Romans 6.11-14; 1 John 2.15-17
Romans 6
11 - In the same way, consider yourselves as dead to sin, but alive to God
in Christ Jesus our Lord.
12 - Therefore, do not let sin reign in your mortal body, so that you obey
it in its lusts;
13 - neither do you present your members to sin through instruments of
iniquity; but present yourselves to God as those alive from the dead, and
your members to God as instruments of righteousness.
14 - For sin shall not have dominion over you, for you are not under the
law, but under grace.

7. 1 John 2
15 - Do not love the world, nor what is in the world. If anyone loves the
world, the Father's love is not in him.
16 - For all that is in the world, the Desire of the flesh, the lust of the
eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but of the world.
17 - And the world passes away, and its lust; but he who does the will of
God remains forever.

8. • INTRODUCTION
On the journey of the Christian life we encounter dangers
that threaten the trajectory of our path to heaven. In it,
we will find three enemies who seek to hinder us: the
Devil, the flesh and the world. The Devil and the world
are on the outside of our trajectory; the flesh, however, is
on the inside: it is our sinful nature. Therefore, in this
lesson, we will study these three enemies of the Christian
Life Journey.
8
11. • I – THE CHRISTIAN’S FIRST ENEMY:
THE DEVIL
1. The Devil is real. The existence of the Devil as a
person is described from the first book of the Bible. In
the Old Testament, Satan's actions are described in
Genesis, 1 Chronicles, Job, Psalms, Isaiah, Ezekiel, and
Zechariah. The New Testament shows the Devil's actions
around 25 times out of the 29 passages in the Gospels in
which Jesus mentions him. In his ministry, our Lord
attests to the reality of Satan (Mt 13:39; Lk 11:18).
11
12. 2. The description of Satan. The Holy Scriptures describe Satan as a
spiritual being who belonged to an angelic order of cherubim, being the
most exalted of them (Ez 28.12,14). In Jude 9, because he belonged to a
high order, it is recorded that the Archangel Michael contended with
Satan regarding the body of Moses, but did not dare to pronounce curse
judgment against him. In fact, Satan is the chief of the fallen angels. He
has power, however, his actions are limited, but he is seen as the god of
this century, the prince of the power of the air (2 Cor 4.4; Eph 2.2). We
can also say that Satan is a being that has personality, that is, he has
intelligence (2 Cor 11.3), anger (Rev 12.17), desires (Luke 22.31) and his
own will (Is 14.13,14; 2 Tim 2.26). Our Lord considered Satan as a
person and, therefore, used personal pronouns to refer to him (Mt 4.1-
12; cf. Job 1.6-12; 2.1-4).
12
13. 3. The identity of the Enemy. We can know the Enemy
through the names that the Bible uses to describe him: Serpent,
refers to his sagacity and cunning (Gen 3.1; Rev 12.9); Satan,
mentioned 52 times, adversary or opposer (Zc 3.1; Mt 4.10; Rev
20.2); Devil, appears 35 times, accuser (Mt 4.1; Eph 4.27); Evil,
reveals his character (1 John 5.18,19); Red Dragon, reveals his
ferocity (Rev 12.3,7,9,10); Tempting, tempting action in the field
of lies and immorality (Acts 5.3; 1 Cor 7.5); Deceiver (Rev 12.9;
20.2,3); Beelzebub, chief of the demons (Luke 11:15); Belial, an
evil, worthless person (Jz 19:22; 1 Sam 30:22; 2 Cor 6:15). These
names reveal a cruel, perverse and destructive nature of our
Enemy.
13
14. The Christian's first enemy, the Devil, is
described in the Bible as a real being.
• SYNOPSIS I

