the gospel, and how Barnabas and Paul worked to strengthen the new believers and churches by encouraging them and teaching them.

EBD | 1st Quarter 2023 | CPAD – Adults – TOPIC: VIVE YOUR WORK – The Scriptures’ call to the brokenness and power of God | Sunday Bible School | Lesson 11: Revival and the Mission of the Church
Slides prepared by Celso Napoleon
The document provides an overview of what constitutes the gospel according to Pastor Charles E. Whisnant. It discusses that the gospel is more than just believing in Jesus, but also includes God redeeming humanity and including people in His kingdom through Jesus' life, death, resurrection, and ascension. It notes four key ingredients that make the gospel effective: it must be preached in word, power, the Holy Spirit, and with assurance. The document examines the characteristics of true saving faith, including production, affection, continuation, transformation, and jubilation. It discusses how the believers in Thessalonica became examples to others and strong witnesses through their exemplary lives and faith in God.
3. The Spirit Leads the Disciples in a New DirectionFr. Carl Chudy
The document traces the development of the early Christian church's understanding of its mission and identity based on events described in the Acts of the Apostles. It describes how the church moved from seeing its mission as focused on Jerusalem and Jews to embracing a universal mission to both Jews and Gentiles. Key events included Pentecost empowering the disciples to bear witness, Philip's preaching to the Samaritans and an Ethiopian, and Peter's acceptance of the conversion of Gentiles like Cornelius. The church began to see itself not just as a sect of Judaism but as having its own identity and destiny to spread the gospel to all nations.
This Presentation is a compilation of the various historical events, including the ones that happened in the Holy Bible, that brought revival and the results of such prominent incidents.
Galatians Session #2 Trapped by a Fake GospelGrace Canberra
The document discusses how the Galatian churches had abandoned the real gospel message they originally received from Paul for a false gospel being promoted by others. Paul expresses amazement that they would so quickly desert the true gospel of grace through Christ. He warns that anyone, including himself or an angel, who preaches a different gospel than the one they received should be considered accursed. Paul's goal is to please God, not people, in defending the authentic gospel.
1. The document discusses key differences between traditional Christian teachings about Jesus and the teachings of the Divine Principle. It explains that in the Divine Principle, Jesus was meant to establish God's kingdom on Earth by marrying and having a sinless family to create a pure bloodline, rather than dying on the cross.
2. It notes Jesus needed to graduate to the family level to fulfill his role as the Messiah/True Parent, but was unable to marry. His death on the cross instead established Christianity as the "second Israel."
3. The document compares traditional Christian beliefs about Jesus' resurrection, disciples, and forgiveness of sins to the explanations provided in the Divine Principle. It suggests some traditional Christian

2. Session 1 introduces the purpose, authorship, date, and intended audience of the Gospel of John. It highlights how John's Gospel differs from the Synoptic Gospels and was written to instill belief in Jesus Christ.
3. Sessions 2 through 4 discuss the identity and pre-existence of Christ as the Logos, His signs and miracles that bring disciples to faith, and how He reveals the Father through His authority and actions.
4. Session 5 covers Christ's incarnation, death, resurrection, and ascension in
This document provides an overview of the four canonical gospels of the New Testament - Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John. It discusses the intended audiences and key themes of each gospel. The main points are:
- The gospels are based on the words and deeds of Jesus as witnessed by his early followers and are meant to convey what the early Christian community believed about Jesus.
- Matthew, Mark, and Luke are known as the synoptic gospels because they share similar narratives of Jesus' life and ministry. John's gospel has a more theological focus.
- Each gospel was written for a different intended audience - Matthew for Jewish Christians, Mark for persecuted Christians, Luke for Gent
1) The gospel is the good news about Jesus - His life, death for our sins, resurrection, and ascension. It tells of how God restores his reign through Jesus and how we can be forgiven and justified by faith.
2) There are different aspects to understanding the gospel, such as Jesus preaching about God's kingdom while Paul emphasized justification by faith. Both focused on Christ dying for sins.
3) The basic gospel message is that we are sinners but Jesus died for our sins so we can be forgiven and reconciled to God through repentance and faith in Him.
God is always just in how he judges people. The Israelites were wrongly claiming that they were suffering unjustly for the sins of past generations, but Ezekiel explains that each person is responsible for their own sins, not the sins of others. God judges each person based on their own righteousness or wickedness, not that of their ancestors. The passage teaches that individuals will face consequences for their own actions, not the actions of others, because God is fair and just in his judgments.

