Kudos is a web-based platform though which authors can maximize the impact of their research publications. This demonstration shows how publishers can enrich author's experience of using Kudos and access information on what activities are most successful in increasing usage and citations.

♯1: information overload
Growth curve for number of articles published per annum
Chart based on 3.26% pa growth in article numbers, the lower limit proposed by Mabe and Amin

In the world today, there are
50 million
published research articles
and that number is doubling every twenty years
but readers’ time is not doubling!
4. ♯2: dense technical content

• Research requires expertise to
understand
• Formal communications often dense
• Opportunity for new discoverability

– e.g. impact statements
– e.g. lay summaries
– e.g. video ‘abstracts’
– e.g. visual abstracts

Such useful materials lost in silos
5. ♯3: under-utilized networks
• Personal networks are key to
how people share, find and
select relevant articles
• Traditionally: conferences, word
of mouth, email
• Future: social networks (exist, but
underutilized)

Welcome to this demonstration of KudosKudos is a web-based platform that helps researchers explain, enrich and share their publications for greater research impact.
The idea for Kudos came from several challenges that we have in the scholarly information sector
The first challenge is the volume of content now available onlineIn the world today there are 50 million articlesWith over a million new articles being published every yearIt’s getting harder and harder for publications to get found and read
The second challenge is the technical and often dense format of a traditional research publicationMaking it difficult for potential readers to quickly identify relevanceAnd while some publishers add lay summaries and videos to help explain complex researchThis additional information is generally sat in silos on publisher sites
The third challenge is the under utilization of digital networksBy researchers to share and explain their workWith these tools only currently being used by a minority of scholars
All these factors together explain the long tail we have in academic publishingA very small number of articles are responsible for the majority of usage and citationsAnd yet small improvements in that long tailCould in aggregate be significant in terms of research and publication performance
Kudos has been launched with that long tail in mindLooking to harness the expertise and network of authorsTo build usage and citations for their individual research publicationsAnd using article level metrics to motivate and reward themBy demonstrating the impact of this activity on their downloads, social media coverage and citations
And the results of a survey and proof of concept site run during 2013Indicate that authors are very likely to want to use KudosIn a survey of some 4,000 researchers worldwide84% thought more could be done to raise the visibility, impact and usage of their workAnd over 75% felt they would personally use tools such as those we described kudos providing
A proof of concept site was launched towards the end of 2013With the support of the American Institute of Physics, the Royal Society of Chemistry and Taylor&Francis40,000 authors were invited to use KudosAnd a target of 1,000 registrations was set as a success measureWe actually achieved 1,000 registrations in the first 24 hoursAnd over the following 14 weeks this climbed to over 5,500And an overall uplift in usage achieved of 19% for those authors using the sharing tools compared to a control group
So now I will walk you through some screen shots that explain how Kudos works
There are 4 core steps to using KudosThe first is ‘explain’ through which an author can write a short title, lay summary and impact statement for their article, book or book chapterBasically, any publication with a DOIWe provide guidance on how to do thisAnd then deposit this information in a variety of discovery databases This helps more people find technical information as this data is easier to browse and translates better for local language searchingThe second step is enrich
The second step is enrichThrough this feature, authors can link related resources to their publicationSuch as videos, podcasts, blogs and imagesThis creates inbound links which help improve SEOAnd also, this data can be provided back to the publisher of the author’s workAnd presented as author recommended resourcesCreating a richer experience for readers
The third step is sharingWe provide authors with easy tools to share links to their publicationsBy email and through their social media accountsAnd the reason they would choose to do this within KudosLinks to step 4Because all sharing activity within Kudos is codedSo that the author can then track the result of thisOn their article metrics
Usage of Kudos begins with a simple registration processThere is no fee to joinKudos is free for all authors to use
Registered authors can then claim articlesThis process is automated for authors whose publishers are participating in KudosOtherwise this can be done manuallyVia a search field that queries data in CrossRefWhere an article or publication has multiple authorsMultiple authors can claim that article and use the Kudos tools
Once an article, book or book chapter is claimedAuthors can access the Kudos tools to help them explain, enrich and share itKudos doesn’t hold any article or publication content on our siteWe pull the title and some basic bibliographic data from crossrefAnd display a prominent link to the publisher’s siteAn author can also access their article metrics from this pageThis is only visible to authors of claimed articlesThis data is not otherwise publically available
Here’s an example od the simple pop up box that an author can accessTo write their short title, may summary and impact statement They can edit and change these at any time
Linking resources
Once this data has been added It is displayed on the article profile page within KudosAnd also available via a widget to participating publishersTo display on their own sitesIt is also available by API to third party discovery servicesHelping make it easier for readers to find relevant content
Participating publishers have a number of options within Kudos to add their own brandingSuch as coversTo help improve their authors’ experience of using the toolsAnd strengthen their brand presence within Kudos
Kudos enables authors to share links to their publicationsWithin their own networks by email and social mediaA coded url is automatically added by Kudos to theses announcementsEnabling authors to track what happens as a result of these sharing activities
Authors can access a dashboard showing them all their publications togetherWith information on whether or not they have used the Kudos toolsAnd the subsequent impact of thatOn views, downloads, altmetric scores and so on
Authors can access more detailed graphs of activityAnd detailed activity log of all the actions that they have takenA mous-eover function on the graphsHelps them understand where their sharing activities have had an impact on their metrics
Participating publishers and institutions can access a dashboardThat gives them access to this activityRanging from high level reports of overall activities Through to more granular reportsTo help them identify marketing and advocacy opportunities
This report shows recent sharing activityfor all the publisher’s authorsOr an institutions research community
This report shows publishers which of their authorsAre having most success through their sharing activitiesProviding an opportunity to further support thisAnd understand trends in what types of articles and authors are being successful
This report shows publications whose altmetric score are changing rapidlyHelping publishers and institutions identify articles that are generating a buzzAnd helping direct media teams to provide further support fort hot topic publications
Kudos is already being used by these and other publishersWe are also currently developing an institutional service for universities
Participation offers these benefits for publishers
Participation is easyAn annual license fee provides access to the publisher dashboardAnd also gives publishers the opportunity to enrich their authors’ experience of using KudosSuch as an automatic claiming processEnhanced brandingAnd provision of usage data There is no restriction on the number of DOIs that a publisher can include in KudosAll your article and book content can be made available for authors to use the Kudos tools onand help increase views, downloads and citationsCosts are based on publishing revenues Please contact us for a quotation
