FM4 - 'Gomorrah'

1. What challenges does this text present to the viewer?
‘Gomorrah’ (Dir. Matteo Garrone - 2008) ‘shatters any romantic
myths we have about gangster films’ (Michael Covino - 2009).
Through the setting the locations isn’t what the spectator would
typically expect from a gangster film. From the technical code of the
establishing shot of the location the spectator are presented with a
deprived housing estate in Naples, Italy. This technical code connotes
the poor living conditions of the ‘tiny’ (Mark Kermode) characters.
This is a binary opposite (Levi Strauss) to what we expect from a
conventional gangster film. This is reinforced by the interior shot of
the gang leaders discussing the death of Marco and Ciro.
