This document discusses radiation protection and reducing occupational radiation exposure. It provides guidelines for permissible occupational radiation doses, including annual and cumulative limits. It discusses ways to reduce exposure through applying the principles of time, distance, and shielding. Specific techniques mentioned include using protective apparel like lead aprons and thyroid shields during exams, collimating the x-ray beam, and positioning patients to avoid exposing sensitive areas. The document also addresses monitoring occupational exposure through the use of film badges, pocket dosimeters, and thermoluminescent dosimeters.
Dental radiographs may be prescribed for pregnant patients if clinically justified and adherence to guidelines to minimize radiation exposure. Proper techniques like rectangular collimation, rare earth screens, and film speeds of E or higher can reduce radiation dose by 50% without compromising image quality. While thyroid collars are strongly recommended for children and pregnant women during intraoral x-rays, leaded aprons are not required if minimization guidelines are followed as the scattered radiation dose to the fetus is negligible compared to natural background radiation.

The document discusses several key questions about radiation effects: how much radiation is required to increase health risks, what health effects can occur from radiation exposure, and whether any level of radiation can be considered safe. It provides answers to these questions along a continuum, noting that risks depend on factors like radiation type, dose, and location of exposure in the body. While low levels of radiation are generally considered safe and unlikely to cause observable health effects, the linear no-threshold model assumes any dose carries a small risk of effects like cancer.

Radiation protection involves protecting people from harmful effects of ionizing radiation. There are three types of radiation: primary radiation which is most intense; scattered radiation resulting from the Compton effect; and leakage radiation emitted from x-ray equipment. The three cardinal principles of radiation protection are time, distance, and shielding. The system of radiation protection justifies practices where benefits outweigh risks, uses ALARA to keep doses as low as reasonably achievable, and limits doses to individuals. Radiation can cause stochastic or non-stochastic effects depending on dose thresholds. Exposure includes medical exposure to patients, occupational exposure to workers, and public exposure. Radiation is monitored through personnel and workplace monitoring devices. Radiation facilities use controlled and
This document discusses various topics relating to radiation, including:
- Types of radiation such as particle radiation (alpha, beta, neutron) and electromagnetic radiation like X-rays.
- Properties of X-rays including their wavelength range and ability to ionize atoms.
- Sources of radiation including cosmic radiation from space, radon gas, radioactive substances, nuclear activities, and particle accelerators.
- Biological effects of radiation like genetic effects impacting future generations, and somatic effects impacting individuals. Effects can be deterministic where the severity increases with dose above a threshold, or stochastic like cancer induction where risk increases linearly with dose.
Radiation safety is important when using fluoroscopy for interventional pain procedures. The document discusses several principles of radiation safety including keeping fluoroscopy time brief, holding the x-ray tube low below the patient, and keeping staff away from radiation sources. Failure to follow radiation safety guidelines can put medical practitioners and patients at risk for radiation exposure and associated health effects like cancer.
Digital radiography uses sensors instead of film to capture dental x-rays digitally. This allows images to be displayed and stored electronically, reducing radiation exposure compared to conventional film. There are two main types of digital sensors: direct sensors that directly connect to a computer, and indirect sensors that use reusable phosphor plates scanned by a separate device. Digital images can be enhanced, measured, and stored indefinitely, aiding in diagnosis and treatment planning. While equipment and maintenance costs are higher than film, digital imaging provides advantages in areas like endodontics, orthodontics, implantology, and periodontics.