15. 15
II – THE SECOND ENEMY OF
THE CHRISTIAN: THE
FLESH
16. 16
• II – THE SECOND ENEMY OF THE
CHRISTIAN: THE FLESH
1. Biblical concept of flesh. There are four definitions for the word
“flesh” in the Bible: 1) the muscular tissue of the human body and
animals (Gen 2.21); 2) the entire human body (Ex 4.7); 3) the human
being according to his fragility and mortality (Ps 78.39); 4) sinful human
nature (Gal 5.19; 6.8). Among many perspectives on the word flesh in
the Bible, the expression “Desire of the flesh” has great relevance (1
John 2:16). When the apostle John uses this term, he refers to carnal
satisfaction in all its dimensions: gluttony, sensuality, drunkenness, illicit
sexual relations. The expression reveals that there is no moral criterion
or norm in a context in which the search for individual pleasure dictates
the tendency. It is selfishness at a high level.
17. 17
2. The Flesh in the New Testament. From the perspective of
the New Testament, the Greek term sarx, that is, “flesh”, is a
direct reference to the entirety of sinful human nature, apart
from God, degraded, without the presence of the Holy Ghost.
In his letters, the apostle Paul highlights what a nature
dominated by the flesh can produce (Gal 5.19-21; Col 3.5,9).
The flesh opposes God and his purposes, as it intends to walk
independently of the Most High; her desire and will are outside
the divine plans, she makes human beings act as if they were
God himself.
18. 18
3. The doctrinal perspective on the word flesh. Doctrinally,
the “flesh” is human nature after the fall of Adam. As we have
seen, the expression “flesh” can be used to refer to the human
body (1 Cor 15:39), but also to the sinful nature (Rom 8:6). In
this sense, although the same word can have different meanings,
there is no reason to be confused between “flesh” as a body and
“flesh” as a sinful nature, since what is produced by the sinful
nature is therefore recognized; for example: idolatry is a work of
the flesh, that is, of sinful human nature (Gal 5.20).
19. The Christian's second enemy, the Flesh,
can refer to the body, but also to fallen
human nature.

• III – THE CHRISTIAN’S THIRD ENEMY:
THE WORLD
1. Biblical perspectives on the word “world”. There are five biblical
connotations for the word world: 1) the earth (Ps 24:1); 2) the set of
known nations (1 Rs 10.23); 3) the human race (Ps 9.8; John 3.16); 4) the
universe (Rm 1.20); 5) those who oppose God. These have the Devil as
their leader and live in impiety (John 12:31; 15:18). In general, the Bible
uses the word “world” to describe two great realities: a) the planet
Earth in which we live (Ps 19.4); b) people who live independently
of God. The passage from 1 John 2.15, when it says to “not love the
world”, the idea is that of a society separated from Christ and that
manifests itself contrary to God, as it is dominated by the most
infamous vices, and whose actions do not match the God's will. In the
epistle, these vices are classified into three levels: Desire of the flesh, lust
of the eyes and the pride of life.
22. 22
2. Three levels of infamous vices. The lusts of the flesh, the eyes and
the pride of life are levels of infamous vices that every Christian will
encounter on their journey:
a) The desire of the flesh. The Desire of the flesh has to do with
human nature completely dominated by sin, corrupted, fallen, every act
of the body for evil and immoral purposes.
b) The lust of the eyes. The lust of the eyes has to do with everything
that involves the mind and imagination. It creates the desire for the
sinful things offered by the media, music, movies, literature, art to give in
to carnal desires.
c) The pride of life. This level of addiction expresses man's self-
glorification in sin, denoting his selfishness, vainglory and atheism. It is
modern man despising the Creator in deliberate opposition.
23. 23
3. Conquering the world. There is a carnal system that acts
under the control of the Evil One, which seeks to remove us
from the path that leads to heaven through anti-Christian
ideologies, lifestyles that do not glorify God and ways that are
contrary to the values of the Gospel. To overcome these attacks
it is necessary to have a life filled with the Spirit (Eph 5.18). It is
also necessary to live fully in Christ Jesus, doing God's will (Mt
7.21). Therefore, we need to submit ourselves to Him, resist the
Devil, as we have the sublime promise: “he will flee from you”
(James 5:7).
24. The third enemy of the Christian, the World,
presents three levels of infamous vices: the desire of
the flesh, of the eyes and the pride of life.

• CONCLUSION
The apostle Peter warns us about the Enemy's plan to swallow
us up (1 Peter 5:8) with the aim of destroying the work carried
out by Christ in our lives. He wants to weaken our journey
towards heaven. The diabolical action is done through attacks
from the Enemy. So, in order not to give in to their wiles, we
need to constantly live under the presence of the Holy Ghost,
prepared and strengthened in God (Gal 5.16; Eph 6.10).
26. 1. What did the Lord Jesus attest to in his ministry?
In his ministry, our Lord attests to the reality of Satan (Mt
13:39; Lk 11:18).

Enemy in the Bible.
Serpent, adversary and Evil One.
3. What does the expression “Desire of the flesh” reveal?

norm in a context in which the search for individual
pleasure dictates the tendency. It is selfishness at a high
level.
