ABOUT PARAGRAPHSParagraphs contain THREE BASIC COMPONENTS.docxbartholomeocoombs
ABOUT PARAGRAPHS:
Paragraphs contain THREE BASIC COMPONENTS
1. TOPIC SENTENCE or CLAIM
2. CONCRETE DETAIL or DATA
3. COMMENTARY or WARRANT
TOPIC SENTENCE [TPS aka the "CLAIM"]
Usually, the first sentence in a BODY PARAGRAPH. It should introduce the topic of the paragraph and relate directly back to the THESIS. (or, in a longer essay, relate it directly back to the TPS of the preceding paragraph.) Imagine someone asking you, "How do you want me to think about your topic now?"
CONCRETE DETAIL [CD aka the "DATA"]:
This is the specific information you offer as the EVIDENCE for your topic; it will be the core of your paragraph. Imagine someone asking you, "Can you show me what you mean?" Other names for CONCRETE DETAIL: illustrations, examples, descriptions, quotations, paraphrasing, plot evidence.
During DRAFTING you may rely upon PHRASES like "FOR EXAMPLE" to introduce CONCRETE DETAIL--this is the kind of thing to eliminate during REVISION
In the literature essay, CD is often a DIRECT QUOTATION.
COMMENTARY [CM aka the "WARRANT"]:
This is your explanation for offering the concrete detail you select--that is, your comment on, discussion about, or evaluation of the evidence (CD) offered. Imagine someone asking you, "What exactly does your concrete detail prove?" You want to suggest how your CD is both relevant and unique. Other names for COMMENTARY include: insight, analysis, interpretation, evaluation, response, explication, reflection.
A hint for getting started on COMMENTARY: begin with the phrase : THIS SHOWS THAT . . . This is the kind of thing to eliminate during REVISION
Once you understand the different components of a paragraph, you can choose to MOVE BEYOND THE TEMPLATE. Some students depart from the FORMAT, some never do.
This whole discussion is based on Toulmin's Model . Here's a little bit more about it.
The model is a six-step system of argument:
(1) a CLAIM is made;
(2) DATA (also called "GROUNDS"), i.e., facts to support it, are offered;
(3) a WARRANT for connecting the data/grounds to the claim is conveyed
In addition, Toulmin adds
(4) BACKING, the theoretical or experimental foundations for the warrant, is shown (at least implicitly);
(5) appropriate MODAL QUALIFIERS (some, many, most, etc.) temper the claim; and
(6) possible REBUTTALS are considered.
But, for now, let us focus on the first three (and add a concluding sentence.
Claim
A claim is a statement that you are asking the other person to accept. This includes information you are asking them to accept as true (exposition) or actions you want them to accept and enact (persuasion).
Many people start with a claim, but then find that it is challenged. If you just ask me to do something, I will not simply agree with what you want. I will ask why I should agree with you. I will ask you to prove you claim. This is where grounds of data become important.
Data
Data is the basis of real persuasion and is made up of information and hard fact.

Hello everyone.
These are the current events I chose. I believe both of them tie directly to things we have covered in the last two weeks.
Five Handguns Caught at Baltimore/Washington Checkpoints in June
So far this has brought the total for this year to just one less that the total for all of 2020. In each instance TSA found the guns using x-rays for carry-on bags during passenger check in. This ties to the course so far because TSA was created for homeland security, and this is an example of the work they do.
White House urges mayors to meet with state cybersecurity officials on ransomware.
The White House is asking for Mayors to be more proactive with their cybersecurity measures in light of all the recent ransomware attacks. This is tied to this course so far because we have covered homeland security policies, and even spent some time coming up with changes we would suggest to help. This article pushes that further by acknowledging that it is an ongoing issue that we must all stay on top of.

The McDonald’s Corporation sustained a data breach when it was discovered that unauthorized activity was being performed on an internal server from outside sources (Haddon, 2021). The crime affected some data from the U.S., South Korea, and Taiwan operations. Employee and customer personal information was compromised, but no financial data was compromised. I use this is as an example of a cybercrime being committed to a U.S. based company with International operations. This type of crime demonstrates the importance of cyber-protection within the private sector on their internal networks as referenced in our textbook (Bullock, et al., 2018).