This document discusses digital subtraction angiography (DSA), including its history, equipment, and applications. DSA involves acquiring digital fluoroscopic images before and after injecting contrast material, and using computer subtraction to remove bone structures and leave an image of blood vessels. It originated in the 1970s and allows for real-time angiography with improved vessel contrast compared to conventional techniques. Key components of DSA systems include an x-ray unit, image intensifier, computer, and software for image processing functions like subtraction, enhancement, and roadmapping.
Digital subtraction angiography (DSA) is a fluoroscopy technique that uses iodinated contrast media and subtraction of bone structures to clearly visualize blood vessels. During a DSA procedure, a catheter is inserted into an artery and guided to the vessel of interest before injecting contrast dye and acquiring images. Multiple frames are taken in rapid succession and a mask image is subtracted from subsequent images, leaving an unobscured view of the opacified vessels. DSA allows for both diagnostic evaluation of vessels and interventional procedures such as angioplasty and stent placement.
This document discusses factors that affect image quality in diagnostic and interventional radiology. It covers topics such as image quality parameters like noise, resolution, and contrast. It describes factors like patient thickness, tissue density, and X-ray energy that influence image contrast. It also discusses different types of blurring and lack of sharpness in images from geometric factors, motion, and limitations of the imaging system. The document additionally covers distortions and artifacts that can occur from issues like uneven magnification, grid artifacts, and improper positioning.
This document discusses fluoroscopy and the components of a fluoroscopy system. It describes how fluoroscopy allows real-time visualization of organ motion, contrast agents, stent placement, and catheterization. It then provides details on the evolution of fluoroscopy technology over time, from early fluoroscopes to modern image intensifiers and closed-circuit television systems. Key components like the image intensifier tube, video camera, and television monitor are explained. Methods of image recording like spot film devices and video recording are also summarized.
The x-ray beam is also at an angle to both
the teeth and film. As a result, distortion occurs. In the
radiograph of the mandibular first molar below, the
buccal root appears elongated and narrower than the
palatal root due to the angulation of the x-ray beam.
The document discusses factors that impact radiographic image quality, including film factors, geometric factors, and subject factors. Key aspects of image quality are spatial resolution, contrast resolution, noise, and artifacts. Spatial resolution refers to the ability to distinguish small structures, while contrast resolution is the ability to distinguish similar densities. Noise comes from film graininess and quantum mottle. The film's characteristic curve shows the relationship between exposure and optical density. Proper processing, including time, temperature and chemicals, is important for achieving good radiographic quality.
This document discusses factors that influence radiographic image quality. It describes three main types of contrast that make up image contrast: subject contrast, radiographic contrast, and subjective contrast. It also discusses factors influencing sharpness and techniques for improving sharpness such as minimizing object-film distance, immobilizing the patient, and using a high mA and short exposure time. Exposure factors like mAs, kVp, and focus-film distance are also covered in regards to their effects on density and contrast.
This document discusses the effects of kVp and mAs on various properties of x-ray images. It explains that kVp determines the highest x-ray energy and quality, while mAs determines the quantity of photons and exposure time. Higher kVp and mAs increase spatial resolution, contrast, and signal-to-noise ratio, but also increase radiation dose. The document covers these parameters for screen-film radiography as well as computed tomography, and how they impact visible properties like image noise, contrast, and resolution.
The document discusses the history and components of fluoroscopy systems. Early fluoroscopy required complete darkness as it relied on rod vision, exposing patients and radiologists to high radiation. Modern systems use an image intensifier to amplify images 500-8000x, allowing viewing on a TV screen using cone vision with less radiation exposure. The image intensifier converts x-rays to light through an input phosphor, then light to electrons via a photocathode. Electrostatic lenses accelerate electrons onto an output phosphor, reconverting them to brighter light for display. Cesium iodide replaced earlier phosphors for better x-ray absorption and resolution.
The document discusses various radiographic exposure factors and how they influence the quantity and quality of x-radiation exposure to patients. It describes how factors like kVp, mA, and exposure time determine the radiation dose and beam quality. It also discusses how the design of the x-ray machine like focal spot size, filtration, and high voltage generation impact technical settings. Film factors like sensitometry, contrast, and processing also influence radiographic image quality.
The objectives of radiation protection according to the ICRP and NCRP are to prevent serious radiation effects and reduce stochastic effects to acceptable levels while allowing beneficial practices involving radiation exposure. This is achieved through principles of justification, optimization and dose limitation. Justification requires that practices only be adopted if benefits outweigh radiation risks. Optimization aims to keep exposures as low as reasonably achievable. Dose limitation sets defined exposure limits for workers and the public.
Image quality, digital technology and radiation protectionRad Tech
1. The document discusses key factors that influence image quality for both film-based and digital radiography systems, including density, contrast, resolution, and distortion.
2. It also covers radiation exposure factors like kV, mAs, and techniques to reduce patient dose like using collimation and shields.
3. Digital radiography systems use metrics like exposure index and SNR to assess image quality rather than film density, and also allow for post-processing techniques.
Digital subtraction angiography (DSA) is a technique used to visualize blood vessels by subtracting bone and tissue structures from angiograms, leaving only images of opacified blood vessels. It involves acquiring digital fluoroscopic images before and after injecting iodinated contrast media and subtracting the pre-contrast images from the post-contrast images in real-time. DSA allows for both diagnostic evaluation of vascular anatomy and interventional procedures such as aneurysm coiling or tumor embolization. While generally safe, DSA does carry risks of local vascular complications, systemic reactions to contrast media, or neurological deficits in rare cases.

