Ten friends met at the Church of Santa Maria Novella in Florence and decided to flee the city to escape the plague. They withdrew to the countryside where they passed the time by each telling a novel or story over the course of ten days. The group included seven women - Pampinea, Fiammetta, Filomena, Emilia, Elissa, Lauretta, and Neifile - and three men - Filostrato, Panfilo, and Dioneo. Pampinea was chosen to begin the storytelling and to organize the order and themes of the subsequent tales.
