Learning preferences are all about how your learners study and learn in better ways that reflect their interests and likes. Learners learn in different ways and have a style or a preference to help them acquire new skills , knowledge and remember things.
Some teachers prefer the concept preference to learning styles so as not to classify a learner and impose a particular learning style. What suits one learner might not suit another? For example, if a group of people are learning videos, some like listening and dramatization the teacher acts. Others want to stand up and move performing the movements at the same time as watching the teacher perform them.
Talking about the best learners learn respecting their preferences and needs is like someone in real life situation where he or she may buy a laptop or smart TV , do you get straight in and start using it, do you read the instructions first, or do you call or ask for competent person to show you what to do (or do you use the internet to watch a video on YouTube)?
That is a real life example of someone’s learning style or preference for learning.
Teachers first primary concern is how to make things easier for their learners and audience – The may opt for a particular methodology that they see it suit them or for a specific diversity while delivering their content, but this might not suit their learners.
For example, if teachers prefer to listening to a lecture they certainly feel more comfortable lecturing their learners.
That’s why teachers have to find out what their learners’ preferences are, then they can adapt the delivery content that to suits them.
There are so many different ways of ascertaining preferences, some systems might contradict others or even be misunderstood. Some people are in favour of them, whereas others aren't. The current thinking is that there is no valid research to justify their use. However, you need to make your own decision on whether using the results of learning styles' tests for differentiation will work for your learners. You will also need to check whether the organisation you work for advocates their use or not.
Most people don't fit into one style or preference, I recommend using a variety of teaching and learning approaches to help learning to take place. Your learners might instinctively know what works best for them rather than having it determined for them. For example, they might prefer practical activities rather than reading or writing. This might have been developed from previous courses they have attended. Rather than this being their learning preference, you could think of it as their teaching preference. You could ask your learners which teaching preference they prefer and then adapt your sessions accordingly.

Ji Min Kim and partners Megan and Kelsey conducted an experiment on September 29th, 2010 to determine how the amount of water affects its cooling rate. The student spent their DT period filing and sanding their project. They used a half-round file to smooth edges and a disc sander, being careful not to damage the project. After finishing cutting and filing parts of the project, the student felt the penguin's mouth looked too big so they cut it to look more realistic. When they return from holiday, they will continue filing and sanding before adding more details like realistic ice and wheels.

The student had a double period of design technology class where they worked diligently. They finished cutting and sanding the edges of an "Ice Flow" sculpture shaped like wavy ice. The teacher demonstrated how to use a Gig Saw to cut the wavy shape. After cutting, the student used a disc sander and files to further smooth and shape the ice sculpture. The teacher suggested adding ice pieces to the flow to make it look more realistic.

Learner style
- 1. Knowing about the learning styles Ji Min Kim Have you ever wondered about what is your learning style? I guess many people don’t know their learning styles and what are the learning styles. Learning styles are education methods and there are some learning styles methods that will fit you. Basically, there are 3 main learning styles, which are visual, auditory and kinesthetic learners. First, talking about a visual learner. What do you think of the word “visual” when you hear? If you do think of looking, seeing, whatever that relates to eyes, then it’s correct. Visual learner is a person that really likes to see more than listening or touching. About 40 percent of people are visual learners. Visual learners get benefits from when they looking at diagrams, charts, pictures, films or written directions. Plus, they do well on writing assignment or writing some notes. They have some disadvantages too. Which are listening and responds test. Those things involved hearing. Second are auditory learners. Usually auditory learners are who learn best thorough hearing. Approximately, there are 20 to 30 percent of people that are auditory learners. Auditory learners like listening music, oral reports, read to self out loud and can’t keep quiet for long periods. They make a good attention and interest, when the teacher uses voice tone and body language to teach the class. Their worst test types are reading passages and writing answers about them in a timed test. The last one but not least are kinesthetic learners. Kinesthetic learners are those who learn through experiencing and doing things and I am a kinesthetic learner too. There are about 30 to 40 percent of people that are kinesthetic. Kinesthetic learners are usually like good at sport, can’t sit still for long time, not good at spelling, likes adventure books or movies and takes breaks when studying. I am agree with what kinesthetic learners usually like, because there are many common things that same as me when I am studying. Kinesthetic learners get benefit from, when their teacher takes them field trips or playing some memory game or
- 2. role-playing. The disadvantages of these learning styles are long tests and essays. That’s true though, I usually get lowest scores on essays. Now you may think that why these learning styles are important? Well, learning styles are not necessary to know. However, if you know your learning styles then you can get better grade. Plus it can improve your studying skills and change your studying habit. Some may think that I am different from others. But it’s not wrong to have different learning styles with your friends or family, because all the 3 learning styles have benefit and disadvantages and remember it’s just your education method.
