Flex Day 2018
Welcome! We are now
“Modern Languages & Civilizations”
Impact:
1. We want our department name to reflect more fully and accurately what we
teach
2. Improve how we are perceived
Rationale
1. Our present name does not completely convey the department’s current
and future curriculum. We teach more than language and humanities
courses. We also pride ourselves on teaching civilization courses, and,
possibly, literature, film, and other cultural courses in the next 2-3 years.
2. Some languages and culture course we offer are not considered “foreign” in
America. We want to be pro-active about inclusivity.
3. “Modern languages” integrates better with other disciplines i.e.
anthropology, linguistics, etc.
4. Humanities Program is now under Social Sciences
We are working on it!
 Department Canvas shell to upload all forms and info
 Changing department signs (the change will be already in the future catalog)
 Changing all level 8 Conversational language courses (2 units) will become
level 7 (3 units) by Fall 2019. 2-unit courses are NOT UC transferrable AND
only all state certificate programs of 16 or more units will be funded.
 We no longer subscribe to Mango Languages because the students did not find
it too helpful. We are going to try Fluent U starting January 2019.

Certificate (16 units or more): $1,760
This is why state certificate is SO important! For every student who
completes an AA in Japanese, Korean, or Spanish, we can get additional
$2,520 because the student would automatically complete 2 levels of
certificates