A375 Example Taste the taste of the Lord, the taste of the Lord The taste of...franktsao4
It seems that current missionary work requires spending a lot of money, preparing a lot of materials, and traveling to far away places, so that it feels like missionary work. But what was the result they brought back? It's just a lot of photos of activities, fun eating, drinking and some playing games. And then we have to do the same thing next year, never ending. The church once mentioned that a certain missionary would go to the field where she used to work before the end of his life. It seemed that if she had not gone, no one would be willing to go. The reason why these missionary work is so difficult is that no one obeys God’s words, and the Bible is not the main content during missionary work, because in the eyes of those who do not obey God’s words, the Bible is just words and cannot be connected with life, so Reading out God's words is boring because it doesn't have any life experience, so it cannot be connected with human life. I will give a few examples in the hope that this situation can be changed. A375

5. CLASS BIBLE READING Acts 19:1-7
1- And it came to pass, that, while Apollos was in Corinth,
Paul, having gone through all the upper regions, came to
Ephesus, and, finding some disciples there,
2- He said to them: Did you already receive the Holy Ghost
when you believed? And they said to him: We have not
even heard that there is a Holy Ghost.
3- he asked them, then: In what are you baptized, then?
And they said, In the baptism of John.
6. 4- But Paul said: Surely John baptized with the
baptism of repentance, telling the people to believe
in him who was to come after him, that is, in Jesus
Christ.
5-And those who heard were baptized in the name
of the Lord Jesus.
6- And when Paul had laid his hands on them, the
Holy Ghost came upon them; and they spoke in
tongues and prophesied.
7- These were, in all, about twelve men.
7. INTRODUCTION
The arrival of the Pentecostal Movement in Brazil changed
the spiritual reality of this country unquestionably and
irreversibly in terms of liturgy, proclamation of the Gospel,
manifestation of God's power with signs, prodigies and
wonders. Coming from the United States, the missionaries
Daniel Berg and Gunnar Vingren arrived in Brazilian lands
in 1910. Through the instrumentality of these servants,
God started the greatest spiritual revival in Brazilian lands.
The Pentecostal Revival in Brazil is what we will study in
this lesson. KEYWORD: PENTECOST
9. I- THE MOVEMENT OF ACTS IS
REPEATED IN BRAZIL
1-Pentecost* among the saved. In Acts 19.2 there is a question
from the Apostle Paul to the disciples in Ephesus: “Did you
already receive the Holy Ghost when you believed?”. This
question can also be asked like this: “Having believed, did you
receive the Holy Ghost?”; and also: “Did you receive the Holy
Ghost after you believed?”. The modalities of the same question
reveal a fact according to the context of the passage of Acts
19.1-7: the disciples of Ephesus were baptized in the name of the
Lord Jesus, that is, they already had saving faith; then they
received the baptism in the Holy Ghost through the laying on of
hands.
10. I- THE MOVEMENT OF ACTS IS
REPEATED IN BRAZIL
2- The fullness of the Holy Ghost. As we saw in a previous
lesson, there are two distinct experiences in the book of Acts of the
Apostles: 1) the experience of salvation; 2) the baptism in the Holy
Ghost. In Acts 19, we see these two experiences very clearly: first,
the disciples were baptized in water and then received the Holy
Ghost with the laying on of hands. This receiving had physical
evidence of tongues and prophecy (Acts 19:3). The Baptism in the
Holy Ghost experience is so different from salvation that it can be
physically identified through tongues as confirmation of the “gift of
God”. This is what happened to the disciples in Ephesus.
11. I- THE MOVEMENT OF ACTS IS
REPEATED IN BRAZIL
3- Called by God. Something similar happened here in
Brazil through Daniel Berg and Gunnar Vingren. By God's
direction, the two Swedish missionaries arrived in Brazil on
November 19, 1910. At the beginning of the 20th century,
the existence of historic or traditional churches
predominated. Consequently, there were many Christians
who had experienced salvation in Christ but had never
experienced the Baptism in the Spirit like the first believers
in Acts.
12. I- THE MOVEMENT OF ACTS IS
REPEATED IN BRAZIL
God used Daniel Berg and Gunnar Vingren to show these
Christians that they could no longer ignore the blessed
person of the Holy Ghost. The glorious experiences of
Acts of the Apostles began to be repeated in Brazilian
lands. It was possible to be a Christian with more spiritual
fervor.
13. SYNOPSIS I
In Brazil, there was a call from God for a people to
live in the fullness of the Holy Ghost.
14. II- THE BIRTH OF A NEW MOVEMENT
1- The preaching of the Pentecostal revival. The
preaching of the missionaries drew the attention of the
traditional churches, causing discomfort and concern. They
were not well accepted by the pastors of the historic
churches. Sister Celina de Albuquerque, a member of a
traditional church, accepted the message of Baptism in
the Holy Ghost and made the decision to stay at home,
praying to God to confirm that that doctrine was correct.