1. Identify tasks, jobs, or areas of concern that may have high noise exposure levels. Perform a walk-through and observe worker tasks.
2. Select monitoring locations based on the task analysis. Place the dosimeter on workers in those areas.
3. Program the Edge dosimeter settings based on the relevant noise regulations (e.g. OSHA, MSHA). Configure parameters like run type, criteria levels, exchange rates.
4. Train workers on how to wear and operate the dosimeter properly. Ensure a tight, secure fit on their person.
5. Start monitoring runs when workers enter areas of concern

5. BUILT FOR COMFORT & PROTECTION
Every single apron is made to order, starting with
the computerized cutting table that stores our
more than 200 standard apron designs and sizes
or by hand if it’s a custom size. At this stage your
choice of one of our 100+ in-stock or over 2,000
custom fabric colors is rolled onto the cutting
table and inspected, assuring the material is free
of flaws or defects that could mar its appearance.
From the cutting table it moves to our pocket
setting machine and the Infab exclusive “double
welt pocket” is attached to every apron. Step 3
is an optional one, monogramming, where our in
house staff has your custom digitized logo ready
to sew or your personalized name is applied by
our technicians on our computerized, state of the
art, multi head,16 thread embroidery machines.
The next step for many of our aprons is the Velcro
station where our team of fine needle sewing
technicians attaches your choice of the industries
largest variety of hook and loop fastener colors.
From there the apron moves to the all-important
core material installation area. A team of
technicians inspects each sheet of protective
substrate by hand, stamps the batch, roll and
control number to the substrate and then passes
it to the flat sewing station. There the apron is
inspected again and then sewn by hand on our
specialized flat sewing machines. This process
affixes the inner protective core material to the
inside and outside covering materials.
The finishing touches of shoulder pads, edge trim
and panel assembly are all carried out in the final
production phase with three more stations, three
more quality inspections and three more sets of
hands and eyes all caring for your apron along
the way.
Cleaning, trimming, final order review and one more
stringent and thorough quality check is performed
after final production and then your apron is
weighed as a final safety check, gently rolled,
inserted into a protective plastic bag and boxed for
shipping.
From your idea to our production floor and shipped
out to you in ten days or less. Every weekday and
every order, every time.

7. COREMATERIAL
CORE MATERIAL
There are three test procedures for radiation protection material
that are universally recognized. ASTM which is widely used in the
United States, IEC 61331-1 which is widely used throughout the rest
of the world and DIN 6857-1 which is the only standard allowed in
Germany and the toughest of them all to meet or exceed. Infab is the
only manufacturer to have a lead-free core material able to pass all 3
standards, KIARMOR.
Attenuation
In physics, attenuation is the gradual loss in intensity of any kind of flux through a medium.
For instance, X-rays are attenuated by lead and other powdered metals.
Lead Equivalency
The protection provided by lead/lead-free core materials compared to pure lead. The most commonly
requested lead equivalency is .50 mm Pb. When tested at 80 kVp a .50 mm Pb equivalent apron will
provide approximately 97% direct beam attenuation.
Scatter Radiation
Scatter Radiation is a type of secondary radiation that occurs when the useful beam intercepts any
object, causing some x-rays to be scattered.. Most of a technologist’s occupational exposure comes
from scatter radiation; therefore using safety measures against scatter radiation will effectively lower a
technologists occupational exposure.
Infab offers our customers the best core material choices
in the industry. Our Smart Armor core guarantee is unlike
anything else in the industry, backing our Lead, Lead-Free
Composite, Greenlite and KIARMOR Lead-Free with the
only warranty against stiffening, cracking and crumbling.
Protection against scatter radiation is critical and
that’s why we have developed our KIARMOR Lead-Free
core material. KIARMOR Lead-Free is the only core
material able to pass all three major recognized testing
authorities: ASTM, IEC 61331-1 and DIN 6857-1. It is
the only lead-free material to ever pass the DIN 6857-1
standard.
CORE MATERIAL AND PHILOSOPHY TESTING AUTHORITIES
CORE MATERIAL KEY TERMS
There are no shortcuts when it comes to
proper protection so we take no shortcuts
in testing our core materials. We believe in
providing our customers with real results
which is why we proudly display our
KIARMOR testing on page 9 and Smart Armor
testing on page 11.
Providing customers with the knowledge they
need to make a core material choice is our
mission and giving people the results they
need is of the utmost importance at Infab.
Infab Corporation805.987.5255InfabCorp.com 7
8. COREMATERIAL
BI-LAYER PROTECTION
AGAINST SCATTER RADIATION
& ABSORBED DOSE
KIARMOR Lead-Free is an all new innovation in radiation protection
core material, the combination of two powerful radiation blocking
materials into a single homogeneous sheet.
• The lightest and most flexible radiation protection
material available
• Provides 20% greater protection against absorbed dose when
compared to Standard Lead products
• Provides 40% greater protection against absorbed dose when
compared to Lead-free, or low-Lead composites
BI-LAYER TECHNOLOGY
Sb Antimony 51 (Low atomic weight element)
Bi Bismuth 83 (High atomic weight element)
KIARMOR Lead-Free’s unique design and production
methodology creates a Bi-Layer material tested by KI
GLOBAL in partnership with world-leading health, science
and technology partners.
Kiarmor Lead-Free is made from one homogeneous layer
of two distinct, Lead-free materials and is certified by the
National Physical Laboratory (NPL) for use by interventional
radiologists, cardiologists and healthcare professionals
working with radiation in hospitals worldwide.
Our KIARMOR Lead-Free core material is the most
flexible, lightest weight and most importantly the most
protective apron in the industry. Through countless hours
of development we have produced a core material that
protects not only in the direct beam but more importantly
against dangerous scatter radiation.
Scatter radiation is the dangerous stuff, it’s the lower
energy radiation and it doesn’t pass through your body,
it’s absorbed into it.
SCATTER RADIATION
Scatter Radiation is a type of secondary radiation
that occurs when the useful beam intercepts any
object, causing some x-rays to be scattered. During
an x-ray or fluoroscopic exam the patient is the
most significant source of scatter radiation. Most of
a technologist’s occupational exposure comes from
scatter radiation; therefore using safety measures
against scatter radiation will effectively lower a
technologist’s occupational exposure.
PROTECTION AGAINST
ABSORBED DOSE
All X-Ray procedures expose people to a quantity of
radiation. Absorbed dose describes the measure of ionizing
radiation that remains in the body or organs.
A 0.25 mm Pb Apron allows approximately 10%
penetration of source radiation (90% attenuation). At 0.5
mm Pb this becomes 3% (97% attenuation). The difference
is five times - or 500%.
KIARMOR Lead-Free’s ultra-lightweight, Lead-free
composition lets medical personnel work longer, with the
highest level of protection at a reduced apron weight.
LIGHT, FLEXIBLE AND PROTECTIVE
Why then is every single test for “lead equivalency”
and radiation protection performed under the direct
beam and not just the regular direct beam, but the
narrow direct beam that has NOTHING to do with real
world conditions?
The answer is because that test is easy and
inexpensive to perform.