Unit 2 [BU224: Microeconomics]
PC-4.1: Assess the value of multiculturalism and diversity in a global environment.
v.6.16.171 of 4
Assignment
An effective understanding of economics forms the foundation of every manager’s, entrepreneur’s, bureaucrats, and leader’s ability to analyze business situations and to develop an appropriate response. The globalization of business is a fact of life for all business professionals. One of the most contentious issues in today’s global business world is the issue of closing local manufacturing facilities, laying off those American workers, and re-opening the same manufacturing facility in an Asian, or other third world country.
Look in your own closet at the clothes you have purchased. Pick any 10 items of clothing and look at the labels in those clothes. Where were they manufactured? How many of the 10 items were manufactured here in America? If that same exercise had been done 50 years ago, (approximately the 1970s), all the clothes you owned would have been manufactured in textile mills in the Southeastern United States (Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, etc.). All those Southeastern textile mills are now closed, and people buy foreign made clothes. If you were able to go further back in time to 150 years ago (1870s), the clothes you owned would have been manufactured in textile mills in the Northeast United States (Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, etc.). Yet, by the early to mid-1950s, those Northeastern textile mills were closed and their workers were out of a job. The mills had all relocated to the Southeast during the years following the Civil War.
Many people say that we should ban the import of these foreign made clothes, so that more workers in American clothing textile mills could have jobs. Others say that we should continue to import clothing because imported clothing is relatively less expensive and more people can afford to buy more clothes at these low prices. Still others say that we should put an import tariff (an extra tax that would be paid when we buy these imported clothes), making the price of imported clothing comparable to the price of clothing made in the U.S., and, therefore, encouraging American consumers to buy American-made clothing.
Questions
Before answering the following questions, review the Assignment Checklist. Then, in a separate Word document, answer the following questions in a 3–4 page expository research paper:
1. Considering what you have learned about “comparative advantage” and relative “marginal opportunity costs,” discuss the advantages and disadvantages to all involved parties (American workers, American consumers, foreign workers, and foreign consumers) of.
You are to select a multinational corporation - examples include P.docxkenjordan97598
You are to select a multinational corporation - examples include P&G, GE and Lexis-Nexis, which are all local companies within driving distance. Of course, you can also select some other companies to your interest, such as Dow Chemical, McDonalds, Merck, etc. Then you will focus on that company in one overseas country/market. They may or may not already be doing business in that country.
Conduct research by reading their website, their annual report (for international aspects), or other research you can locate. You are to identify your sources of information in the form of a bibliography. The paper should be no more than 15 pages, double spaced. Your grade will be based on content and organization of thought, ideas, and structure.
Some of the course assignments are related to this final paper requirement. Therefore, it is OK to draw from the materials you submitted before - the course is designed this way, so you will not be overwhelmed towards the end of the semester. However, your write-up for this final paper is to be cohesive (rather than simply “copy and paste” from your previous assignments). You are to demonstrate your progress of assimilating and synthesizing information through the semester.
Please incorporate the following in your discussion:

c. SWOT analysis
d. Country selection
i. Market size and growth

3. Current event research. With Trump’s presidency, America has entered a new era regarding how to survive, compete and blossom amidst the reality of globalization. Which of Trump’s new policies is going to impact your selected company? How does his protectionism benefit or hurt your selected market/country? Is his policy going to deliver the result that he has promised? Include your latest research and integrate some of your peers’ insights from our Canvas discussions into your paper to make it a more timely report.
4. Your overall evaluation of their strategies. What suggestions might you make to improve the company’s global expansion with new products or services? If you disagree with some of their strategies, please discuss in more detail. Also, incorporate what you would do differently

The document discusses how to create an effective outline for an essay. It explains that an outline is like drawing plans to build a house, as it establishes the overall structure and organization. The benefits of outlining include increased organization and time savings. An example outline structure is provided, including sections for the introduction, body paragraphs with topic sentences, and conclusion. Guidance is offered on developing thesis statements, topic sentences, and supporting details to flesh out the outline.
The document compares and contrasts ancient Rome and Christianity. While Rome's religion was based on gods and goddesses, Christianity's religion was based on Jesus and his crucifixion. Rome's religion began earlier and initially persecuted Christianity. However, both religions addressed purposes, virtues, and views of destiny, though in different ways according to their distinct beliefs.

