Language is a tool for communication that is created by communities to represent ideas and objects. It employs combinations of words in meaningful ways through changing word order and uses systems common to a group. While flexible and able to incorporate new concepts over time, language is also inherently limited since no words can perfectly transmit thoughts and feelings. It represents ideas through generalized and arbitrary symbols rather than having direct relationships between words and what they describe.

2. When we try to define language, the first thing that
comes to our minds is words. Language employs a
combination of words to communicate ideas in a
meaningful way by changing the word order in a
sentence; we can change its meaning and even make it
meaningless. Language came into being a community of
people agreed to represent a certain object or idea by a
specific sound or symbol.

3. Language can be defined as a body of words and the systems for
their use common to a people who are of the same community or
nation, the same geographical area, or the same cultural
tradition.
In the words of Walt Whitman Language is not an abstract
construction of the learned, or of dictionary makers, but is
something arising out of the work, needs, ties, joys, affections,
tastes, of long generations of humanity, and has its bases broad
and low, close to the ground."

4. Language is Artificial: Language is created by people
as they needed. Every symbol is attached to a
particular thought or a thing. Human attach meaning
to words as they need to and modify these meanings
according to changing needs. This is why we say that
language is artificial.

5. Language is Restricted: When we try to translate
our thought into language some meaning is lost in
the process. No symbol or word can transmit the
exact reality. This is the reason some times we find
ourselves saying that we cannot find words to
express our feelings because language is restricted.

6. Language is Abstract: Because it represents
generalized ideas of things or thoughts this idea which
the word represents is different every time. For example
‘dress’ can represent anything from a frock to a saree.
When we talk about a number of similar items, such as
paper clips, pins, staples etc., we can group them
through abstraction, labeling their common feature.

7. Language is Arbitrary: There is no direct relationship
between a word and the ides or object it represents
people speaking a particular language accept the fact
that certain symbol or sounds will represent a
particular thing. For example a table would have been
called by another name but these people speaking
English accepted that a piece of furniture with four
legs and a wooden plank used for keeping things will
be called a ‘Table’. Language keeps changing to include
new concepts and words can attach a number of
specific and arbitrary meanings.

8. Language is Creative: Language is indeed very creative
every year innumerable words are added to the
dictionary. These words can be added by different
processes like borrowing, taking words from the other
languages like ‘alcohol’ from Arabic and ‘boss’ from
Dutch.

9. Language is Repetitive: Whatever language we use, it
has the capacity for repetition. It may either improvise
or impede effective communication. For example look at
this simple sentence, A couple of girls are riding their
bicycles. How many signals in it indicate that the
presence of more than one person? The first two are the
plural nouns girls and bicycles. The third is the
agreement of the verbs, are riding. The fourth and fifth
are couple and their. We can accept that in this instance
repetition of information makes the meaning clear.

10. Language is Recursive: Recursive is the characteristic
of language which enables us to generate any number of
sentences using the same basic grammatical templates.
It also allows you to express any idea, thought, feeling
using the same finite vocabulary.
