Leadership 2022
Session 9: Safety, Equity, and
Civility
August 25, 2022
Session #8 Recap
What: Session 8 was on Economic and Community Development
When: August 11, 2022
Where: Carrboro, NC
How: The session included a tour of OWASA, panel on economic development, dollar bill bomb lunch in downtown
Carrboro, panel on affordable housing, rooftop tour, and discussion on the state of transportation.
Theme: There was no word or concept of the day, but you were invited to reflect on all the themes we have
surfaced, including perspective, first follower, teamwork, listening, failure (making it your fuel)
Survey Feedback on Session #8
Fantastic
• Great day and found the OWASA tour extremely
interesting! Aaron did a wonderful job as usual and
all the panelists were very informative.
• Learning about the value of different properties.
• Understanding how the responsibilities of the
Department feeds into the town’s ownership and the
importance of the town’s budget.
• The panel on affordable housing was very
informative and impactful.
Frustrating
• Room was too big; hard to hear
• The topics were interesting but the way they were
presented (back to back panels) was monotonous.
• Sitting in the same room for most of the day was
tough, especially because the room felt too big for
the group
Additional Recap and Feedback
You also, completed your community passport activities, hosted a successful small miracle event, and elected Ali
Evans as Class President!
Congratulations Ali Evans! Thank you for being willing to serve!
Question: Any reflections from last session or updates since we last met?

Icebreaker
Reflect: Reflect on the word “empathy,” how it has been shown to you in the workplace,
and how you have shown it through your leadership to colleagues.
Consider: Consider a time when you (or a colleague) needed empathy but were met with
a different reaction. How did that feel. What did you do?
Pair & Share: Find a partner who you have not yet spoken with much this summer and
share what empathy in workplace leadership means to you and why.

Reflection Activity
1) How do you understand leadership? What does it look like and how does it
feel when you practice those leadership qualities to which you aspire?
2) What do you know to be true about yourself and your interests, talents, and
leadership abilities?
3) Imagine it is the future and you are living your authentic self and in your full
leadership potential for the benefit of our community. What do you see one year
from now?
4) …and five years from now?
5) What commitment(s) will you make today to help you continue to build and
sustain momentum for your leadership journey?
