This document provides a summary of the life and teachings of the prophet Muhammad. It describes how Muhammad received divine visions in Mecca and began preaching a monotheistic message, which was offensive to Mecca's polytheistic pagans and an economic threat to the existing religious establishment. Muhammad then fled to Medina in 622 CE, establishing the Muslim calendar. He organized his followers into a communal society and conducted raids on Meccan caravans. After returning to Mecca, Muhammad established the Five Pillars of Islam and concepts of jihad, or struggle, which were later codified into Islamic law and sharia.