LATEST TECHNOLOGY
MANUFACTURING PROCESS
The unique manufacturing process involves a multi-layer construction that produces a homogenous sheet we call Smart Armor because of its
superior protection capabilities and long lasting quality. This insures an even distribution of the specially graded pure metal particles within the
vinyl matrix and therefore a consistent level of protection throughout the sheeting.
Smart Armor has been a staple for what Infab is all about. We started our Smart Armor core guarantee knowing full well we had the best
core material available in the industry and we have kept that promise. Each core material in our Smart Armor line (Regular Lead, Lightweight
Composite, Greenlite) is the highest quality and is guaranteed not to crack, crumble or stiffen for a minimum of 10 years.

Smart Track makes it simple to manage my suite of lead aprons.
We track over 100 aprons - it saves time and headaches.
The SMART TRACK Apron Inventory
system has revolutionized the way lead
apron quality control testing and inventory
management is performed at our facility.
It is a superior, comprehensive, and user-
friendly product. Individual bar codes make
tracking aprons quick and easy. It is the
best system I have had the opportunity to
work with.
Tracking lead aprons and making sure that they
have been inspected is a challenge for any large
radiology facility. Of the many apron-tracking
systems I reviewed, I knew that the “SMART
TRACK” Apron inventory system would work for
our facility and meet new regulatory standards set
by “The Joint Commission”…The system is user
friendly. All I know is that anyone who has the
burden of tracking aprons needs to get “Smart”
about tracking their apron inventory”.

23. APRONS
THE MOST PROTECTIVE APRON IN THE WORLD
Revolution Aprons have been designed to be the most protective
x-ray protection aprons in the industry. Current style aprons
only offer your desired protection levels at the overlap; however
Revolution aprons protect you at your desired lead equivalency
throughout the entire apron.
Example: A user desires a .5 mm Pb Eq apron, competitors aprons
offer you two .25 panels to achieve .5 mm Pb Eq. at the overlap.
This leaves the shoulders and side area only protected at .25 mm
Pb. Revolution Aprons have a full .5 mm Pb Eq on both panels for
maximum protection.
PARTIAL OVERLAP
Revolution Aprons offer you the desired
protection levels throughout, without relying
on a full overlap. Each panel of a Revolution
Vest Skirt is .5 mm Pb. Compared to
traditional styles of aprons that use 2 panels
of .25 mm to get to .5 mm Pb
The Revolution Vest and Skirt is the most advanced x-ray
protection apron on the market today. We designed it
to blend the highest levels of protection with comfort
and style. Revolution Vest and Skirts are truly the most
comfortable aprons in the world.
The Revolution Skirt now comes with a removable
Revolution Black Belt for better support.
KTC Strap now securely
positioned on shoulder.
THE MOST COMFORTABLE APRON IN THE WORLD
BACK FLAP DESIGN
Revolution Vests feature our all new
“Back Flap” design, providing extra
protection when bending at the waist
as well as balancing out the weight of
the apron front –to-back for increased
comfort.
