The Korean Peninsula is located in East Asia between the Sea of Japan and the Yellow Sea. The Korean War was fought throughout this land from 1950-1953. In a May 9, 2024 paper, Juri Opitz from the University of Zurich, along with Shira Wein and Nathan Schneider form Georgetown University, discussed the importance of linguistic expertise in natural language processing (NLP) in an era dominated by large language models (LLMs).
The authors explained that while machine translation (MT) previously relied heavily on linguists, the landscape has shifted. “Linguistics is no longer front and center in the way we build NLP systems,” they said. With the emergence of LLMs, which can generate fluent text without the need for specialized modules to handle grammar or semantic coherence, the need for linguistic expertise in NLP is being questioned.
2. Korean Peninsula The KoreanPeninsula is located is East Asia. It extends southwards from the continent Asia into the Pacific Ocean and is surrounded by the Sea of Japan on the east and the Yellow Sea to the west. The Korean War was fought throughout this land mass.
3. 38th Parallel In 1948, the dividing line became the boundary between the North and South Korea. On 25 June 1950, North Korean forces crossed the parallel and invaded South Korea, leading up to the Korean War.
4. Battle of Inchon The battle began on September 15, 1950, and ended around September 17. The battle ended a string of victories by the invading North Korean People’s Army(NKPA). The UN recapture of nearby Seoul partially severed NKPA's supply lines in South Korea.
5. Atomic Bomb Testing UN representatives met in Tokyo to plan strategy countering the Chinese intervention; they considered three potential atomic warfare scenarios for the next few weeks and months of warfare. Truman wanted to use the A-Bomb to end the Korean War.
6. General Douglas MacArthur General Douglas McArthur led the United Nations Command in the Korean war from 1950-1951.
7. USS Missouri Fought in the Korean War from 1950-1953. It fought in many battles and helped the US gain power in naval warfare.
8. USAF Attacks Railroads In the resulting Battle of Pusan Perimeter (1950), the US Army withstood KPA attacks meant to capture the city. The United States Air force (USAF) interrupted KPA logistics with 40 daily ground explosions that destroyed 32 bridges, halting most daytime road and rail traffic, which was forced to hide in tunnels and move only at night. To deny material to the KPA, the USAF destroyed logistics depots, petroleum refineries, and harbors, while the US Navy air forces attacked transport hubs.
9. Massacre President Syngman Rhee's régime assassinated its "enemies of the state"—South Koreans suspected of being communists, pro-North Korea, and leftist—by imprisoning them for political re-education in the GukminBodoRyeonmaeng (National Rehabilitation and Guidance League, also known as the BodoLeague) The assassination of around 10,000 to 100,000 "enemies of the state" were dumped in trenches, mines, and the sea, before and after the 25 June 1950 North Korean invasion.
10. Operation Glory Occurred after the war throughout July and November of 1954. Allowed combatant countries to exchange their dead. The remains of 4,167 US Army and US Marine Corps dead were exchanged for 13,528 KPA and PVA dead, and 546 civilians dead in UN prisoner-of-war camps were delivered to the ROK government.