15. II- THE BIRTH OF A NEW MOVEMENT
Thus, Sister Celina Albuquerque received the gift of God
and, therefore, is considered the first Brazilian baptized in
Espírito Santo in our country. Other brothers joined her
and were also baptized in the Holy Ghost. Unfortunately,
the direction of the church of which these brothers were
part, did not agree with that spiritual revival and promoted
a meeting to confirm who would agree with the
missionaries' message.
16. II- THE BIRTH OF A NEW MOVEMENT
At that meeting, 9 brothers stood up and were asked to
leave the church. Thus begins a history of persecution that
would mark the Pentecostal Movement in Brazil.
20. II- THE BIRTH OF A NEW MOVEMENT
2- Growth and pursuit. The persecutions against
Pentecostals were great, as Jesus said (Mt 5.10). They took
place in the liturgical sphere among others. For example, in
the first baptisms, in Pará, some enemies of the work tried
to prevent the baptismal act. There are records that one of
them even pulled out a dagger to attack the missionary
Gunnar Vingren.
21. II- THE BIRTH OF A NEW MOVEMENT
It was Sister Celina who prevented the crime by throwing
herself in front of the perpetrator. Other records show
that, in Mosqueiro, in the interior of the state, a preaching
house was surrounded and stoned. Believers had to leave to
protect themselves. Stories like these abound in the
unfolding Pentecostal Movement in Brazil. However, the
Lord gave many deliverances to his people (Sl 34.7).
22. II- THE BIRTH OF A NEW MOVEMENT
3- Divine cures. If there were persecutions and difficulties
at the beginning of the work, there were also glorious
interventions by God in the lives of his people. In the
Journal of a Pioneer, written by Missionary Gunnar
Vingren, see the following account: “a sister was healed of
an incurable lip disease.”
23. II- THE BIRTH OF A NEW MOVEMENT
A paralyzed man who was dying and could no longer speak
was healed and later came to our services. A child, who was
dying with a fever, was healed. An old man who had
suffered from hernia for nine years was healed. Another
man, who had been sick many months with a fever and his
whole body was swollen, was both healed and baptized
with the Holy Ghost.
24. II- THE BIRTH OF A NEW MOVEMENT
He also received the gift of prophecy [...] a man who saw
his son die, immediately took him in his arms and began to
call on the name of the Lord. Immediately, the child came
back to life. The wife, when she saw what happened, gave
herself to the Lord ”. These are some of the many
powerful signs that marked the Pentecostal Revival in
Brazil. They were the signs of God confirming the
preaching of our pioneers (Mark 16:20).
25. SYNOPSIS II
The birth of the new Movement in Brazil had Pentecostal
preaching, growth, persecution and divine healings
26. III- THE EXPANSION OF THE
PENTECOSTAL REVIVAL
1- A centrifugal model. The spiritual revival made our
church in Brazil seek a centrifugal growth model, that is,
from the inside out. They started cults in a house, in a small
hall, in a neighborhood, in a city; Pentecostals evangelized
through the streets, homes, schools, hospitals. Further
ahead, the brothers sought a larger location to meet the
expansion of the work.
27. III- THE EXPANSION OF THE
PENTECOSTAL REVIVAL
And the Lord saved, healed, baptized in the Holy Ghost.
The Pentecostal Revival was growing in a way never seen in
our country. What Jesus promised was happening: “But you
will receive power when the Holy Ghost comes upon you;
and you will be my witnesses both in Jerusalem and in all
Judea and Samaria and to the ends of the earth ′′ (At 1.8).
28. III- THE EXPANSION OF THE
PENTECOSTAL REVIVAL
2- An accentuated growth. Pentecostals in Brazil do not grow
because they look for people in other churches, but grow because
they evangelize and disciple them through the Gospel of Christ.
According to IBGE data in 2010, evangelicals were made up of
approximately 42 million people. Of that number, the
overwhelming majority are from the Pentecostal tradition.
Certainly, the next IBGE survey confirms the upward trend. All
of this was the fruit of the mighty Pentecostal Revival that God
sent to our nation.
29. SYNOPSIS III
There was a model of centrifugal growth and, therefore,
the Pentecostal movement had a sharp growth
30. CONCLUSION
Before the Pentecostal Revival on Brazilian soil, what
dominated the religious scenario was the doctrinal system
of the historic churches that did not admit the baptism in
the Holy Ghost, with an evident sign of speaking in new
tongues, as well as the exercise of spiritual gifts. These
spiritist manifestations, based on the Word of God, are
marks of the true Pentecostal Revival in Brazil.
