Dear Dr. Kornbluth and Mr. Gorenberg,
The US House of Representatives is deeply concerned by ongoing and pervasive acts of antisemitic
harassment and intimidation at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Failing to act decisively to ensure a safe learning environment for all students would be a grave dereliction of your responsibilities as President of MIT and Chair of the MIT Corporation.
This Congress will not stand idly by and allow an environment hostile to Jewish students to persist. The House believes that your institution is in violation of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, and the inability or
unwillingness to rectify this violation through action requires accountability.
Postsecondary education is a unique opportunity for students to learn and have their ideas and beliefs challenged. However, universities receiving hundreds of millions of federal funds annually have denied
students that opportunity and have been hijacked to become venues for the promotion of terrorism, antisemitic harassment and intimidation, unlawful encampments, and in some cases, assaults and riots.
The House of Representatives will not countenance the use of federal funds to indoctrinate students into hateful, antisemitic, anti-American supporters of terrorism. Investigations into campus antisemitism by the Committee on Education and the Workforce and the Committee on Ways and Means have been expanded into a Congress-wide probe across all relevant jurisdictions to address this national crisis. The undersigned Committees will conduct oversight into the use of federal funds at MIT and its learning environment under authorities granted to each Committee.
• The Committee on Education and the Workforce has been investigating your institution since December 7, 2023. The Committee has broad jurisdiction over postsecondary education, including its compliance with Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, campus safety concerns over disruptions to the learning environment, and the awarding of federal student aid under the Higher Education Act.
• The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is investigating the sources of funding and other support flowing to groups espousing pro-Hamas propaganda and engaged in antisemitic harassment and intimidation of students. The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is the principal oversight committee of the US House of Representatives and has broad authority to investigate “any matter” at “any time” under House Rule X.
• The Committee on Ways and Means has been investigating several universities since November 15, 2023, when the Committee held a hearing entitled From Ivory Towers to Dark Corners: Investigating the Nexus Between Antisemitism, Tax-Exempt Universities, and Terror Financing. La République du Burundi means Republic of Burundi in English;
It is located in East Africa;
It is a landlocked country bounded on the north by Rwanda, on the East and South by Tanzania,
and on the West by Lake Tanganyika and the Democratic Republic of the Congo;
Unlike most French speaking countries in Africa, La République du Burundi (Republic of Burundi)
was not colonized by France rather, it was until the end of the First World War colonized by the
Germans and later given over to the Belgians whose official language is French

Ruanda (Rwanda).;
This can be seen in the ethnic composition of both countries (Hutu, Tutsi and Twa);
Although plagued by inter-tribal wars between the Hutu and Tutsi for almost a century, La
République du Burundi (Republic of Burundi) at the insistence of the UN Trusteeship Council,
became an independent constitutional monarchy under Mwami Mwambutsa IV on July 1, 1962,
and was admitted to the UN in September 1962;
Known as one of the smallest independent French speaking country in Africa, La République du
Burundi (Republic of Burundi)) has an area of 27,834 sq km (10,747 sq mi).

Ruzizi, Malagarasi, and Ruvuvu are the three main rivers in La République du Burundi (Republic of
Burundi);

hippopotamuses, crocodiles, wild boars, antelopes, monkeys, and galagos (bush babies);
Birds such as guinea hens, partridges, ducks, geese, quail, and snipe, are in abundance in La

La République du Burundi’s principal mineral resources are gold, uranium, petroleum, tin, peat,
and bastnasite;
5percent of Burundi’s land area is covered by forest while 53percent are used for permanent

(73°F) in the Great Rift Valley and 20°C (68°F) on the plateau;
It is mostly rainy all throughout the year except from May – August which is often dry.

The total population of La République du Burundi as at 2014 is estimated at 10,395,931;
The official languages are French and Kirundi;
67 percent of the citizens of Burundi are Roman Catholics and Protestants, 32 percent adheres to
traditional/indigenous beliefs while a micro 1percent of the population are Muslims;
About 85 percent of the total population comprises of the Hutu ethnic group while 14 percent of
the population belongs to the Tutsi ethnic group. 1 percent of the inhabitants of La République du
Burundi (Republic of Burundi) are of the Twa ethnic group and these set are pygmies.

of Burundi).Swahili is also widely spoken along Lake Tangayinka;
The literacy rate of this small East Africa country is 54percent of the population and the leading
higher institution therein is the University of Burundi which was established in 1960 and located in
the capital, Bujumbura;
89 percent of the total population live in rural settlements while 11 percent lives in urban areas.

The minorities Tutsis are cattle rearers and herdsmen while the majority Hutus are more involved in
peasant farming, which is their major source of livelihood. The Pygmies ethnic, Twa are hunter-
gatherers;

between the Hutu majority and Tutsi minority;
La République du Burundi (Republic of Burundi) has a predominantly Agricultural Economy and its
major export crop is coffee.

It’s major trading partners are United Kingdom, Germany, Belgium and Luxembourg, and
Switzerland. Textiles, motor vehicles, flour, and petroleum products are imported, principally from
Belgium and Luxembourg, France, Germany, and Japan;
The means of exchange is the Burundi franc which is estimated to be 1USD = 1,558.99 Burundian
Franc as at 18th May, 2015;
The incumbent President of La République du Burundi (Republic of Burundi) is Pierre Nkurunziza.

Political administration in the country is structured in a way that the President can serve for a
maximum of two terms of five years;
. Also, the president selects two deputies (vice presidents), a Hutu and a Tutsi, who are chosen from
the elected members of the legislature and who represent two different political parties;
La République du Burundi(Republic of Burundi) is a member of the United Nations (UN), the East
African Community, and the African Union and is a signatory of the Lomé Convention (agreements
of cooperation between the European Union and many developing countries).

when it gained independence;
Someone from Burundi is called a BURUNDIAN;
A typical Burundian meal consists of sweet potatoes and beans, with bananas, cassava, corn,
peas, millet, and fruits;
Instead of meat, the often times eat fish. Meat is hardly eaten by these set of Eastern Africans.
