HANDHELD SYSTEM
INTRODUCTION
A handheld is any portable device that can be carried and held in one’s palm. A handheld can be
any computing or electronic device that is compact and portable enough to be held and used in
one or both hands. A handheld may contain cellular communication, but this category can also
include other computing devices. A handheld is primarily designed to provide a suite of computing,
communication and informational tools in a device about the size of standard palm. Typically,
handheld devices are not as powerful as a computer, but modern handhelds increasingly include
powerful dual-core processors, RAM, SD storage capacity, an operating system, and native and
add-on applications. They are often powered by a dry cell lithium or similar battery. Moreover,
these types of devices increasingly use a touch screen interface. Personal digital assistants (PDA),
tablet PCs and portable media players are all considered handheld devices.
An example of a handheld system is the Nintendo Switch, a popular gaming console developed by
Nintendo. The Nintendo Switch is designed as a hybrid console that can be used both as a traditional
home console connected to a television and as a portable device for on-the-go gaming.
Key features of the Nintendo Switch as a handheld system include:
• Portability: The Nintendo Switch features a built-in 6.2-inch
touchscreen display and detachable controllers, allowing
users to take the system with them and play games
wherever they go.
• Versatility: The console can be used in multiple modes,
including handheld mode (with attached controllers), tabletop
mode (stand the screen on a surface and use detachable
controllers), and TV mode (connect to a TV for a traditional
gaming experience).
• Detachable Controllers: The Joy-Con controllers can be
attached to the sides of the console or used separately,
providing flexibility in gameplay styles and allowing multiplayer
gaming.
• Game Library: The Nintendo Switch has a diverse game library
that includes both popular titles from Nintendo franchises and
third-party games. These games are designed to be enjoyed in
various modes, providing a versatile gaming experience.
• Online Connectivity: The console supports online
multiplayer gaming and offers additional features such as
the Nintendo e Shop for purchasing and downloading
games, as well as online multiplayer capabilities.
• Expandable Storage: The Nintendo Switch has built-in
storage, and users can expand it with microSD cards to
accommodate more games and content.
The Nintendo Switch exemplifies how handheld systems
can offer a combination of portability, flexibility, and a
diverse range of applications or functionalities. It has been
well-received for its innovative design that caters to both at-
home and on-the-go gaming preferences.
THE BENEFITS OF HANDHELD SYTEMS
• Portability: The primary advantage of handheld systems
is their portability. Users can carry these devices easily,
allowing for on-the-go access to information,
entertainment, and communication.
• Convenience: Handheld systems provide convenience
as users can perform various tasks, such as checking
emails, browsing the internet, or playing games, without
the need for a fixed location.
• Multifunctionality: Handheld systems often serve multiple
purposes. For example, smartphones can function as
cameras, navigation devices, and media players in addition
to their primary role as communication devices.
• Connectivity: Handheld systems are designed to be
connected. They enable users to stay connected to the
internet, access social media, and communicate with others
through various means, such as calls, messages, or video
chats.
• Touchscreen Interface: Many handheld devices feature
touchscreen interfaces, providing an intuitive and user-friendly
way to interact with the device and its applications.
• App Ecosystem: Handheld systems often have access to a
wide range of applications (apps) through app stores. This
allows users to customize their devices with applications that
suit their needs, enhancing functionality and entertainment
options.
• Entertainment on the Go: Handheld gaming consoles,
smartphones, and tablets provide entertainment options
wherever the user goes. Users can play games, watch
videos, listen to music, or read e-books while on the
move.
• Real-time Information Access: Handheld systems
enable users to access real-time information, such as
news updates, weather forecasts, and stock market
data, enhancing their ability to stay informed.
• Camera Functionality: Many handheld devices come
equipped with cameras, allowing users to capture photos
and videos on the go. This feature is particularly useful for
documenting experiences and sharing them with others.
• Compact Design: The compact design of handheld
systems makes them easy to carry and handle. This
compactness contributes to their widespread adoption and
popularity.
• Work Productivity: Handheld devices support work-
related activities, enabling users to check emails, access
documents, and collaborate with others, thereby
contributing to increased work productivity.
