8. Beam Size?
Overall depth ratios of 13-18 and width of 0.3-0.6 are generally
found to be economical in the case of simply supported and
continuous beam.
20. Example 1
A rectangular reinforced concrete beam is simply supported
on two masonry walls 250 mm thick and 8.0 m apart (clear
distance). The beam has to carry a distributed permanent
action of 15 kN/m (excluding beam self-weight) and a
variable action of 10 kN/m. The beam is inside buildings
subjected to a 1-hour fire resistance and designed for 50
years design life. Design the beam.

50. Load Arrangement
Variables actions can usually cover all or
any span of a continuous beam.
Therefore a continuous beam should be
analyzed for the loading arrangements
which give the maximum stresses at each
section.
58. LOAD SET 1 is the recommended
arrangement given by EC2: Section 5.1.3.
To consider this load arrangement, more
than 3 load cases have to be assessed.
However, Malaysia National Annex allows
the use of LOAD SET 2 which requires only
3 load cases to be assessed.
