2. KOSHTHA
• The word Koshtha is used for the vast empty place where the things can be
kept in a lot.
• 2. In our thoracic and abdominal cavities a lot of vacant place is available
where all the organs are arranged properly.
• 3. As per Sushruta entire abdomen should be considered as Koshtha
• ACC to SHUSHRUTA
• Thoracoabdominal cavity can be considered as the Koshtha where Stomach,
Large intestine, Small Intestine Urine, Blood, Appendix, Lungs etc. organs
are located.
3. Types of Kosta

• ू र को - DUE TO DOMINANCE OF VATA DOSHA
•मृ को -DUE TO DOMINANCE OF PITTA DOSHA
• म यम को - DUE TO DOMINANCE OF KAPHA DOSHA

ACC TO SHUSHRUTA
5. ू र को
न त ू रको तु स तरा ेण मानवः' ।
The person having vata predominant in constitution
•Due to predominance or increase vata produce very hard faeces by
ruksha guna of vata,
•elimination of faeces with very difficulty or even its non elimination.
•This type of koshtha is known as Krura Koshtha (difficult to digest)
Their intestine is dry and hence requires shnehana or the oil treatment
for minimum 7 days
6. मृ को
ब पतो मृ ः यात् सः धेना प व र ते
'• The Persons having pitta Predominance in their constitution
• Due to predominance of pitta or increase of pitta causes watery
or semisolid aeces, moving out more than once or twice a day
•This is Known as Mridu Koshtha (soften stools).
7. म यम को
• मृ को तरा ेण न ा य ोपसेवया'
• The person having Kapha predominant in constitution
• Due to predominance or increase of kapha causes soft, solid faeces moving
out smoothly once a day or regularly
• This Type of Kosta is Known as Madhyam koshtha (semisolid stools).
8. KOSHTA PARIKSHA

• पायसं कृ शरां स पः का मय फलारसम्||६६||

9. person with laxed bowel, is properly oleated by taking unctuous
substance for three consecutive nights & one with costive bowels for
seven consecutive nights with following drugs such as
Sugarcandy, sugarcane juice, mastu, milk cream from the curd, curd,
payasa, gruel made from tila, rice & masha, ghee, juice of kasamarda,
haritaki, amalaki, bibhitaki, draksha & peelu, even hot water or fresh
wine; intake of any of these serves as a purgative of those with mridu
koshtha (laxed bowel) because their grahani (duodenum including
small intestine) is too much dominated by pitta.
10. Purgation is easy for those with laxed bowel, because
their grahani is dominated by pitta and is least affected
by kapha and rata. Purgation is difficult in case of vata
in grahani. In case of laxed bowel, grahani is
predominated by pitta with little quantity of vata and
kapha.
11. CLINICAL IMP OF KOSHTA
Th e examination of Koshta is very nesessory for the following like
Since 5 cleansing procedures are invitable incase of vitiation of
dosha. Snehana and swedana are inevitable pre-operative
procedures before performing the cleansing ones.
•This reveals the predominance of dosha and makes the physician
to judge the line of treatment and can advice what to do and not to
do.
12. •Appropriate line of diet can be decided as diet is supposed to
be one of the lines of treatment.
•For snehana, which unctuous material should be used is
decided.
•Dose and drug of choice of emetics and purgative can be
decided
