This document provides an overview of topics to be covered in an environmental science course, including natural resources, sustainability, population increase, carrying capacity, ecological footprint, and the IPAT model. Key concepts are discussed such as the central role of sustainability to environmental science studies. Impacts of food production, transportation, home energy use, and overall resource consumption on the environment are examined. The IPAT model is introduced as a framework for analyzing the impact of population size, affluence, and technology on environmental effects. Students will complete a short presentation on two categories of natural resources, comparing their historical, present, and future uses, and how they are interrelated.

• The Ecological Footprint is a
resource accounting tool that
measures how much biologically
productive land and sea is used
by a given population or activity,
and compares this to how much
land and sea is available.
• The Ecological Footprint
measures the sum of these
areas, wherever they physically
occur on the planet.

Three major factors considered:
- Population size (P),
- Affluence (A) or resource consumption per person
- Effects of technologies (T) (destructive or beneficial)
Impact (I) = Population (P) x Affluence (A) x Technology (T)

• Overview: Choose two categories of natural resources (i.e., plants, animals, soil, minerals,
air, water, or energy sources).
• Then conduct your own research of primary literature (peer-reviewed work from
sources, especially discipline-specific journals) and, in a short overview presentation:
• 1. Define the two categories of natural resources
• 2. Compare and contrast their use (historical, present, and future potential)
• 3. Discuss how the two categories are interrelated
• 4. List your resources, with a minimum of two sources within your work, using APA in-
text format as well an APA-formatted reference slide at the end of the presentation
