Exodus 16.1-7; 1 Corinthians 10.10,11
Exodus 16
1 - And, leaving Elim, all the congregation of the children of Israel came
to the wilderness of Sin, which is between Elim and Sinai, on the
fifteenth day of the second month, after they came out of the land of
Egypt.
2 - And all the congregation of the children of Israel murmured against
Moses and against Aaron in the wilderness.
3 - And the children of Israel said unto them, O that we had died by the
hand of the Lord in the land of Egypt, when we sat by the meat-pots,
when we ate bread until we were full! Because you have brought us out
into this wilderness to starve this entire crowd. 6
7. 4 - Then the Lord said to Moses: Behold, I will rain bread from heaven
for you, and the people will go out and gather their daily portion each
day, so that I may see whether they walk in my law or not.
5 - And it will happen, on the sixth day, that they will prepare what they
gather; and it will be double what they harvest each day.
6 - Then Moses and Aaron said to all the children of Israel, In the
evening you will know that the Lord has brought you out of the land of
Egypt,
7 - and tomorrow you will see the glory of the Lord, because he has
heard your murmurings against the Lord; for who are we that you should
murmur against us?
7
8. 1 Corinthians 10
10 - And do not murmur, as some of them also
murmured and perished by the destroyer.
11 - Now all this came to them as figures, and they are
written for our warning, for whom the ends of the ages
have come.

9. • INTRODUCTION
It is true that there are evil actions that come directly from the
Enemy, but it is also true that there are those that are produced
within us as works of the flesh. One of them is the sin of
Murmuration. This sin is so dangerous in our journey that it can
lead to our downfall. It does not happen instantly, as disbelief
usually follows. Yes, unbelief and murmuring go together.
Therefore, in this lesson, we will study the dangers of
murmuring in light of the apostle's recommendation: “Do all
things without grumbling” (Phil 2:14).
9
12. • I – MURMURATION IN THE BIBLE
1. What is murmuring? The main words for murmuring in the
Bible are the following: from Hebrew, the verb liyn, “to grumble”,
“to complain” and “to murmur” (Nm 14.36); and the noun
higgayown, “meditation”, “solemn music”, “thought”, “conspiracy”
(Lm 3.62); from the Greek, the verb goggúzō, “to murmur”, “to
grumble”, “to complain”, “to say something against in a low tone”,
“of those who talk secretly” (John 7:32). According to these words,
the murmurer's spirit is dominated by discontent, disagreement,
anger, complaints and opposition. Not even God escapes him, as it
is enough to remember what was done against Moses and Aaron (Ex
15.24; 17.3; Num 14.27; 16.41). 12
13. 2. The behavior of murmurers. According to the two
testaments of the Bible, the evil of murmuring was among
God's people, among the Israelites of Moses' day (Ex 16:11); in
the days of Jesus Christ with the scribes and Pharisees (Luke
15:2); in the church in Jerusalem at the beginning (Acts 6:1). This
evil reveals inconvenient behavior, a restless temperament,
sarcastic hints. The behavior of the murmurers is so serious that
it threatened the unity of the Church in Acts, if it were not for
the care of the apostles (Acts 6.1-7). Therefore, we need to be
very careful with this behavior, as the sin of murmuring, in
addition to weakening our spiritual life, also negatively alters our
emotional and physical health.
13
14. 14
People complain of hunger and again God sends
quails - The Bible | Hebrews argue that they can no
longer bear to eat manna (RECORD, 2022).
15. 15
Then the LORD sent venomous serpents against
the people, whose bite burned like live coals, and
many died of poison among the people of Israel.
(Numbers 21:6)
16. 3. The murmuring believer. Anyone who says they are saved
in Christ and has the Holy Ghost in their life cannot naturalize
the practice of murmuring. It is not normal for a believer filled
with the Holy Ghost to indulge in this sin. In this sense,
indiscipline and neglect of the virtues of the Spirit are present
(Gal 5.16). When a believer becomes a murmurer, he becomes
an instrument of the Evil One against the work of Christ in the
world, allowing the Devil to dominate him and use him in every
way. Thus, it is not possible for the murmuring believer to be
joyful, kind and pleasant through his attitude, since his soul is
sick, as the body will only be bright if the eyes are good (Mt
6.22,23).
16
17. Murmuring means “mumbling” and
“complaining” and the murmurer's spirit
is dominated by discontent, disagreement,
anger, complaints and opposition.
• SYNOPSIS I
17
19. 19
• II – MURMURATION: IMPEDEDMENT OF THE FIRST
GENERATION FROM THE PROMISED LAND
1. Murmur against God's chosen leaders. God chose Moses and his
brother, as his helper, to free the people of Israel from Pharaoh's slavery
and lead them to the Promised Land (Ex 7.1,2). After experiencing great
deliverance, these people began to systematically murmur against the
leadership of Moses and Aaron, claiming that the Lawgiver was leading
them to die in the middle of the desert (Ex 16.3). In these reports, we
see that murmuring follows unbelief. There is an absence of faith and
one has to choose what is bad: the practice of murmuring. Therefore,
one can no longer expect attitudes of kindness, sincerity and truth from
those who submerge themselves in murmuring, but rather impatience,
ingratitude and disrespect for biblical leadership (1 Thess 5.12,13; Heb
13.17).
20. 20
2. Murmur against God. The Lord God responded to
the people's murmurings, saying that he would bring down
“bread from heaven” (Ex 16:4). However, the Lord made
it clear that he contemplated their “murmurs”, but treated
the people with pity and compassion (Ex 16.12). Now, the
Lord God contemplates all our actions, he knows what we
need and need. Therefore, when faced with a difficult
circumstance, it is much better to turn to Him in a
humble, gracious and loving way than to approach Him
with ingratitude, complaints and murmuring (Heb 4.16).
21. 21
3. Why is murmuring dangerous? The Word of God says,
“who has hardened himself against him [God] and had peace?”
(Job 9.4). In light of this text, we can say that murmuring
constitutes an act of extreme impiety against God. It becomes
dangerous because, in addition to revealing an absence of faith,
it limits our ability to see God's actions in our lives and in the
context in which we are. Therefore, murmuring blinds us before
God. We no longer remember the great works of the Lord in
our lives. It is not by chance that the apostle Paul brings together
episodes of the Israelites' murmuring so that modern-day
believers should be careful and not practice this sin in order not
to be destroyed (1 Cor 10:10,11; Rom 15:4).
22. Murmuring prevented the first generation of
Israelites from entering the Promised Land.
• SYNOPSIS II

