 A government is a group of
people that has the power to rule in a
territory, according to the law.
 This territory may be a country, a
state or province within a country or a
region.
Parents takes care of their children's need at home.
They work hard :-
to provide food, clothing and a place to live……
to support the child financially…..
to provide safety, supervision and control.
to provide medical care.
to provide an education and so on.
Who takes care of the people of a
country?
 The government looks after the needs, welfare and safety of
the people of a country.
• It frames laws or rules to run the country.
Government maintains law and order.
Laws are necessary for society to function smoothly .
Life in a society without laws would be unsafe and unpredictable.
Protects our rights :- Right to fair trial Right to vote
Freedom of speech Promote Rule of Law
Enforce laws fairly Ensure public safety.
Prepare for Common Defence.
Keep a strong military, build alliances with other nations.
Support the Economic System
Provide Public Services.
What types of services do governments provide?
Build roads, and maintain roads, hospitals, and schools. They construct
libraries, parks, and playgrounds and provide police and fire
protection
There are two types of governments in India.
The Central Government
The state Government
•NEW DELHI is the capital of India.
•The citizens of a country elects the
members of the Central Government.
The Central Government in New Delhi takes care
of the welfare and security of the people of India.
The President, Prime Minister and other
ministers form the Central Government.
India is a very big
country. It is very
difficult for the
Central Government to
look after the needs
of such a big
population all by itself.
Therefore the country is divided into smaller
parts or states.
Each state has its own government, which
looks after the welfare of the people of that
particular state.
Besides the states, there are eight smaller areas directly under the
central government, they are known as union territories.

1. Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Port Blair
2. Chandigarh, Chandigarh
3. Dadra & Nagar Haveli and Daman & Diu, Daman
4. Jammu and Kashmir,
Srinagar (Summer) Jammu (Winter)

7. Puducherry, Puducherry
8. National Capital Territory of Delhi
Among the union territories, the Andaman and Nicobar islands
are the biggest and the Lakshadweep is the smallest.