The document discusses two influential historical figures, Jesus and Socrates. Both had many followers who were interested in their teachings, though others disagreed with them. While they both had leadership qualities and lived according to their beliefs, their endings were quite different - Socrates died peacefully from hemlock poisoning, while Jesus was tortured and crucified.
This document provides guidance on writing the introduction and background sections of a research paper. It discusses the key components of an effective introduction, including introducing the topic, providing a brief background, and stating the research questions. It then outlines a format for writing the introduction, with the opening paragraph introducing the topic and previous research, identifying a gap, stating the aim of the study, and outlining the approach. The document also discusses how to write an effective background section, including reviewing previous relevant studies to provide context and a foundation for the current research.
This document provides guidance on writing effective introductions for essays. It discusses including definitions of key terms, background information, references to other writers, the importance of the topic, any limitations of scope, and an outline of how the main points will be organized. For a short exam essay, the introduction should cover these elements in this order: 1) definitions, 2) background, 3) purpose and importance, 4) limitations, 5) outline of main points. Sample text is provided for each element.
This document provides guidance on answering a question about long-form television dramas (LFTVD). It breaks down the structure of the question and how to plan a response. The first bullet point always asks about considering the social, cultural, historical and economic contexts of LFTVD production and consumption. The question will then focus on either media language/genre or representation in the two chosen texts. Responses should compare the texts, analyzing similarities and differences. Outlines are provided for introducing context, using evidence from the texts in PETAL paragraphs, and concluding by directly answering the original question.

Documentary Research Paper
Documentary. Articles. Controversy
Introduction:
Nonfiction, visual culture, media, graphic, and argument---these elements of reading and writing converge in documentary film, making it an ideal way to understand how we create and receive arguments. What, after all, is a documentary except someone’s argument on a topic? Documentaries suggest that the audience (you) should accept the viewpoint, take the action, make commitment, understand the rightness/wrongness of this policy, etc. To achieve this purpose, the filmmaker (director) must understand the audience and appeal to them---ex, using the rhetorical appeals (ethos, pathos, logos). All in all, documentaries build upon the visual world while focusing controversial and overlooked issues in your lives. Your research will culminate in a 3-4 page research paper and visual presentation.
Expectation:
In this research paper, you will use the arguments made in one documentary and 3 -4 additional texts to answer your own research question (at least 4 total annotated bibliographies).
Writing Prompt:

Globalization has increased connectivity between countries but may not reduce inequality within poorer nations. While trade theory predicts inequality will fall as developing countries enter global markets, many have actually seen inequality rise. This is because multinational companies in poorer countries often employ skilled labor, raising their wages, but unskilled workers do not receive the same opportunities and productivity gains. New theories suggest globalization can boost wages for skilled workers but limit wages for unskilled labor, increasing inequality. Despite allowing closer economic ties, globalization has also been linked to growing inequality in some developing nations.
(1) a CLAIM is made;
(2) DATA (also called "GROUNDS"), i.e., facts to support it, are offered;
(3) a WARRANT for connecting the data/grounds to the claim is conveyed
In addition, Toulmin adds
(4) BACKING, the theoretical or experimental foundations for the warrant, is shown (at least implicitly);

1. Organization and product/service analysis
a. Description of the organization
b. Product or services “needs assessment” of the chosen overseas market/country
c. Description of the company’s products or services to meet the need

b. Compare and contrast the advantages/disadvantages of various modes of entry into the global markets
c. SWOT analysis
d. Country selection
i. Market size and growth
ii. Barriers to entry
iii. Previous experience in countries and timing

