Electrician with SJB Electrical Services June 2012 – April 2016
SJB is a small electrical firm based in Cambridge, serving both domestic customers and clients requiring
larger contracting work. SJB works at the heart of the local community, dealing with local clients of all sizes.
Having become a qualified NICEIC approved electrician with SJB, I am now in a senior position allowing
me to play an integral role within the company, keeping a close eye on the detail and specifications of each
job and making sure we are always offering the best and most up-to-date solutions possible to our customers.
I enjoy the diversity of the role, covering everything from new circuits and earth bonding packages to
extensions and conversions.
RJR Custom installations January 2012-May 2012
RJR is a small firm based in Cambridge that offers bespoke consultation, installation and commissioning of
multi-room AV, lighting and home automation systems to a wide variety of clients, both public and private,
throughout the UK.
Working with RJR gave me my first insight into the home entertainment market, fitting home cinemas, and
liaising closely with clients to offer a full design service which included 3D plans. With RJR I gained my
certification for Opus, an AV technology, allowing me to become a fully certified installer.
The role involved a great deal of travel, visiting clients all over the UK and was both an insightful and very
technical role.
Bury Town Free Press August 2011 – June 2012
Having been approached to write a column in the Bury Free Press when playing football for Bury FC, I
wrote a weekly article about life at Bury town and my views on the world of Football elsewhere.
Histon Football Club
July 2011 - 2013
3. When histon bought me from bury town i was an inexperienced semi pro footballer. By the end of my time
with them i had captained the side on several occasions and on the cusp of joining dagenham and redbridge
who at the time were in league 1 but fell through at the last hurdle. I feel this made me a stronger and more
determined person having to overcome a dream shattered.
Lowestoft Football Club
July 2013 – 2016
I continue to play for a semi-professional football team. Training is minimal (2 evenings per week and
weekends) which gives me the opportunity to focus my efforts on starting my career but yet having the
fulfilment of continuing to play semi-professional football and keeping me fit.
Sub-Contractor for Ollington Electrical Services
September 2010 to January 2011
Ollington Electrical is an electrical firm based in Newmarket, performing all types of electrical work.
Key responsibilities included:
Working alone on a project that contained five properties, each of which had to be finished to a tight
deadline
Communicating continuously with Project Managers regarding the specifications of the job, costs and
timescale provided for each section
Working with other trades so as to provide a smooth and easy working environment, where the most
challenging work and tasks get completed to the exact specification and timescales required
I was self-managed in this role, starting and finishing my working day as and when I wanted to and
completing the job as I felt was necessary. I taught myself self-discipline and self-motivation, and it forced
me to improve and push myself in a number of areas which made me a more complete worker.
Electrician with SJB Electrical Services (Apprentice) November 2006 – June 2010
This role began as an apprenticeship while studying at college, which then led to SJB Electrical Services
offering me the position of Trainee Apprentice once I had completed my college course. I enjoyed the
opportunity of putting what I was learning at college into practice day to day, and the challenges and the
constant problem solving that I was instantly faced with when walking into each job. I was required to be
proactive and use my initiative, dealing with challenging situations on a daily basis.
Key responsibilities included:
Learning on site and at college (one day a week for three years), which involved balancing study and work,
taking online and written exams both during and at the end of each term.
Ensuring each job was completed smoothly and efficiently for the client, with no hitches.
Communicating with customers to make sure they were fully aware of what the procedures would be before,
during and after completion of the job and informing them along the way of any changes – both financially
and practically - as and when they arose to ensure transparency and prevent confusion or discrepancy.
Bowater Zenith Ltd – Telesales January 2006 – June 2006
This was an interim job at college. My position within the company was to generate leads through telesales.
Despite this being a challenging role, I was driven by the results, and gave myself an objective to turn every
no into a yes where possible. I was very successful, and enjoyed seeing the benefits of my work each month
when I received my commission.
4. The role taught me resilience and gave me valuable experience in direct sales and cold calling.
