Machine learning’s impact on utilities webinarSparkCognition
Navigant Research estimates that utility companies will spend almost $50 billion on asset management and grid monitoring technology by 2023. Today many organizations are facing budgetary challenges in order to increase reliability, uptime and safety within their facilities.
The industry is adapting to new technologies including utilization of advanced sensors and sensor fusion, edge devices, artificial intelligence, and machine learning to create the maintenance center of the future.
Bernie Cook, former Director of Maintenance and Diagnostics at Duke Energy and now VP of Woyshner Service consulting, will join us to provide practical guidance and examples of how utilities can begin adapting these next generation technologies within their facilities to drive significant reduction in maintenance costs.
Following Bernie, Stuart Gillen, Director of Business Development at SparkCognition, will give examples of how machine learning technologies are augmenting current practices that make maintenance engineers more efficient at predicting critical asset failure.
Join this webinar to learn about:
- Real examples of ways utilities are moving to more advanced monitoring and diagnostic capabilities and the technologies involved.
- How machine learning can improve equipment reliability and performance, and reduce operational and maintenance costs.
- How machine learning can augment or even supplement human subject matter experts by providing significant advance notice of asset performance issues.
Although Big Data is changing enterprise data architecture models, support for Big Data extends beyond the walls of IT. The most successful companies are focused on building strong business cases for Big Data to drive support, adoption and funding though the enterprise.
This webinar investigated the two perspectives in constructing a business case for Big Data as well as how to create a compelling business case for Big Data success.
During this webinar, we covered:
-Challenges Creating Business Cases for Big Data
-Two perspectives for building Big Data business-cases

Predictive Analytics for IoT Network Capacity Planning: Spark Summit East tal...Spark Summit
The Internet of Things (IoT) is a growing network, supporting a wide variety of service types with specific network requirements that differ from traditional human type communications. This has led to emergence of dedicated IoT network standards. To optimize investments for dedicated network infrastructures, we’re investigating a dynamic approach in network capacity planning to accommodate multiple IoT traffic types over a cellular network, while maintaining their specific requirements.
We studied models of IoT traffic and used machine learning in prediction and scheduling of future workload under heterogeneous and variable traffic conditions when human-type and machine-type communications are mixed.
An integrated analytics framework including Hadoop and Spark were deployed for experimentation and a number of capacity planning use cases were implemented to verify the accuracy of the method.
Big Data Analytics: Reference Architectures and Case Studies by Serhiy Haziye...SoftServe
BI architecture drivers have to change to satisfy new requirements in format, volume, latency, hosting, analysis, reporting, and visualization. In this presentation delivered at the 2014 SATURN conference, SoftServe`s Serhiy and Olha showcased a number of reference architectures that address these challenges and speed up the design and implementation process, making it more predictable and economical:
- Traditional architecture based on an RDMBS data warehouse but modernized with column-based storage to handle a high load and capacity
- NoSQL-based architectures that address Big Data batch and stream-based processing and use popular NoSQL and complex event-processing solutions
- Hybrid architecture that combines traditional and NoSQL approaches to achieve completeness that would not be possible with either alone
The architectures are accompanied by real-life projects and case studies that the presenters have performed for multiple companies, including Fortune 100 and start-ups.

Digital Education for Clinical EducationJanet Corral
A presentation given to University of Colorado Dept of Anesthesia Grand Rounds on April 29, 2019. Designed to be interactive and follow principles of active learning, where slides ask a question, this was a time for the audience to pause & discuss with each other what they had learned to that point, as a way of co-constructing knowledge, bringing in critical appraisal, and application of concepts to their own teaching & learning practice. Meant to reach a broad audience, only some of whom are educators, the presentation also remains at an introductory level to ensure broad applicability. Email me if you are interested in a higher level of engagement around digital education options for clinical education!
Cyborg Learners and Adopting Tech Well in Health Professions EducationJanet Corral
This invited keynote talk was given at University of Arkansas on May 1 2018 as part of their Teaching Scholars' Day. Dr. Corral challenged faculty to consider themselves as the 'hinge generation' of educational leaders who can speak to both those who advocate a traditional format for higher education, and the incoming (and current) generations who are voting with their feet away from lecture for modifications to how health professions programs offer and structure their learning experiences. The activities in the talk allow learners, faculty, and administrators space to dialog about how health professions programs might, should, and could be modified.
