Guide To The 34 Themes

Strengths-Based leadership
Focuses on recognizing what you and your
team excel at, and delegating tasks to those
who are strong in areas where you are
weak. Strengths can be grouped into four
broad groups: executing, influencing,
relationship building, and strategic thinking.
In the 2009 book, "Strengths Based
Leadership: Great Leaders, Teams, and
Why People Follow," workplace
consultants Tom Rath and Barry Conchie
argue that the most successful teams
possess a broad range of abilities. When
you know each of your team members' key
strengths, you can apply them in a way
that benefits the team as a whole.

The StrengthsFinder® test, developed by the Gallup® organization
(famous for its Gallup® polls) first came into the public eye in 2001,
thanks to the publication of Now, Discover Your Strengths. The self-
help book was written by Marcus Buckingham and Donald Clifton,
who was the chairman of Gallup®.
Based on the notion that every person has certain strengths,
StrengthsFinder® has broken these strengths into 34 categories, or
themes. Each of the 34 strengths falls into one of four domains
(areas): Executing, Influencing, Relationship Building, and Strategic
Thinking.
The StrengthsFinder® test identifies a person’s top 5 strengths, and it
is based on “positive psychology,” or what is “right” about people, not
“wrong” with them.
In 2004, the name of the personality assessment was changed to
“Clifton StrengthsFinder®,” in order to pay tribute to Don Clifton, who
died in 2003.
Recently, the StrengthsFinder® name has been changed to
CliftonStrengths® assessment, but the actual test remains the same.

to take risks and manage their own lives. They
have an inner compass that gives them
certainty in their decisions.

Significance theme want to make a big impact.
They are independent and prioritize projects
based on how much influence they will have on
their organization or people around them.

the Restorative theme are adept
at dealing with problems.They
are good at figuring out what is
wrong and resolving it.
People exceptionally talented in
the Focus theme can take a
direction, follow through and
make the corrections necessary
to stay on track.They prioritize,
then act.
People exceptionally talented in
the Deliberative theme are best
described by the serious care they
take in making decisions or
choices. They anticipate
obstacles.
People exceptionally talented in
the Belief theme have certain
core values that are unchanging.
Out of these values emerges a
defined purpose for their lives.
People exceptionally talented in
the Responsibility theme take
psychological ownership of what
they say they will do.They are
committed to stable values such
as honesty and loyalty.
People exceptionally talented in
the Discipline theme enjoy
routine and structure.Their world
is best described by the order
they create.
People exceptionally talented in
the Consistency theme are keenly
aware of the need to treat people
the same. They crave stable
routines and clear rules and
procedures that everyone can
follow.

People exceptionally talented in the
Relator theme enjoy close relationships
with others. They find deep satisfaction
in working hard with friends to achieve
a goal.

the Harmony theme look for

conflict; rather, they seek areas of

Developer theme recognize and
cultivate the potential in others.They
spot the signs of each small
improvement and derive satisfaction
from evidence of progress.
People exceptionally talented in
the Positivity theme have
contagious enthusiasm. They are
upbeat and can get others excited
about what they are going to do.

the Includer theme accept others.
They show awareness of those
who feel left out and make an
effort to include them.

the Empathy theme can sense
other people's feelings by
imagining themselves in others'
lives or situations.

KEY POINTS
Strengths-based leadership focuses on recognizing what you and your
team excel at, and delegating tasks to those who are strong in areas
where you are weak.
Strengths can be grouped into four broad groups: executing, influencing,
relationship building, and strategic thinking.
A strengths-based leadership approach can improve your delegation
skills, increase team diversity, and create a more consensual leadership
style.
However, be careful not to ignore your team members' weaknesses. If
left unchecked, they can undermine an otherwise cohesive team.

The StrengthsFinder® test, developed by the Gallup® organization (famous for its Gallup® polls) first came into the public eye in 2001, thanks to the publication of Now, Discover Your Strengths. The self- help book was written by Marcus Buckingham and Donald Clifton, who was the chairman of Gallup®. Based on the notion that every person has certain strengths, StrengthsFinder® has broken these strengths into 34 categories, or themes. Each of the 34 strengths falls into one of four domains (areas): Executing, Influencing, Relationship Building, and Strategic Thinking. The StrengthsFinder® test identifies a person’s top 5 strengths, and it is based on “positive psychology,” or what is “right” about people, not “wrong” with them. In 2004, the name of the personality assessment was changed to “Clifton StrengthsFinder®,” in order to pay tribute to Don Clifton, who died in 2003.