Final Report Assignment
1
Purpose: This report will be your final assignment for the class. The weekly class
assignments are designed to prepare you to successfully create this document. In
that way, this assignment asks you to synthesize all of your learning and
demonstrate your mastery of the following course learning outcomes:
Locate, evaluate, and integrate credible research into a written document for
a specific purpose and work-world audience;
Apply appropriate formatting and visual aids for a specific purpose and
work-world audience; ...
This document outlines the requirements for a final feasibility report assignment for an English course. Students must research and analyze the viability of investing in an emerging technical process or product. The report must be at least 5 pages and include 5 credible sources as well as 4 visuals, 2 of which must be original. It must follow an outline that covers the history, explanation, impact, and future of the topic as well as a recommendation. The goal is for students to demonstrate skills in research, formatting, and clear communication for a business audience.
Essay On Entertainers Are Paid Too Much. Online assignment writing service.Jenny Gomez

What is the controversy addressed in your documentary? What problem does the documentary address? What is your stance on the controversy or solution to the problem?
Research Requirements (3-4 pages):
Types of sources:
This includes:

significant internal corporate events/external global events and company financial
performance. Deliverables in this section include:
1) Two relevant ar.

LAND USE LAND COVER AND NDVI OF MIRZAPUR DISTRICT, UPRAHUL
This Dissertation explores the particular circumstances of Mirzapur, a region located in the
core of India. Mirzapur, with its varied terrains and abundant biodiversity, offers an optimal
environment for investigating the changes in vegetation cover dynamics. Our study utilizes
advanced technologies such as GIS (Geographic Information Systems) and Remote sensing to
analyze the transformations that have taken place over the course of a decade.
The complex relationship between human activities and the environment has been the focus
of extensive research and worry. As the global community grapples with swift urbanization,
population expansion, and economic progress, the effects on natural ecosystems are becoming
more evident. A crucial element of this impact is the alteration of vegetation cover, which plays a
significant role in maintaining the ecological equilibrium of our planet.Land serves as the foundation for all human activities and provides the necessary materials for
these activities. As the most crucial natural resource, its utilization by humans results in different
'Land uses,' which are determined by both human activities and the physical characteristics of the
land.
The utilization of land is impacted by human needs and environmental factors. In countries
like India, rapid population growth and the emphasis on extensive resource exploitation can lead
to significant land degradation, adversely affecting the region's land cover.
Therefore, human intervention has significantly influenced land use patterns over many
centuries, evolving its structure over time and space. In the present era, these changes have
accelerated due to factors such as agriculture and urbanization. Information regarding land use and
cover is essential for various planning and management tasks related to the Earth's surface,
providing crucial environmental data for scientific, resource management, policy purposes, and
diverse human activities.
Accurate understanding of land use and cover is imperative for the development planning
of any area. Consequently, a wide range of professionals, including earth system scientists, land
and water managers, and urban planners, are interested in obtaining data on land use and cover
changes, conversion trends, and other related patterns. The spatial dimensions of land use and
cover support policymakers and scientists in making well-informed decisions, as alterations in
these patterns indicate shifts in economic and social conditions. Monitoring such changes with the
help of Advanced technologies like Remote Sensing and Geographic Information Systems is
crucial for coordinated efforts across different administrative levels. Advanced technologies like
Remote Sensing and Geographic Information Systems

Changes in vegetation cover refer to variations in the distribution, composition, and overall
structure of plant communities across different temporal and spatial scales. These changes can
occur natural.

Lecture reading comprehension1
1.
2. The Reading Comprehension questions test
your ability to analyze written information and
include passages from the humanities, the
social sciences, and the physical and biological
sciences. Many of the questions maybe based
on what is IMPLIED in the passages, rather than
on what is explicitly stated. Your ability to draw
inferences from the material is critical to
successfully completing this section. You are to
select the best answer from five alternatives.
3. Reading comprehension questions usually fall into
several categories. In most questions, you will be
asked about one of the following:
4. In this type of question you may be asked about the
main idea or theme of the passage, about a possible
title, or about the author’s primary objective. Usually
the main idea refers to the passage as whole, not to
some segment or part of the passage. The main idea
typically (but not always) found in the first paragraph. It
will be a statement that gives the overall theme of the
passage. In many cases, it will be in the form of an
argument, including the premise and conclusion.
A frequent question on Reading Comprehension tests
asks you to select the title or theme that best
summarizes the passage.

