- 2. ga a r imasu X が あります ga a r i masu X が あります means there is/are X (nonliving object). ga The particle が introduces, or presents, the item X. You a r i masu can use あります when you want to say that there is something at a certain location. i k k a i n i u k e t s u k e g a a r i m a s u いっかい に うけつけ が あります。 There is a reception desk on the first floor.
- 3. a r imasu Note that あります is different from other verbs we have seen so far on the following three counts. n i de 1) It calls for the particle に , rather than で , for the place description. 2) The place description usually comes at the beginning of the sentence. ga 3) The thing description is usually followed by the particle が , rather wa than は .
- 4. ga i masu X が います Whenyou want to present a person or some other sentient being such as animals and insects, you need to i masu use the verb います chika i k k a i n i o t o k o n o h i t o g a i m a s u ちかいっかいに おとこのひとが います。 There is a man on the first floor of the basement.

- 14. Breaking Down ALocation You can break down a location word into more precise and no detailed descriptions by using N1 の N2 form. Let s see what is there on the 1st. floor? i k k a i n i uketsukega a r i masu いっかいに うけつけが あります。 There is a reception desk on the first floor. 1F うけつけ ←Mr. Takahashi uketsuke uketsuke n i t a k a h a shi s a n g a i masu うけつけに たかはしさんが います。 There is Mr. Takahashi at the reception desk.

Breaking Down ALocation no Now we use N1 の N2 form to describe where Mr. Takahashi is on the 1st. floor. うけつけ 1F ←Mr. Takahashi uketsuke ← a man There is a reception desk on the first floor. i k k a i n i uketsukega a r i masu plus いっかいに うけつけが あります。 uketsuke n i t a k a h a shi s a n g a i masu うけつけに たかはしさんが います。 There is Mr. Takahashi at the reception desk. no N1 の N2 i k k a i no uketsuke n i t a k a h a shi s a n g a i masu いっかい の うけつけ に たかはしさんが います。 There is Mr. Takahashi at the reception desk on the first floor.
- 16. Breaking Down ALocation In the same way, we can describe who is there on the 1st. floor of the basement.
