country accounting for 55% of total
leather goods exported from India.
Finished products from the State are
unique and have a global appeal and
sizeable market. The State specialises
in production of handbags, wallets,
belts, key holders, leather garments,
finished leather, leather furniture and
leather manufacturing machines,
which has high demand in domestic
and international market. The Calcutta
Leather Complex is one of its kinds
in the country having state of the art

Strengths
•	The State is a leading manufacturer of value added
leather products, sourced by international brands
like Couch, Debenhams, House of Frazers, Mark &
Spencer, Gucci etc to name a few.
•	The State specialises in production of handbags,
wallets, belts, key holders, leather garments, finished
leather, leather furniture and leather manufacturing
machines.
•	Over 7 lakh skilled craftsperson employed in leather
industry
•	Availability of best quality raw materials due to
presence of modernised slaughter houses is a major
boost for the leather industry in the State.
•	 Integrated Leather Complex including tannery zone
operational
Challenges
•	Creation of necessary infrastructure in the Leather
Park
•	Contemporary Global Design are not available, causing
loss of competitive edge in export market
Accelerators and Road Map
•	Up-gradation of the existing and creation of new
modern infrastructure in the Calcutta Leather Complex
(CLC)- completion of pending agenda by 2016
•	Leather Goods Park by 2016
•	Product diversification with focus on footwear segment
– Footwear Park by 2017
•	Increased productivity and marketing through 5 Mega
Clusters
•	Skill Development for craftsmanship, cleaner and safer
technology in collaboration with the industry
•	Upgraded quality of raw materials
•	Increased productivity and marketing through
collaboration with knowledge partners
•	Design Studio for international/contemporary design
with focus on export
•	Branding support for the state made products
•	Fast, time bound and streamlined statutory clearances
facilities including design studio and tanning training