17. Government policy in Frieland has traditionally
favored foreign investment. Leaders of all political
parties have been virtually unanimous in their belief
that foreign investment in Frieland would contribute to
speeding that country’s economic development, a
major priority of both the ruling coalition and
opposition parties. Of special interest to the
government were those industries that exported a
significant share of their total output. Since Frieland
had a relatively small population, there was a limit to
the amount of goods that could be produced for the
local market. Also the government did not want to
encourage foreign investors to compete with local
industry, even though new industries might alleviate
the already high unemployment rate.
18. 1.The best possible title of the
passage is
(A) Government Policy in Frieland.
(B) How to Provide Employment.
(C) Attracting Foreign Investment.
(D) The Economics of Developing
Countries.
(E) Foreign Investment and Economic
Development.
19. All of the above alternatives can be
found in the passage, with the
exception of (D) – we don’t know
Frieland is a developing country.
However, note that the word’s
“foreign investment” are mentioned
three times in the passage, and in line
5-6 it is linked with economic
development. Clearly then, the main
idea or subject is foreign investment,
20. 2. It can be concluded that the main idea of the
author is
(A) Increase foreign investment
(B) Protect local industry from foreign
competition
(C) Increase unemployment benefits for workers
(D) Develop a theory of foreign investment
(E) Increase the indigenous population of
Frieland
21. The most appropriate answer
to the above question id (A).
The author gives some of the
reasons and under what
conditions foreign investment
would be beneficial to Frieland
22. 3 types of questions
◦Social Science
◦Science
◦Business
Three most common questions
◦What is the primary purpose of
this passage?
◦What is the author’s tone?
◦Which choice given best
describes the structure of the
passage?
23. Read for main ideas
Watch for trigger words (however, but) which
signal a change in direction of passage
Use line numbers & lead words as guides
Take notes
Use Process of Elimination
◦ Read quickly to understand main idea
◦ Watch out for “always, must, all, never, complete”
◦ Quickly eliminate obviously incorrect answers
24. Supporting Ideas
In this type of question, you may be asked
about the idea expressed in one part of the
passage, rather than the passage as a
whole. Questions of this type test your
ability to distinguish between the main
idea and those themes that support it,
some of which may be implicit or implied
rather than explicitly stated.
25. The main idea in this passage is that the
United States may be utilized as land bridge
for the shipment of containerized cargo
between Europe and the Far East. This is
evidenced by the first sentence in the passage.
Supporting ideas would include any facts or
arguments that buttress the main idea. A
number of these may be found in the passage:
1. The opening of a new market (paragraph 2)
2. Obtaining new business (paragraph 3)
3. Creating labor requirements (paragraph 4)
26. 1. According to the passage, if a land-bridge
system were feasible, it would
(A) create employment in the bridge-building
industry
(B) Decrease the amount of air freight
(C) Make American railroads more efficient
(D) Increase foreign trade
27. The answer to question 1 is alternative (C),
which refers to supporting idea (1) listed
above and summarized in paragraph 2 of the
passage. A land bridge would create a new
market for U.S. steamship lines and railroads.
and sailors, but not for dock workers.
28. 2. The author implies that which of the
following would be provided employment by
the development of a land-bridge?
I. Dock workers
II. U.S. railway workers
III. U.S. sailors
(A) I only (C)II and III only
(B) III only (D) I, II and III
(C) I and II only
29. Question 2 is developed from
an idea implied in the
passage. Answer choice (D) is
correct, because, in paragraph
4, it is argued that the new
jobs will be created for U.S.
railway workers and sailors,
but not for dock workers.
30. Drawing Inferences
Questions of this sort ask about
ideas that are not explicitly stated in
a passage. These questions refer to
meanings implied by the author
based on information given in this
passage. Typical questions are:
1. The author feel (believes) that …
2. In reference to (event) it may be

