Sustainability
2012: Highest CO2 concentration in the
atmosphere in 350,000 years.
2001 to 2010: warmest decade on
record.
Only immediate, drastic reduction of
CO2 emissions will keep global
warming below 2oC until 2100.
Climate Change

Sustainability
World Population:
 2011: 7 billion people
 2050: 9.3 billion people
Demographic Change

Sustainability
Urbanisation
 2009: for the first time in history, more
than 50% of mankind lives in cities.
 2050: 70% of mankind will live in
Megacities worldwide.

million inhabitants
 2025: 27 megacities with more than 10
million inhabitants; about one person out
of ten lives in a megacity.

Sustainability
Global Trade:
 1990 to 2009: global trade volumes
more than doubles.
Multi-national companies
 1969: approx. 10,000
 2008: more than 82,000
Growth of emerging markets:
 2030: emerging markets account for
two thirds of the world’s economic
output.

Questions that drive sustainability
 How can we make industrial production more flexible, efficient and
competitive?
 How can cities grow and at the same time offer a high quality of life?
 How can we ensure healthcare that is both excellent and affordable?
 How can we create economic growth and reduce the consumption of
energy and resources at the same time?

What Siemens say
Action responsibly for a successful future
 In the area of the environment, we’re providing innovative products and solutions to improve
both our own eco-balance and those of our customers and suppliers. In the area of
business, we’re focussing on long-term value creation. And in the area of society, we’re
fostering our own employees and striving to be good citizens in all the communities in which
we are active.
 Although decisions in these area are not always free of conflicting interest, we aim to make
all of them transparent and to find the best solutions possible. The responsible use of
natural resources, targeted investments in future-oriented technologies that support
profitable growth while offering customers competitive advantages, and a company ethic
that goes beyond mere compliance with the law and places integrity at the centre of
business operations – these are the factors enabling us to drive sustainable development
and to lay the basis for our company’s successful future.

Priorities for Sustainability
Innovation: with our pioneering spirit and strength
as an innovator, we seek to meet the challenges
posed by today’s megatrends, offering our
customers comprehensive, sustainable solutions
such as energy-efficient products for combating
climate change.
Sustainability in the supply chain: we’re aware
that we have a substantial influence on society and
the environment in our procurement markets. This is
why we’re working constantly to improve our
methods, processes and tools and to secure a
sustainable company-wide supplier base. We
expect our suppliers to adhere to generally
recognised sustainability principles and we support
hem with their implementation.
Resource productivity: enhancing our resource
productivity through programmes that encompass
the whole lifecycle of a product is an important part
of our efforts to reduce our impact on the
environment and save costs at the same time.
Internal resource efficiency: resource efficiency is
an important lever for Siemens. We continuously
work on e.g. reducing our energy consumption,
enhancing responsible water management and
improving our waste management.
Integrity: top performance with the highest ethical
values – this is the standard by which our actions and
our business must be measured. Our goal is to
establish unambiguous and binding principles of
conduct that guide all our employers and manager in
their day-to-day activities. Our Compliance
Programme ensures that these principles are upheld
without compromise.
Employee recruiting and retention: our employees
are the foundation for our business success.
Recruiting the best and further promoting and
developing them is part of a company culture that
values every single individual – and his or her skills,
ideas and continuing education.

Priorities for Sustainability
Resource security: in a world of diminishing
resources and growing demand it is of utmost
importance to Siemens to secure the availability of
resources that we need in our production process.
Siemens also engages with relevant stakeholder
groups to address global resource security
challenges.
Localisation of the value chain: close
collaboration with our suppliers on the ground
strengthens our knowledge of local markets, while
our external partners benefit from our technological
knowhow.
Diversity: we aim to enhance the promotion of
diversity within the company and have made
diversity a keystone of our corporate strategy.
Employee satisfaction: Siemens’ special strength
lies in the creative potential and dedication of our
370,000 employees. Crucial factors for their
satisfaction are creative environment, active and
inspiring management, a good work-life balance and
encouragement of personal and professional skills.
Corporate citizenship: with our portfolio, our
worldwide network of experts, we can provide relief in
the event of disasters and can help to advance the
United Nations’ Millennium Development Goals. We
focus our citizenship efforts on areas that are both
relevant and the right fit for us, given our areas of
expertise as a company.
Health and safety: occupational health and safety
management are key components of our corporate
culture. With our company-wide reporting tools, we’re
able to better control and thus optimise our work and
health management measures.
Human rights: we’re working to further promote strict
compliance with human rights by stepping up our
efforts in this area, both in our activities in the supply
chain and in our own operations.
Affordable and personalised healthcare systems:
our vision for coping with demographic change is to
establish effective and efficient healthcare systems
and to make healthcare affordable for everyone in the
long term. This is a pioneering field of business for
Siemens that calls for constant technological
innovation.

This is why we’re working constantly to improve our methods, processes and tools and to secure a sustainable company-wide supplier base. We expect our suppliers to adhere to generally recognised sustainability principles and we support hem with their implementation. Resource productivity: enhancing our resource productivity through programmes that encompass the whole lifecycle of a product is an important part of our efforts to reduce our impact on the environment and save costs at the same time. Internal resource efficiency: resource efficiency is an important lever for Siemens. We continuously work on e.g. reducing our energy consumption, enhancing responsible water management and improving our waste management. Integrity: top performance with the highest ethical values – this is the standard by which our actions and our business must be measured. Our goal is to establish unambiguous and binding principles of conduct that guide all our employers and manager in their day-to-day activities. Our Compliance Programme ensures that these principles are upheld without compromise. Employee recruiting and retention: our employees are the foundation for our business success. Recruiting the best and further promoting and developing them is part of a company culture that values every single individual – and his or her skills, ideas and continuing education.

Siemens also engages with relevant stakeholder groups to address global resource security challenges. Localisation of the value chain: close collaboration with our suppliers on the ground strengthens our knowledge of local markets, while our external partners benefit from our technological knowhow. Diversity: we aim to enhance the promotion of diversity within the company and have made diversity a keystone of our corporate strategy. Employee satisfaction: Siemens’ special strength lies in the creative potential and dedication of our 370,000 employees. Corporate citizenship: with our portfolio, our worldwide network of experts, we can provide relief in the event of disasters and can help to advance the United Nations’ Millennium Development Goals. We focus our citizenship efforts on areas that are both relevant and the right fit for us, given our areas of expertise as a company. Health and safety: occupational health and safety management are key components of our corporate culture. With our company-wide reporting tools, we’re able to better control and thus optimise our work and health management measures. Human rights: we’re working to further promote strict compliance with human rights by stepping up our efforts in this area, both in our activities in the supply chain and in our own operations. Affordable and personalised healthcare systems: our vision for coping with demographic change is to establish effective and efficient healthcare systems and to make healthcare affordable for everyone in the long term.
