Largemouth bass are omnivorous fish that generally eat shad or crawfish but may also eat plants. While not usually aggressive, largemouth bass become very protective of their nests and eggs during spawning season and will attack any intruders. Largemouth bass prefer to ambush their prey from cover like grass, timber pilings, rock pilings, points, brush piles, lily pads, fallen trees, or trash in the water. They are most active at temperatures between 70-95 degrees Fahrenheit and seek out areas that minimize their energy expenditure.