49. Specific Details
In this type of question you may
be asked about specific facts or
details the author has stated
explicitly in the passage. This
sort of question may take the
following forms:
50. Refer to the land bridge passage
1. According to the passage, the major
alternative to a U.S. land bridge is the
(A) Panama Canal
(B) Suez Canal
(C) Air-freight system
(D) All-land route
(E) Military transport system
51. Refer to the land bridge passage
3. A land bridge would not
(A) Aid U.S. steamship lines
(B) handle goods shipped between Europe and the
Far East
(C) create new jobs for dock workers
(D) supply new business for U.S. railroads
(E) create business for unscheduled shipping lines
52. The answer to specific
detail questions may
always be found in the
passage. These questions
do not deal with
implications or inferences.
53. Applying Information from the Passage to Other
Information
These questions ask you to make an analogy
between a situation described in the passage and a
similar situation or event listed in the question.
Unlike other types of questions, these describe
situations not given in the passage, but rather
those that are analogous to those in the passage. In
order to answer a question of this kind, you must
be able to draw a parallel between the situation in
the question and its counterpart in the passage.
54. The Danes are widely renowned for their
business orientation, which is reflected in their
export promotion policies. Without any raw
materials of their own, except for agricultural
produce, the Danes obtained a third of their
GNP from their export trade. This magnitude
has been achieved only through a thorough
exploitation of export potential and the
implementation of a wide range of promotional
activities. The latter emphasize the practical
rather than the theoretical, and actual business
encounters rather than such indirect, and
previously popular, means as cultural events
and Danish weeks.
55. 1. Which of the following countries should
succeed in exporting?
(A) Countries without domestic raw materials
(B) Countries with a growing GNP
(C) Countries with a practical approach to
business
(D) Countries with a thoroughly produced and
diverse promotional campaign
(E) Countries with some export potential based
on a wide range of products
56. This question asks us to project the Danish
experience to similar events in other countries.
The analogy, of course is “what helped the Danes
to export will help other countries as well.” and
what helped the Danes in this case was the
“implementation of a wide range of promotional
activities.” the correct answer is (D). Note that you
were not asked to comment in the validity of the
analogy, but only to identify the parallel case.
57. Tone or Attitude of the passage
These questions concentrate on the
author’s style, attitude, or mood. In
order to determine this attitude, look
for key words, such as adjectives that
reveal of the author is “pessimistic”,
“critical,” “supportive,” or “objective”
about an event, idea, or situation in
the passage.
58.
59. TONE
refers to the feelings or
emotions expressed by the
author towards an issue. It
could also encompass his
style of writing.
62. Passages dealing with
events in history: giving
details of some battle,
dates, information about
the rule of some
civilization, king etc
63. Passages dealing with
some technology:
providing details about
some gadget, describing
the features of some
instrument etc
64. Information about some
building, landmark, historical
place etc. For example, the
passage may describe the
Intramuros, giving information
about when it was built, who
built it, the material used for its
construction etc.
65.
66. An expert giving his verdict on
some issue-could be an automobile
expert speaking about a car and
providing his opinion on what is
good or bad about the new vehicle,
or a connoisseur of food providing
his opinion about a dish, for
example
67. A follower or fan
speaking about an issue
close to his heart. For
example, someone
writing about a
particular player
68.
69. An author stating that
he feels something could
happen in the future and
providing reasons to
justify why he feels in
that manner
70. An analysis of some event in
the past-reasons given to
explain a certain event,
action etc. For example, the
author could analyze why
India won the last cricket
match etc.
72. Passages in which the pros
and cons of a certain action
are weighed. For example,
should Company A acquire
Company B? The decision
needs to be analyzed and
reasons given both for and
against the issue
83. Often a change or shift in tone will be
signaled by the following:
Key words such as but, yet, nevertheless,
however, although
Punctuation such as dashes, periods, colons,
semicolons
Stanza and paragraph divisions
Changes in line and stanza or sentence
length
84. Tone or Attitude of the passage
Typical questions are:
1. For what audience is the passage
intended?
2. The passage indicates that the
author expresses a feeling of
(A)Hope
(B)Confidence
(C) Enthusiasm
(D) Instability
(E) Pleasure
85. Tone or Attitude of the passage
Typical questions are:
3. It can be concluded that the author of the
passage is
(A) Sympathetic to John Doe’s ideas
(B) Uncritical of John Doe’s interpretation of
history
(C) Politically conservative
(D) A believer in mysticism
(E) A political diletante
86. Technique Used by the Author in the Passage
A reader can detect certain techniques used by
the authors, depending on the subject matter of
the material.
If the subject matter of the passage is from the social
studies, authors tend to
make comparisons (“The ABC company uses a
production process that can be likened to …”)
describe cause and effect relationships (“The
development of the harbor can be attributed to …”)
opinionate or reason (“The author belongs to which of
the following schools of thought.”)
87. Technique Used by the Author in the Passage
If the subject matter is from sciences, writers
deal with
problem solving (“Serious unemployment leads labor
groups to demand …”)
cause and effect (“Government investments in industry
should result in …”)
classification of things and events (“According to the
passage, the waves occurs most frequently in the area
of …”)
experimentation (“Given present wave tracking
systems, scientists can forecast all of the following
except.”)
88. Technique Used by the Author in the Passage
If the subject matter is literature, authors tend to
create moods (“Which of the following best
describes the author’s tone in the passage?”)
narrate events (“The author’s treatment of the
topic can be best described as …”)
describe settings and characters (“The main
character is a person attempting to …”)
89. The Logical Structure of the Passage
These types of questions test your
understanding of the overall meaning, logic, or
organization of a passage. You may be asked
how several ideas in a passage are interrelated
or how a passage is constructed, classifies,
compares, describes events, or situations. You
may be asked about the strengths or
weaknesses of the argument the author is
making, to identify assumptions, or to evaluate
counterarguments.
90. Typical questions are:
1. John Doe’s judgment that he failed was
based on assumption. Which of the following
could have served as that assumption?
2. Which of the following, if true, weaken the
above argument?
3. If the statement in the passage is true, which
if the following must also be true?
4. Which of the following conclusions can be
drawn from the passage?
91. Determining the Meaning of Words
from the Context
When a question asks for the
meaning of the word, it can usually
be deduced from the context of the
passage. Remember, you are not
required to know the meaning of the
technical or foreign words.
92. During the 1980 campaign to clean the streets of
undesirable and criminal elements, a force of 10,000
special police was used to maintain order. Nevertheless,
many of the hunted crime figures fought back with live
weapons and the streets looked like a battlefield.
Almost as many policemen were injured as criminals.
This year’s aktion will have to be better planned.
1. The planned aktion ca be described as a
(A) Police offensive
(B) Political campaign
(C) Battle
(D) Law and order
(E) None of the above
93. The passage tells us that this year’s aktion
will have to be planned better. From this, we
know that it is being compared to something
that happened before, which in the passage

