Korean literature developed under the influence of traditional folk beliefs as well as Taoism, Confucianism, and Buddhism. It is often divided into classical and modern periods, though this is questioned due to reforms in the 19th century and Western influence. Key genres include Hyangga poetry from the classical period as well as sijo poetry and Joseon period poetry from the later period when Hangul was promoted. Translations of Korean literature to other languages have increased its global visibility since the 1980s.