24. 24
• III – MURMURATION: A SIN THAT PREVENTS US
FROM ENTERING HEAVENLY CANAAN
1. The end of the murmuring Israelites. Examining
the texts of Numbers 14.29 and 16.41-49, we realize that,
because of murmuring, the Israelites of that generation
did not enter the land of promise, they were killed and
buried in the desert (Nm 14.29). Israel's pilgrimage
through the desert serves as an example and warning on
our journey so that we do not adopt their murmuring
behavior. Due to this sin, the Israelites lost sight of divine
purposes and did not achieve the fulfillment of the
promise.
25. 25
2. The fate of the murmurers. In light of the accounts in the
book of Numbers, the apostle Paul gives a serious warning to
the people of the New Covenant: “And do not murmur, as some
of them also murmured and perished by the destroyer” (1 Cor
10:10). This means that a believer who continues to practice
murmuring is already spiritually dead, has lost communion with
the Lord and no longer takes pleasure in spiritual things.
Therefore, his destiny is death, which, in the light of the Old
Testament, unfortunately, has a physical and spiritual character.
Murmuring is a danger throughout our Christian journey.
26. 26
3. The evils of murmuring. There are many evils that murmuring can
cause. For example, in the life of the local church, murmuring can bring
spiritual discouragement, community strife, spiritual rebellion and
ministerial divisions. This process ends the life of communion of the
local church. Furthermore, our Lord said that the kingdom divided
against itself is “devastated” and will not “stand” (Matt. 12:25; cf. Luke
1:17-22). There is also evil of a spiritual nature. For example, murmuring
also results in lies and slander, therefore, the Holy Ghost does not
inhabit a life that is dominated by these types of carnal works (Eph 4:30;
Gal 5:19-21). Therefore, we affirm that anyone who indulges in such a
practice ends up attracting other sins into their lives, such as: idolatry,
rebellion, adultery, blasphemies against God. As a result, he ends up
providing service to the Enemy and parking himself in the middle of the
celestial path.
27. Murmuring is a sin and can prevent us
from entering heavenly Canaan.

• CONCLUSION
In this lesson, we saw how dangerous and destructive the
practice of murmuring is for both spiritual life and community
life in the local church throughout our Christian journey. We
must therefore not ignore the warning in the Word of God
regarding the sin of murmuring (Rm 15.4). Now, God's will is
for us to participate in his promises. Therefore, let us avoid the
evil of murmuring in our homes, churches and anywhere we
interact with others.
29. 1. According to the lesson, what is the murmurer's spirit
dominated by?
The murmurer's spirit is dominated by discontent, disagreement,
anger, complaints and opposition.
2. Why do we need to be cautious about murmuring behavior?
We need to be very careful with this behavior, as the sin of
murmuring, in addition to weakening our spiritual life, also
negatively alters our emotional and physical health.
3. How did the Lord God respond to the Israelites’ murmuring?
The Lord God responded to the people's murmurings, saying that
he would bring down “bread from heaven” (Ex 16:4). However, the
Lord made it clear that he contemplated their “murmurs”, but
treated the people with pity and compassion (Ex 16.12).

30. 4. What do we notice when examining the texts in the book of
Numbers?
Examining the texts of Numbers 14.29 and 16.41-49, we realize
that, because of murmuring, the Israelites of that generation did
not enter the land of promise, they were killed and buried in the
desert (Nm 14.29).
5. What does Paul bring to the Church in light of the example of
the book of Numbers?
In light of the accounts in the book of Numbers, the apostle
Paul gives a serious warning to the people of the New Covenant
(1 Cor 10:10). This means that a believer who continues to
practice murmuring is already spiritually dead, has lost
communion with the Lord and no longer takes pleasure in
spiritual things. 30