94. 1. Read the question first, then the passage. Reading the
question first enables you to identify the question type. However,
do not read the answer alternatives at this time. If you are familiar
with the question type, such as identifying a main idea or drawing
inferences, you know what to look for in the passage. After you
the question type, carefully read the passage.
Read as quickly as you can, but not in haste. Each Reading
Comprehension passage contains 500 words, so even if you read
at a medium rate of 300 words a minute, you will read the
passages in approximately 2 minutes, leaving 23 minutes for
answering the questions, or approximately 1.5 minutes per
question.
95. If the question asks you to identify the main idea,
remember that often it will be found in the opening
sentences or in the summary part of the passage. In
order to identify the main idea, first determine the
object, person, or thing that is the subject of the
passage. Ask yourself: “What is the main point the
author is making?”
2. Read all the answer alternatives. Read all the
answer choices. Never assume you have found the
correct answer until you have considered all the
alternatives. Choose the best possible answer on the
basis of what is written in the passage and not on
your own knowledge from other sources.
96. 3. Learn to identify the major question types.
Before taking a Reading Comprehension test, make
sure that you are thoroughly familiar with the major
question types. This will save you time on the test
and increase your effectiveness in choosing the
correct answer. Time will be saved because you will
know in advance what to look for and how to read
the passage. You will be more effective because you
will immediately know what reading tactic to apply.
To become familiar with the various question types
be sure to read the “Major Types for Reading
Comprehension Questions” earlier.
97. You should base your answers to the questions solely
on what is stated or implied in the passages.
Read the italicized introductory text.
Skip questions you don't know. Return to them after
answering other easier questions.
First and last sentences of each paragraph are critical.
Find the right spot in a passage by using any line
reference numbers that appear in the questions.
Answer questions on familiar topics before unfamiliar
topics.
Read the passages before reading the questions.
Don't waste time memorizing details.
