The document discusses the need for changes in education to better prepare students for the future. It argues that education needs to shift from simply feeding students knowledge to teaching them how to learn new skills and think creatively. Students should feel empowered in their learning and see the value in their work. Technology offers opportunities for personalized learning but also faces challenges around access, support, and resistance to change. Overall, collaboration and a growth mindset are important for learning, as innovations often emerge from groups working together rather than individuals.
The Education Game - Using Gamification in the Classroom
Modern Classroom Education faces many unprecedented challenges and opportunities as a result of rapid developments in digital communication technologies since the birth of the Internet in the early 1990s. Since that time, the generation of students known as "Digital Natives" have been born into a world where desktop and home computers are commonplace, video games are available in homes as well as arcades and mobile phones are becoming ubquitous. As a consequence, for the first time in history, children have access to electronic devices which they can explore and interact with, sharing their experiences and problems with their peers.
This paper examines the impact of digital technologies on teaching roles and practices in the classroom and illustrates how the concept of "Gamification" can provide a modern day solution to traditional teaching best practices.

2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

Operation “Blue Star” is the only event in the history of Independent India where the state went into war with its own people. Even after about 40 years it is not clear if it was culmination of states anger over people of the region, a political game of power or start of dictatorial chapter in the democratic setup.
The people of Punjab felt alienated from main stream due to denial of their just demands during a long democratic struggle since independence. As it happen all over the word, it led to militant struggle with great loss of lives of military, police and civilian personnel. Killing of Indira Gandhi and massacre of innocent Sikhs in Delhi and other India cities was also associated with this movement.
A Strategic Approach: GenAI in EducationPeter Windle
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.

CHANGE IS NECESSARY
NEVER BECOME FIXATED
The problem with education is that we have allowed ourselves to become
fixated on the past. We have had success with the way we have educated
our students in the past, so it should continue to work, right? Wrong! The
world has
changed. We no
longer need to
create a work
force that has a
basic knowledge
of everything. We
need people to
think creatively,
solve problems,
invent new things
and most of all,
we need people who can learn new things. Education needs to change
allowing students to find what they are passionate about and help them
foster that passion to create a new work force who is able to change the
world. Never in our history have we had knowledge at our fingertips,
where we could find any answer at anytime. Our job is no longer to feed
knowledge, but to show students how to find the answers they are
looking for. We no longer need a workforce that has basic skills that help

them acquire a job that anyone can fill. We need innovators and people
who are able to think on their feet and jump into action.
I believe in creating students that feel that they have the
opportunity to have a voice in the learning community. The educator
should have key beliefs. My
beliefs are based from Stuart
Jr. (2019) where the student
should be able to say the
following: “I belong in this
academic community.” “I can
improve through my effort.” “I
can succeed at this.” “This
work has value for me.” All of
these beliefs create students that are autonomous and able to foster their
learning. The other component of the key beliefs is that the teacher needs
to believe in them as well. They need to foster acceptance, encourage
growth mindset through language and actions, encourage autonomy, and
make their classroom an authentic learning space. This will begin to
change the system of education: fostering growth, not fixating on old
methods.
DIGITAL LEARNING
PROS AND CONS
Technology is a great tool to use in the classroom. It can create
personalized learning that helps each student have ownership of their
learning and give them choice. There are so many different ways to use
technology to enhance learning. Right now, education has only had a
glimpse of the impact it can have on the system. Most classrooms have
some sort of technology that enhances learning from SMARTboards to

iPads. But, is it being used to its full capacity or is it merely a tool to
enhance the traditional method of teaching? I know, in my classroom, I
am not using it to its full capacity. I have a smart board and 15 laptops in
my classroom. I use the smart board occasionally to show a picture or a
video. I rarely use it for lessons or engaging students in learning. I use
the laptops for programs that create personalized learning, but have not
used them for any other purpose. These problems lie with the setbacks of
technology.
There are many setbacks
that I have experienced first
hand with technology.
Technology becomes
outdated quickly and can
have many glitches. When
there are glitches, there can
be a lack of IT support or it
takes several weeks for a
device to be fixed. It takes
time to trouble shoot any
issues with technology, and when you are in the middle of a lesson, this
can be frustrating. Not all students have equal access to technology at
home and this can create issues when assigning projects do on a device
for homework. The school system is resistant to change and often times
does not have the funds to purchase quality devices or digital programs.
Teachers are forced to use what the school provides and have to get any
programs they use approved through the district.
With all of these setbacks, it is important to realize that technology
is our present and our future. We need to have a growth mindset when

dealing with the setbacks, because the good far outweighs the bad. We
should use whatever technology that is provided to us and use it fully to
enhance our students learning. I want to change my teaching habits. I
want to grow and use digital learning to create students that are
autonomous and connected to their learning. If I want their education to
have value to them, then they must learn how to effectively learn new
ways of using technology. Technology is present in every workplace and
in order to create successful entrepreneurs, teachers must foster a digital
learning environment.
COLLABORATION
TOGETHER IS BETTER
“Deeper Learning happens when schools build from the idea that
everyone is in it together” (Martinez and Mcgrath, 2014). Students do not
thrive unless they feel connected and important. Relationships should be
the center of any classroom. A community of learners who respect each
other’s opinions
and build off each
other’s strengths
can be powerful.
The teacher
is responsible for
building this
collaborative
environment
where students
are not afraid to share their feelings, thoughts, and ideas. They should
feel as if they have a voice that can be shared and listened to.
I believe that students not only have to have a growth mindset, but
also a classroom mindset. They need to see and believe that every
student has strengths and value that can be added to the conversation.
They need to be able to work in groups and create new ideas together. If

they know that they belong in the academic community, then they will be
more likely to desire to learn. In our world, new ideas or inventions rarely
come from a single mind. Most innovations come from a group of minds
that worked tirelessly together to achieve the outcome. Students must
graduate from high school knowing how to collaborate with like minds
and digital instruments to create powerful new ideas. This is the world
that we live in. Learning comes from collaboration and determination.
